There IS a difference. I frequently buy prepackaged or deli beef, turkey or ham. I sometimes buy the ‘less expensive’ brands at the deli. This week I had a GREAT deal on Sara Lee from the deli. It is SOOO much better but it kills me to pay even the sale price but since I had a coupon too it worked, this week. Not sure about cheese since that is a regulated item except for actual time of aging.
Constanz Thanks for the warning re: Dollar Tree matching coupons to items SOOO carefully. Guess they need to update/reprogram their registers to be more like the major grocery chains, drug stores and Target/Walmart. I figure that will happen about the time my oldest grad enters high school (7 more years).
Think I will place the q on top of the item so it can be checked immediately.

Hi all! today I went to CVS for the first time in a while. I actually needed bottled water for the band and hadn't had a chance to get it before school started. Their brand for $2.44 a case is the best deal I have seen in a while so I grabbed 4 and will probably go back and get more later this week. I also managed to correct a boo boo I made. Because the deals are so less frequent I let 2 ECBs expire. I was pretty annoyed with myself, sespecially because one was a $5 ECB. I still can't believe I did that. Well with Dancin's voice telling me to ask anyway going in my head, I asked if they would still take them even though one was a week expired and the other was two. Well the cashier, who isn't the most easy going by far, said sure no problem. So I got 4 cases of water for $3.76.

As far as sales maybe they are slowing down till the big Black Friday sales for the Christmas season? I know that for me in NJ even when CVS ran the gas card deals we didn't get them at all. We got an ECB instead for God knows what reason. Most of the time I couldn't see a point to buying $30 worth of the stuff since I didn't need them and it wasn't like it was even close to free with those deals. The one time I did get the $10 ECB I remembered real quick why I hate such large ECBs. That thing was basically impossible to roll for me. I ended up just picking something we needed like generic tylenol or mylanta and combined it with a 25% coupon and used the ECB to help pay for most of it and called it a win. Hopefully there will be more things on sale that I can get closer to free to stock up on that I have used up over the year. I just used the last of some things that used to go on sale all the time, but haven't seen a good sale on in a while now. I have been enjoying Staples sales and rewards a lot lately! I can't buy food there but that may be my new fav store. I have also been majorly enjoying doing NBPR rebates now that I have discovered them! Just this past week I got $30 in NCBR rebate checks for buying groceries I wanted. You gotta love that!

Re yeast: my mom used the little yellow packets but taught me to always activate the yeast first. Just empty packet in @ 1/2 c. warm water (not too hot) with a 1/2 tsp. of sugar and let it rise. I use a big coffee mug. That way you know the yeast is activated and you won't get flat bread.

You're right. It is a very slow month. This week there is not one item anywhere that I am buying to add to my stockpiles. I can't remember the last time that that happened. It kind of reminds me of pre-drug chain rewards days. I even wondered if this thread might eventually just die. I really hope it doesn't because it's been so awesome over the years - not only to discuss deals, but to share the triumphs and disappointments that life brings. Hopefully the deals will pick up so there is more to chat about, but we'll just have to see. One thing is for sure. It has been a great ride and a lot of fun saving money with all of you. Just a thought. Maybe instead of making it a monthly thread, we should go back to a single thread until the deals pick up again?Ruby, really NICE job at Meijer! I'm thinking of going back for their Glade custom coupon promotion. I just haven't totally figured out what and how. And, I really could have gone crazy on some of their clearance items. They had some really nice metal with straw insert baskets that could be hung off of a fence for $5.00. I think I looked at them for maybe 15 minutes trying to decide. I decided against it though... On the subject of Dollar Tree coupons, Mashup Mom has some nice suggestions on her blog. ETA: Deranged me's site was saying there was a possible glitch on the following at Wags: "Check this out! Buy three of the 10 ct travel-size Cottonelle wipes and get a $3 RR back! I bought six at 99¢ each (two transactions) and got back two $3 RRs! Note that some of the Walgreens locations sell them for $1.29, which is a total deal-breaker, imo. If you plan to run this deal, make sure you do it before Monday because this $3 RR is only supposed to be attached to the 42 ct packs and I’m pretty darn sure they’ll fix it." If most of you gals agree, instead of labeling the next thread, 'THE OCTOBER 2012 GROCERY CHALLENGE THREAD', I'LL just label it 'THE GROCERY CHALLENGE' and we can see how it goes. What do you gals think? Do you think that it might cause the thread to die out completely more quickly? Hopefully things will pick up so that we'll have to go back to having a monthly thread, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. It makes me soooo .

