Hi all - Having survived Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene, with only some flickering lights, and a huge tree leaning on our power lines for three days, life is starting to get back to normal. I hope everyone made it through unscathed. The last few weeks have been interesting. We got a new garage door, and were able to return the new garage door opener that we had purchased. With the new (i.e. - not broken) door, the old garage door opener works just fine! So, instead of a new $200 opener, we returned it for a $35 wireless opener to put on the outer wall. We took the funds from the roof account since the door was darn near useless, which upset our progress towards the roof... however... all is well. The roof was redone.... on Friday. As in.... 2 days before Irene showed up. Initially, the roofing company was going to do the roof over two days, but ended up rescheduling some other jobs in order to get our entire job done before the storm! So, bright and early Friday morning, about 15 guys started tromping around on our roof... and by the time I got home at 4:45pm, we had a new roof! And that included all new decking, too!! Sunday evening, I ventured up into the attic to take a peek to see whether the ridge vent was leaking (it wasn't!), but did notice that the chimney was *soaked*! The roofing company sent some people out to check it out yesterday afternoon, and it turns out that the mortar in between the exposed chimney bricks, and between the bricks and the flue, is almost non-existent! So.... we'll be hiring a mason (hello, Mr. Brother-in-Law!!) to repoint the chimney. Yay. But, at least the new roof held up! Anyway... because of the various expenses, I've had to do some money juggling. Everything will settle out by mid-October, when the credit card bill finally comes, (at least I'll get my 1% back on the cost of the roof this way!!), but I am very glad that the paychecks from my half-time position have started coming... that money will be essential for covering the gap between the amount we had estimated for the roof, and the final roof ($1745 over my estimate) and garage door/opener/keyless entry costs. This Thursday, I'll finally hit 100% on my school tax fund, which is great, since the bill should come within the next week. I am confident that I over-budgeted for that though, so the remaining difference will be split between the property tax fund and the roof costs. Once the roof bills are paid (mid-October), DH and I are going to spend the rest of the year pushing to save around $6000 to put directly down on our mortgage in a lump-sum at the end of the year. That alone will get us under 100k for 1/1/12, save us almost $12k in interest, and we'll reach pay-off 2.5 years earlier than if we don't! I ran the numbers to check whether putting a lump sum down on the mortgage made more sense versus paying off DH's deferred comp loan. The mortgage wins hands down! Paying off the deferred comp loan will be the first big priority of 2012. Anyway... here's where we stand at the moment: 2011 Accounts | Due | Goal | 6/9/2011 | 8/30/2011 | Need | Saved | | New Roof | 9/1/2011 | $5,500.00 | $1,834.19 | $5,014.24 | $485.76 | 91.17% | | Taxes - School | 9/1/2011 | $3,700.00 | $1,210.10 | $3,645.98 | $54.02 | 98.54% | | New Car | 12/31/2011 | $5,000.00 | $2,837.31 | $2,988.88 | $2,011.12 | 59.78% | | Taxes - Property | 12/31/2011 | $3,000.00 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $3,000.00 | 0.00% | | Total | | $17,200.00 | $5,881.60 | $11,649.10 | $5,550.90 | 67.73% | |

Oh my gosh, I'm so far behind and didn't realize how long it had been since I'd checked in here. Anyway, here's my update for August. Work is just incredibly intense right now, and will be for the next couple months. And I was on vacation last week. I've kind of skimmed the last couple pages, and realize there's some posts I need/want to respond to, but for tonight, this is as much as I can manage. Everything went as expected this month as far as savings, with two exceptions. First, I spent about $500 more on vacation than I'd planned for -- thus the decrease in my cash stash. But it was totally worth it, and $100 of that was to put a down payment on next year since I had such a wonderful time with my family this year. Also, DBF should be paying me back $200-300, so I may be able to get my cash back up to where it was. Second is the extra money to my investments. With the big dip in the stock market this past month, there were a few stocks so majorly on sale I couldn't resist buying in. From the bit of skimming I've done this evening, I am impressed and amazed with everyone's progress, as usual! Thank you all for being here and sharing this journey!

Update:
CaptainDuck 7/31/11 9912.14(1/29/11 $2729.01 WIRS6)
Not a very big increase this month, but up is up. Had all 3 of our household cars break down this month. 2 of the 3 are back up and running for about $900 each. The third now needs a new motor and my DS will have to decide if its still worth it or not. The good news is we had the money to pay in cash for the repairs.

CaptainDuck: Wow, 3 cars breaking down in one month and you still made progress! You are amazing! I hope you and your DH will have wisdom and insight regarding what to do with car #3. Car repair decisions can be so very difficult.

