Go to an animal rescue event. That's where DD & DS found a dog they fell in love with. I did want another dog, & I figured since he behaved well around the kids, we'd probably take him. DH came around after a week or two. He never admits it, but DH DOES like the dog. (I catch him petting our "Bad Boy Puppy".) ;D

I'd go for a happy medium and get a bunny instead.
An added benefit is that if there's ever World War III, you can eat the bunny.

I have a Lab, and I love her to bits. But she sheds like a mofo. Personally I'd still get a lab, but if the hair is a big deal a labradoodle could be a decent compromise. I'd feel dumb saying "labradoodle" though. it does sound cartoonish.... poodrador? LMFAO! I'm thinking any name that starts with poo is a bit suspect. Though pooeater or poobreath would be apropos for my dog.

Why is DH opposed to a dog? Can that opposition be overcome without wearing down? Just curious . . . He doesn't like the dog hair and feels bad leaving a dog home alone all day. He had dogs as a kid, as did I, and we had a dog together before we had kids. He got her for me. He also got me a cat, which is another story, and I don't really like cats. Our solution to leaving a dog home alone all day ... we got our dog a dog. Well, our dog was weird any way. She didn't know how to be a dog. Didn't bark. Didn't play with toys or play fetch. So we got a dog to teach our dog how to be a dog. It didn't work very well, by the way. Our dog didn't learn how to fetch, bark, or play with toys. All she did was take the toys away from her dog and lay with the toys under her chin. One of the things we learned is that the golden retriever/great pyrenees mix didn't really shed. Even though she had a long double coat. If you brushed her regularly, you could get enough hair to knit a sweater pretty quickly. But, with a bath and brush out every month, she seemed to retain her coat. Our dog's dog, a chow mix, did shed quite a bit, though. Especially when it was warming up in the spring. With her, we'd lay her down and pull clumps of loose hair from her coat (she didn't like to be brushed) to keep from having furry bare feet.

There is a possibility DH's department is going to get a K9, and he would be the K9 officer. IF we get another dog, this would be the best case scenario.
First of all, it would be 18 to 24 months before the funds would be raised, so the baby will be a little older. Second, it will be an incredibly well-trained dog. (I truly think our last dog had a mental problem. He was crazy.) Third, it will go to work with DH, so I won't be stuck at home taking care of two kids and a dog. Fourth, if we go away, other officers are always willing to watch the department K9. Fifth, as long as the dog is working, all food and vet bills are paid for by the department.

But- I was at my agility class the other night and someone was talking about a Yorkie Pug mix. I yelled out " Porkie". Took us 10 minutes to stop laughing.

Get a standard poodle. They're incredibly smart, second only to the border collie, great with kids, and don't shed. They only look stupid when you give them a stupid haircut.

Poodles rule. I used to really dislike what I considered to be small, yappy dogs. Boy, was I wrong. Our rescue poodle can out-think and knows more tricks than any Lab that ever walked the earth, although Labs are nice. But their hair has a little barb in the end of each strand of fur, and sticks to everything. They also develop kind of an oily whang smell to them if they're not frequently bathed. We just found the proper owners of a nice old yellow lab that had hopped into my daughter's car when she was trying to check him for tags, and he was kind of a stinky boy even though he had been taken care of.
Poodles rule. Also, guess who was intimidated by the loaf-of-bread-sized poodle ? The 120 pound Lab-OX...

Okay, the Labradoodles are awfully cute, too. Either way, no shedding.

Just don't buy a teacup poodle. Boys and men don't like walking teacup poodles. Jesus H. Christ, I want a dog, not a small yappy cat. I was thinking along the lines of a lab. As a devoted cat owner, I am offended by you comparing felines in any way to those nasty little yippy pocket dogs. A cat would never behave in such an undignified manner. A cat would steal the food off your plate but would never yap.

Boxers have nice short hair! And one dog is a lot of work... two dogs keep each other company... AND the dog will not be "alone" all day.. win/win! So the answer is, you get two dogs... ;D Boxers might have short hair, but they shed like the dickens! OMG! I have 2, and my white one is always shedding. I don't know if he has a thicker coat than the other, but damn, I take him outside to brush him and it looks like it snowed in the middle of summer. We have 4 dogs right now (two boxers, two beagles) and some day it might be nice to not have a dog. That is 10+ years down the road though. It is a pain when we have to go on vacation, find someone to watch them, etc. and we don't even have kids. So I can understand why your DH might not want a dog right now. I don't recommend any of those "designer breeds" because it just promotes irresponsible breeding. Labradoodles and goldendoodles are not real breeds. If you rescue a mix like that from the shelter, awesome. If you pay $$$ for a mix from a "breeder," you're an idiot. And I mean that in the nicest of ways. For a hypoallergenic dog that doesn't shed, I recommend a bichon frise. Small but sturdy, very fun and not yippy. My aunt has one and a friend has two.

Hey now! My little mutt is not yappy at all! I am as shocked as everyone else, actually. I think you both need to be on the same page, swamp. It's not fair to the dog to live with someone who doesn't want it, and you can't be sure DH will come around (even though he probably would, eventually). Good luck!

I have thought that I would love another dog...but my dog is more expensive than any of my kids. I have spent over $500 in the last 3 weekson vet bills....with no end in sight.
Oh and he sheds enough hair to make a puppy. Drives me insane.

You tell him that he does not control you and that you will buy a dog if you want! Then go and purchase the dog. Tell him if he doesn't like it he is free to leave. You crack me up. Have you ever thought about leading those Marriage Encounter boot camps? I think it's your calling.

That was my Mom. My youngest sister adopted a dog and then ended up moving to FL about 6 months later. She was going to come back for the dog once she got settled but the dog ended up staying with my parents. Mom would always say "not my dog" to her, but she fell in love her. Mom has never had another pet since her, because having to make the decision to put her down was too hard on her.

Swamp - I have currently have 2 dogs. I love them dearly, but between the shedding and difficulty finding doggie sitters, it can be a bit of a pain in the ass sometimes. One is a lab/pit mix and one is a blue heeler. My heeler is insane. She's about 1 1/2 now and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that once she makes it past 2 (if I let her) she'll settle down...she's super smart, has non-stop energy, always getting into something and she's very opinionated. My lab/pit was a rescue. Got him when he was about 2. Took him about 6 months to really calm down, but he's turned into a fantastic dog (he's a big shedder too). Best dog I ever had was a lab/rotti mix I got from the pound. People literally fought to watch her when we went away. One friend said she was the best house guest they ever had. I had to put her to sleep about 4 years ago and I still miss her every day

Oh, by the way, we got the heeler to keep the pit company. I swear he rolls his eyes every time we leave the house. He was quite content snoozing by himself when we were at work, now he's got to deal with the devil all day long

Aren't Wheaton Terriers low on shedding as a breed anyway? I think I got to meet one a few weeks ago and they seem to be pretty nice dogs.

SIL had a wheaton terrier mix that was horrible! I never noticed a lot of hair though. I've told dh that for any 1 animal that comes home, 2 have to go, and that I NEVER want another dog or cat, or any pet really. I'm still irritated about the fish tank honestly. Do your parents want a dog? Then ds could still snuggle one frequently but your dh wouldn't have to deal with full time dog hair.

I have 3 Jackshunds (jack russel/dachshund) who are only around two and we have already discussed if they die if we would get more dogs. Husband says no, but I said that was not an option. I need at least two dogs. I' m genrally a good compromiser but not on the animal issue.
