I borrowed the babysitters golden lab for blessing of the pets at school today. He's about 2, 90 pounds, and animal aggressive. And I was wearing pumps. I had my hands full.
Maybe I should rethink this lab thing.........

How about a miniature collie? Cute and smart - not too big. I am a Corgi fan myself. They are quiet and pretty laid back.

I would. We own a lab/shorthair mix. While I love the dog she is a freaking handful, especially now that we have a kid.
The amount of energy this dog has is insane. It's a lot of work to keep up with her.
Labs also require a lot of training. Things get out of control fast if you don't. My dog has broken two windows in our house and eaten at least three couches before I was able to convince DH to bring in a professional.
Then I swear our damn dog has Pica. She eats EVERYTHING. I am still trying to figure out how she pooped out a corn cob she swallowed whole several months ago. I was assuming we'd have to resort to surgery to get it out.

No kidding. His dog has hit me so hard with her tail that I've seen stars. I don't like labs. I love Midnight but if we ever own another dog I am so not getting another lab. I told DH that is what you get for buying a dog that was on clearance. We also own an Aussie. Also a very big handful. She's great with Gwen and a really intelligent dog, but it's just not a breed that really fits with our lifestyle. She showed up under my car one day and we took her in, so it wasn't exactly a well researched decision. I would own another basset in a heartbeat. Awesome dogs and all they do is drool/sleep all day.

I've had labs, and I love them. I just forgot how strong they are. Yes, they are. I walked my neighbors lab for her when she had to work late or should I say the lab walked me. I thought I was going to run with him but soon figured out that was not going to work unless I was okay having half my skin left on the pavement.

Newfie's are like bassets. Except it's 200 pounds of drooling sleep and hair.

I wish I was making the corn cob up. You would have had to see it to believe it, I am shocked she managed to swallow it. Passing it had to have hurt like an SOB. I told her I hope it did so you won't be stupid enough to do it again. Then she ate a bannana peel whole. Except it's 200 pounds of drooling sleep and hair. I have one of those. It's called my husband.

Thank you almost 40! She is the perfect size, since she can't jump higher than the kids.

She's a cutie beer! drama - How is the training going with the dogs? Do you have them separated in the house?

It's going all right. It's not going to be fast progress, but we and the trainer are definetly noticing improvements. She said we've spent a VERY long time avoiding dealing with the issue, so it isn't going to be fixed over night.
Yes they are still separated. We are all in 100% agreement that for now barriers stay in place. If we didn't have a kid I would be willing to try putting them together in the house (with leashes on!), but with Gwen in the house that's not a risk I want to take.
We're going to work on putting them together outside first where we'll have more control and there is less danger of anyone, including dogs, getting hurt.
DH isn't sure he will ever be comfortable with all four of us sitting in the living room together. However we do still need to get to the point where if the barriers are breached all hell doesn't break loose.
Trainer said it doesn't hurt anything for us to have barriers in the house, many people employ them for various reasons. As long as we make sure to rotate and give plenty of attention if it makes us more comfortable to keep them we can.

I think my cat wants a dog. His foster mom had a Shetland Shep dog and she sent me lots of pictures of the two lying around together. He also likes watching people walk their dogs around the neighborhood. Or perhaps this is just me wanting a dog and trying to blame it on my cat

Drama- How old is your lab? We have a lab bc/mix who sounds alot like yours. High energy, tail that keeps everything off the coffee table and bruises small children with a single swipe, and ate everything in sight. We used to joke we needed to have a zipper installed to remove everything he ate. One major emergency surgury to remove 6 items we had no idea he'd eaten. Not all at once, but they built up and caused a blockage. He did eventually out grow it, though the kleenex box is still kept way up high. We just adopted an aussie and the two dogs play constantly. They exhaust each other and thank goodness are both good with kids. But the amount of energy those two have....

At least it sounds like things are somewhat better between the two of them, DH, Gwen, and you. Does the 1 still wear the Thundershirt periodically? Good luck with the training.

She's six. . .I think. I'd have to ask DH since he is the one that bought her. I've always wondered if it has to do partly with her breeding because my neighbor's have pure breed labs and they are some of the most calm/dignified dogs I've ever met. Then my previous neighbor had a pure breed shorthair that was really well behaved. She's not a BAD dog, she's just a major handful. DH bought her at the pet store so we have no clue what her background is and never met her parents. Does the 1 still wear the Thundershirt periodically? Not at the moment. We haven't really had anything that calls for her to wear it. It works REALLY well when we do put it on though. If we get to the stage where we re-introduce them she'll be wearing it and we'll either buy another one for Sabah or stick her in one of my t-shirts (basically it's the pressure/tightness we need). Taz it is getting better. My MIL commented when she came over that Midnight was being very well behaved. You know there is a difference if my MIL comments on it because she never fails to critize how badly behaved our dogs usually are.

She's not a BAD dog, she's just a major handful. That's why there are so many labs that do agility/ hunting/ tracking type things. THey can be awesome dogs, but they need a job. There was a lab in my agility class who was 9 and bounded around the course like she was a year old puppy. She was so fun to watch, but I can not imagine living with her.

I think I missed the story- what happened between the two?

I wish you luck with that. THat is horrible, and not going to be something you can likely train out of- though you'll probably be able to manage it. Once you reintroduce the dogs, please don't ever leave them unsupervised together.

Oh we know. Honestly I am not sure if we'll ever have them together in the house unless we get a MUCH bigger house, but I'd like to at least be able to have them in the yard together.
It's something we'll have to manage for the rest of their lives, we are aware of that. I gave the cliffnotes version of things, but I had a really long talk with the trainer over the phone when I was begging her to come back and work with us again.
If she had said it was impossible to manage the dogs would be gone, or at least one of them. I told DH either this gets solved, the dogs go or I go (with the kid). Take your pick.
I went back and deleted my post because it's not something I am super comfortable sharing. It is what it is and we're taking steps to fix it. We get enough grief from his mother about it.
Which is why I said the dogs must definetly be making progress if she gave them a compliment instead of giving us grief.