I moved the $951 home repair (new A/C) money back to the car fund. I think the A/C may last us the rest of the summer. I'd love to get a couple more years out of it. The last repair seems to be working. I am very thankful for the blessing! It has just come to light that my daughter needs some eye care. One eye does not see anywhere near as well as the other. I'm concerned she may have amblyopia. Our insurance has a high deductible, so this will be all out-of-pocket, and I am concerned about the costs. Two other pieces of good news, however: 1. The dentist did not charge us for my DS' emergency Sunday visit. 2. I moved my washer and dryer and hurt my back, but it is okay. Hope everyone has a great Friday!

murphath 9/2/2011 $358 (2/10/11 $22 WIRS7)Slow go this month--no rebate checks--but still went up a tad: $14! I've decided not to use this $ for Christmas as I have already finished Christmas shopping. I'll play this out and use the funds toward DS's college graduation in May. We plan to make a vacation out of it, stay in So Cal for a bit, go to Disneyland, the beach etc.. I also have a Disney Visa card with $160 Disney dollars. Yippee! My new goal will be $1500, which probably won't happen as this is all "free" money I'm saving: what I find on my walks/hikes, rebate checks, recycling, and the Disney dollars. I'm going to start using the Disney card now as I have free flight $ on my Amex and my DH's Amex which we will use to fly DS home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I charge most purchases and then pay off the card each month. I'm hoping to earn enough for two or three more park hopper passes as all five of us will be together--that's hard to do these days. Happy saving to you all!

Thanks! My three adult kids (well, one is a senior in college) are very easily pleased so when I see something on sale that suits their personality, I'm all over it! I've even got their gag gifts: two big bags of Skittles for DS, 2 bags Hershey's kisses for DD1 who is a chocoholic, and 3 boxes of Red Vines for DD2. With coupons the Skittles were $1, the kisses and red vines were free.

I'm just doing a quick drive-by skim read but had to say great job ladies! This is also my toughest time to make positive progress on savings but to keep adding to our totals, even if it's only little bits, is a reason to celebrate! I'll be back sometime this weekend to compile your updates and add my own. In the meantime, have a wonderful extended weekend, my friends!

UpdateSo this update is a little but of a cheat because there will no doubt be some additional spending coming out of the Vacation '12 fund as the expenditures from our "extra" vacation come through. We had to find some sunshine before DH lost it entirely so we fit an extra vacation into the fund made for only one annual vacation with just a little overage into next year. I know that I'll be back on track in that category by the end of the year though. We got another rose in our fair fund. This one is near and dear to my heart because it was a request from my (then) seven year old daughter. I was reading off the amounts in our different funds as I am wont to do and (after two straight years of not being able to go to the fair because of no $$$) my daughter piped up with, "Can't we start a fair fund?" So, of course, I did! So for the last 8 months we've put $20 a month in there, and I'm so glad that we did! Everything else is on track though we are still living in the land of no buffer. Hopefully, we'll be able to stick to our goals through the end of the year. daphne Don't feel like you can't do both!! If you look closely enough at the boards you will realize there is not one but THREE WIRR West rebel captains over here on the savers board! Trust me we all still have plenty of debt! incl our mortgages which if I remember correctly you don't have hence the need to help pay for daughters school.

First update Sunflower64 9/10/11 $197.69 (8/26/11 $0)
I added a ticker for my goal. Hopefully will reach it by 1st week in November. So far I have some items listed on Craigslist, ebay and a friend is having a garage sale and brought some items over therre. I brought my coin jar to bank today $117 + birthday check + some money in ING acct that I opened earlier this year ... so where $$ came from. Another update next Saturday.

Question for WIR Savers. If you are trying to save EF and half way thru the year an emergency arises that causes you deplete your savings do you start from zero again? or how does it work when trying to keep track your savings for the year?

I think dragon2008's table is a good example of what you are looking for, you can have "Current", "YTD" (year to date saved) and "Spent" column. So if your goal was to save 1000 for EF and you've saved 450 but then spent all of it, then your columns would read: Current: $0 YTD: $450 Spent: $450

Sorry I've been off the board for so long, sealy, but yes, that is how you do it - take your current savings amount and add the spent amount to it.
You saved what you spent, so you should get recognition for the work you put in (since I've been spending from my savings lately, I do take a hard position on this!).
Still waiting for some of my savings to clear, so I'll update next week.

Daphne - without savings or an EF to draw on, it is more likely that you will add to your debt. If you can, try to put some into savings as well as debt payoff - although it is hard to do!

I have to fix my totals at the end of this month. The house I am waiting for went up in price and also they no longer do FHA loans so I will need to go with a conventional loan and put 5% down instead of 3.5% s

Awesome update saverbee! sealy: I can't believe the price went up on the house, and they're not accepting FHA loans. What a bummer!
Update: Finances are stressful right now. We're just trying to keep the boat afloat. I got a tax refund, and it all went to bills. Oh well...
