I hate when people come to work and are sick. And then they stay and share all their nasty germs.
I can hear the lady that sits way across the floor, coughing and hacking and sniffling and blowing her nose. I keep just thinking "Great - next week, that will be me." It is almost like you can see the germs crawling through the air, and there is no way to escape them. BOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
At what point do you call it, and not go to work? Are you able to work from home as to not share your misfortune? Do you ever hold sick time against employees?

It depends on what I have to do. If I've just got appointments, I'll probably stay home. or work from home.
I will get to a closing or a foreclosure sale come hell or high water. court appearances, it depends what it is.

I'm probably a bad person to answer this question right now... I've been sick since last night and had to drag myself into work today because there was a bi-monthly meeting at which my presence was required. Now I'm trying to get enough done that I feel OK taking tomorrow off. Or I was, until my boss just came in and said "Hey, draft a response to this motion, I need it by tomorrow." FML

I am on like day 14 of still hacking up crap from the flu I caught from a co-worker who came to work sick. I hate her.
To be fair, she was probably contagious before she even knew she was sick but still....stay home.

I do. I hate her. I have honestly never been this sick in my entire life. I thought I was dying and didn't care if I did. Yep. Hate her.
Plus? She's annoying when she isn't sick. She has this high nasal voice that makes you want to scrape your fingernails down a chalkboard just to hear something more pleasant.

We had a case of thrush go around the last office that I worked at because someone came to work sick. Ugh.

Sick with a cold I usually stay home, but we also have laptops so if I remembered to bring it home I'll just work some from home between naps. Actually, whether I remembered to bring my laptop home is probably the main decision. I also usually stay home for the first day or two and then come in when I'm feeling better but still have a runny nose or cough, hoping I'm less contagious then too.
I hate that we just get a lump of PTO and have to use that for sick time. Between being sick and other medical stuff I take more PTO for that than acutal vactions....which makes me feel another kind of sick.

I always come to work sick unless its a day that I can work from home and don't need to fax, scan, or talk on the phone much.
I suck and I know it. There isn't anyone to cover my desk if I'm gone, so planning time off is hell enough.

I don't get paid time off for being sick so unless I'm SUPER sick, I come to work and try to stay away from everyone and I wash my hands extra and am wary about touching anything others will touch. I don't interact with a lot of people anyway so I think I'm a pretty low risk.
On the plus side, I'm rarely sick so I'm lucky that way!

I hate it when people come in sick!! Sometimes I do understand why but it still annoys me especially when I have something like a big trip planned and they are over there coughing up a lung. Before my trip to Alaska this past May a co-worker came to work really sick. All I could think was I hope I don't get sick on my trip. I did manage to avoid it thank goodness, since getting sick on vacation royally sucks. I have my own office which tends to help when trying to avoid germs. I also made certain I didn't sit near her during the staff meeting either.

Eh. I'm fairly indifferent. Aren't most people germy and contagious well before they start with the coughing and sneezing bit? I mean, I will tell someone who is gross and snotty and hacking to stop their revolting self at the doorway of my office and not come in, but that's just because I'm mean. I can't even remember the last time I got a cold but I have terrible allergies and people might think I am here with a cold from time to time when I'm really not.
If I got the actual flu or something else contagious and worse than a garden variety cold I would stay home - both because I'm sure I would feel like complete hell but more importantly because a couple of my staff are quite old and have had some health problems and I would never want to expose them to anything like that.

Okay - so I haven't heard a peep from this lady for an hour. Either she went home, or she's dead.

I stay home when I'm sick. But I rarely get sick in the first place. Like, I might take a couple sick days every few years. Actual sick days anyway. We get a good amount and can only bank so many, so I'll occasionally take sick days just to use them. It's pretty rare that I'm taking them to sit at home and feel like death.

Exactly. If the people who are mad I come in sick would like to do my job for me while I'm out, I will gladly take a sick day. Until then, shit has to get done, and I'm the only one who is going to do it.

I remember the one day you had a stomach bug and you told us that according to WebMd you either had a stomach flu which would pass in 24 hours, or you had Colera and would be dead by the end of the week. I use that joke all the time.
"According to WebMD I either have a cavity, or a brain tumor, and I'll be dead by Christmas." Ha!

Or was it just a symptom that went along with the cold? OK, I just went and Googled it. I lied. It's not contagious. Maybe it was something else like strep or something. I don't know. All I know is that everyone except a couple of people (like me, thank god) were sick with throat issues. It was a domino effect.

It's funny cause it's true. There's no symptom you can look up on WebMD without getting at least half the responses saying you have cancer or something and are going to die. It's always that or an STD. If you have any kind of rash or allergic reaction, it's an STD. If you have anything internal it's cancer. There must be a lot of Herpicyphaghonnareaic cancer patients online or something.

...:::"We get EXTREMELY generous sick time at my work. Nobody needs to be there hacking up a lung.":::...
IMO, this is a big contributor to the problem. Some places have really messed up leave policies that pretty much force employees to come in sick.
Me personally; between having separate pools of sick and personal leave, as well as extremely reasonable management and the ability to work from home, I would stay home if I believed I was contagious. I'd probably still work if it was a light malady (cold, cough). I would take the day off if I was seriously ill and/or unable to work.
If, however, I had one of those really punitive leave policies (combined PTO that can't be carried over), then I probably would come in sick to preserve personal time. Make any snarky comment you want --I'd reply that I'm happy to take time off if you will pay me for it and do my job.

DH works at a hospital and has patient contact. You'd think the hospital, of all employers, don't want their employees coming to work sick. However, they give financial incentives for not using sick time, and he got written up because he took a sick day, came to work the next day, realized he didn't feel too good but stayed because they were short handed and minimized patient contact, and then called in the next day.
Asinine policy.

In college I once worked the front desk at a fancy spa and the esthetician was extremely sick and asked me to cancel her appointments for the rest of the day. I started calling people and the manager happened to walk up front and overheard me and asked what I was doing. I told her that X was really sick and was going to do her 9AM and 10AM appointments because it is too late to cancel them but then she was going home. She told me not to cancel anyone else and went and told this poor girl that it is a busy Sat. and to suck it up and get through the day. I am sure that's what everyone wants - a sick person to give them a facial

I even stuck in my symptoms from my toe and it said broken toe or a bad bruise. They all end up saying that it will take six to nine months to feel batter and there is nothing a Dr can do to help. At least an STD they can give you a pill and you are better in a couple of weeks. If it was Ebola then I would be dead and not care anymore.

In my office, if you are tossing your cookies or on your death bed stay home- but if you have a cold, your butt better be here. But we all have our own offices, so we aren't sharing much space. We have a new employee who is of the "stay home when your sick" mentality. Every time she gets the sniffles, which is alot, she is out for a day or two. I want to scream "I'm sorry you're sick but I'm tired of doing your effing job."

I really don't want to pick up the flu or anything else. Stay home if you are running a fever, have vomiting or diarrhea or hacking up fur balls.
