We all have them. What is/are yours?
Mine are
1. People who never have a stray paper on their desk. What are you doing all day? 2. People who don't eat breakfast. Okay, this is super crazy, I know.
Before you tell me how these biases are irrational, let me say that I self defined these as "crazy" and wikipedia defines cognitive bias as "perceptual distortion, inaccurate judgment, illogical interpretation, or what is broadly called irrationality."
So, I get it, these thoughts are irrational and not based in reality.
What are your crazy biases?

Hmmm... you would think I rock with those biases I eat at my desk and my breakfast is usually a coke and some candy. Therefore my desk is covered with coke bottles (I am a tree hugger and love to recycle) and papers that I am working on (The wrappers have to go in the trash). I have some strange biases... I think that people who dress sloppily are not professional or are less competent. This is strange because I myself wear Tshirt and jeans all the time and can't dress to save my life. I also have one about people riding bicycles/walking around town. I tend to think if you are on a bike or walking around town, you are up to no good (I grew up in a town where usually only the people on drugs/homeless rode bikes... everyone else had some sort of vehicle). This one is kinda strange because I myself am trying to stop driving my car and ride my bike more (for health, environmental, financial, and convenience reasons). I guess it is true that saying about hating most in others what you hate in yourself (or something like that).

Oh, this is a bad one and even though I know it's untrue, still sometimes feel it at first when I meet someone: people that talk slowly or have a very strong accent (not foreign accents, more like Regional American such as southern, Jersey, etc.) are less intelligent. Oddly enough, my gut reaction to people with a foreign accent is that they are probably highly intelligent since they know two languages.
I know, awful. Flame on.

What about breakfast? I never eat breakfast. I have a cup of black coffee in the am and that's it. It isn't that i wouldn't want to eat, i am simply not at all hungry in the morning. There are times where if i knew i would have a particularly stressful day or be backed up for a very late lunch, that i might force myself to eat but rarely. I could live fine on one meal a day.

And, i pretty much gave up trying to force feed my kids breakfast. For years i would make them toast, cereal, eggs, whatever and usually would go untouched as we all were trying to get out the door. So, now i offer, if they say no, then fine. And, they are old enough to get something to eat if they really want it. I don't understand people that need to eat 3 meals a day.

If I went into a professional's office (like a doctor or lawyer) and the professional was a young woman dressed in a short skirt, very high heels, plunging neckline, big hair, long fingernails with layers of polish and copious amounts of make up, I would turn around and walk out. I know it's not fair, but I think women who dress that way in a professional setting are not serious professionals, as they want to draw your attention to their cleavage and butt cheeks, not to their credentials. Dress that way in your off hours, but if you want to talk to me about my intestinal tract or estate planning, you better be dressed in a sober, professional manner. I don't have the same bias against young men, although I wouldn't be comfortable with a male doctor that looked very young. And I will have to say if I walked into my gyno's office and he was dressed in a shorty skirt with big hair, I'd walk away from that, too.

That's a little weird for me. In my college orchestra, there was a dude who would wear a skirt. People who have neck and chest tatoos or like 10 face piercings. (I'm excluding nose and ear piercings in that.)

I"m biased against people who use incorrect grammar. I automatically assume they have the IQ of dirt. This isn't true as I am finding out, but it's really really hard for me to get rid of this one. This also goes for people who pronounce words completely incorrectly. I don't mean with a regional accent, but a just plain wrong pronunciation. Like 'con-ver-sate' instead of converse. Then again I work in an office full on engineers who are brilliant with southern accents so milee thinks we're all stupid

We like it straight up!

Dress, tats, piercings or whatever. I guess i am just used to it nowadays.

This is probably my biggest one. It's crazy to me how many misspellings are in some of the emails I receive from other lawyers. I know people are in a hurry, and a lot of emails are probably typed out on a Blackberry, but still - it's not THAT hard to go back and check things. It also bugs me when professionals type out everything in lowercase or use text speak in email.
I am also biased against people who include flashing graphics/sparkly letters/hokey inspirational quotes in their email signatures. (Not on Proboards, just email!) Seems unprofessional.

Women who go to the gym wearing makeup and perfectly coiffed hair. It's hard for me to take them seriously.

And people with British accents sound intelligent no matter what it is they are saying. I found a cartoon a while back that summarizes my sentiments very well. :-)

My pet peeve is people who don't consider that ladies using the gym after work (work = a place where makeup and 'doing one's hair' is generally required) don't necessarily feel like bothering with a time-consuming makeup removal routine just so they can appear sufficiently 'low-maintenance' for the other judgemental gym-goers. ;-)

...::: And people with British accents sound intelligent no matter what it is they are saying. :::... When DH took me to England to meet his family, I was amazed at how incredibly kind everybody, including strangers, was. Now that I'm older I realize they were just being nice because my American accent implies I am retarded.

Anything that now advertises itself as "completely natural" or "100% whatever". I don't want it because now I suspect it. I was watching a McD's commerical when the new chicken nuggets came out advertising "100% white meat". I asked DH WTF was in the chicken nuggets before they became 100% white meat?

I go to the gym for myself looking how i choose to look. I really don't care if other gym rats like it or not.

I understand folks are admitting crazy bias's so I'm not flaming poor SK for admitting it. But...from what I have seen, the women that are all made up are usually very slender and fit as well. They really don't have much to prove in the "serious about it" department.

I used to try and text with full words and punctuation and so forth, but i kind of don't see the point. If i can type "u' instead of "you" or 2 instead of "two", then i do. The point to this technology is to communicate. If we understand each other, then we have communicated. And, is that any really different than old fashioned short hand? It isn't an "official document" to go back and forth with some texting and tweeting. But, an email from a company communication with sparkly things, quotes and so forth would seem a bit strange.

I might get flamed for this but since we are being honest here... when I see someone covered in tattoos and body piercings (I am not talking about one or two but ALL over their body) I often think they must not like themselves very much. I just don't get it

Why would you have to take someone seriously at the gym? Unless I go to the gym first thing in the morning (today I was there at 5 am sans make-up!) I will have my make-up and hair done...not because I am getting done up to go to the gym but because my hair and make-up are always done...I'm not going to undo myself so you take me seriously...that would imply I care what anyone else thinks of me.

Mostly I think of this one chick at my gym who cracks me up. She is there EVERY time I go, but I never see her working out. She'd totally made up with a sexy gym outfit on and spends her time gabbing with other people. Maybe I'm just a judgmental bitch.

That is a good point..someone that cares about their appearance is normally not obese.

Well, the above example discusses working out AFTER work, but if you're asking about before..... Honestly, I've done it... I think a lot depends on what your "sweat threshhold" is. Personally, I have a very high sweat threshhold (I don't start sweating until, like, minute #20 on the treadmill... I'm weird) so if I just stay away from cardio, I'm fine. My hair won't be SUPER beautiful, but whatever. Other people start sweating profusely just from looking in the direction of a gym, so I guess they are out of luck as far as pre-work, no-shower workouts are concerned.

I just don't get it A local orthopedic surgeon i know is covered in tattoos. It is just his thing. I think he likes himself just fine. And, most people who get tattoos find them very meaningful. And for some people it kind of weaves the story of their life so even though i don't have any, i kind of get it. Piercings? That i don't get so much. Just seems like it would be annoying to put a ring in your lip or eyebrow or whatever. But, to each his own i guess.
