The Golden Rule has nothing to do with Jesus. It was first referenced in the Code of Hammurabi, about 1800 BC. It's called the Law of Reciprocity and has nothing to do with religion.

Our poster, Sparkle, who just passed away...well, I just read on another board that a transfusion could have saved her, but she refused. She was a Jehova's Witness. Her superstitions killed her. I find that impossibly sad. Yeah, "God" works in mysterious ways. She made the choice in her beliefs. Her belief may not be the same or similar in some points to mine, but respect her position.

hmm, ten pages have gone by since the OP. So I'm a little late.
If I say I'm praying for someone I guess it's just a way of saying I'm here for support. If sending out some well wishes will help, I'll do it. I don't really think of prayer in the way some do. For me it depends on the person I am talking to. If I know they are religious than I guess the prayer can take on that nature. (although I am religious, I don't get into the long begging type prayer.) If the person isn't religious, I can respect that. I don't really know how to pray for someone who isn't religious. I wish I did. Usually I just say I'll send some well wishes your way. (but I don't usually know what to say . . . it usually comes out as please make so and so feel better. . . which is much the same way I do it if I do pray as well)
I guess I really don't understand it much, do I?

I don't believe that prayer works in the sense that some do. Like I don't believe that it's truly being answered or even heard. I will say a prayer if someone asks.
That sounds empty and mocking, doesn't it? Let me explain.
If a person is truly sick and they feel that prayer will help them, they do seem to get better. Maybe it is that little boost to their mind. (I do believe that how you react or your mind thinks has a lot to do with your healing) So if it will help someone for me to pray for them, I do.
I have said so many prayers for myself and have had them unanswered in my life time . . . this is why I don't believe it works in the way some religious people think it does.
It works in the sense that it helps the mind refocus on the positive. Am I making sense?

Perfect sense.
I'm a product of the culture I was raised in. Prayer is prevalent within that culture, which means I often catch myself "praying." I put that in quotes because even if the thoughts I form might resemble something some people consider a prayer (it is never TO anyone), I don't believe it goes anywhere passed my own brain.

Loop - Everybody prays for George and his Angel Clarence saves him and there is a happy ending and Clarence gets his wings. It's really a sweet movie and you may want to watch it again as there is reference to greedy rich people/bank against the little private bank who does people right. George is the little private bank who isn't greedy. You'll get a twofer! Thank you, Femme!

Oh, right! See, I totally ignored the angel part and just paid attention to the evil big bank narrative!

I love that movie. I still watch it every year. For some reason I saw you as more of a Grinch fan.

I'm sure "It's a Wonderful Life" will be on this Christmas season, Sugi. Make it a point to look for it and watch. It really is enjoyable.

It's a classic that seems to get re-aired every year - and more than once - on many channels. It won't be hard to find it listed once the holiday season starts up again. It's old, but never gets old.

I've never watched that show myself.
You're right, it's always on around Christmas time.

I like the Grinch shows. Both the Dr. Suess cartoon version I grew up with (and the book), AND the new movie starring Jim Carrey(?) One of my fave songs in that movie is this one.
This song is a classic. Anyone who has ever watched the show/movie knows this song . . . I have always loved this song . . . I even like the new version. (I'll post both versions)