I've only done one and they gave me a Shell card which is a station we rarely go to. OTOH, I loved it when they were doing the Buy $30/Get a CVS GC. I was able to use $/$$ and coupons to get my OOP really low and roll Black Friday EBs that expire into GCs that don't. I really hope they bring it back this season. It was a great way to convert EBs. Does NJ have some law that disallows the purchase of certain GCs? I saw another GC deal (can't remember what store now) and it specifically said that it was not offered in NJ and another state (can't remember which one). I immediately linked that to your previous posts about no CVS GC deals for you. In CA, gift cards are not allowed to charge a maintenance fee and cannot expire. I like that!!

Good for you!! My CVS used to take expired "anything that was CVS" and had $/$$ out the wazooo. Boy have times changed. My store no longer takes expireds and I get a $/$$ maybe once a month IF I'm lucky. Obviously, it has decreased my shopping at CVS substantially. I used to be in there every week and often several times a week. I didn't go in at all last week and so far, I have no plans to shop there this week. I will check the internet for the CRTs that people are reporting to get and decide whether I'll go in to scan my card. OTOH, I did get to do a survey this morning that paid me $10 in EBs. ;D

NJ has the same laws about gift cards not being able to charge fees and can't expire etc. As far as why we don't get them anymore I haven't a clue. There is no law that I have ever heard of that would preclude it. We used to get them back when we could get the CVS or Amex ones. All of a sudden our ads started saying ECB where every other state says GC. The strange law with coupons and groceries is we have state minumus for milk. so any milk deals that other states get we don't. Plus ofcourse CVS isn't allowed to sell booze. Doesn't it just make you want to move here?

Hound Alert: I'm looking for .75/1 dole smoothie shakers from today's SS (9/9). I could use at least 6. They will be .17 at Giant Eagle after coupon, plus they are running some Steelers promo to go with it. If you're looking for anything in particular, let me know. I have lots of Red Plums.
I only did the CVS gas card deal once, too. Between the awesome scanner coupons I had at the time, I think I got 6 bottles of aussie plus a large bottle of tide for <$2. I was able to use the shell card they gave me but, like dancin, I don't go there much. My grocery store offers great fuel discounts at their affiliated stations, so I prefer to go there.

Thanks to frugalsuz I worked out a razor deal at CVS. My store has the single basic venus for 6.79, so I bought 2 of those and 2 Mach 3 razors. I used the BOGO coupon from this month's PG and 2 $4/1 coupons for the venus, paid <$6 and got back $10 EB. Checkout was kind of weird because they needed manager approval to get all 4 coupons through, and once she approved them they automatically (I think) went through for the full 11.99 value. YMMV on the transaction.
RA is having a similar deal. If I can repeat the transaction, which is a real long shot, I'll have spent enough on venus razors to send off for the $5 rebate giftcard WYB $25.

Meijer: I bought 1 bread, 1 tortilla 10 ct., 2 McCormick pepper, 1 stir fry seasoning, 1 red pepper, 1 yellow pepper, 1 lettuce, 1 bunch bananas, 1 red onion, 1 bunch green onions, and 1 lb. butter. OOP: $.47 after catalinas and coupon
Kroger: I bought 10 pkg. Kraft cheese slices and 1 Lawry's seasoning OOP: $.59 after coupons and catalina--received $10.00 catalina
Walmart: 10 Schick Hydro 5 (pricematched to Menards) OOP: $2.99 after coupons and Olay giftcard
CVS: I got a Venus/Olay razor, Mach 3 razors, and Wesson Oil OOP: $2.44 after coupons, ECB's and received $5.00 ECB (raincheck)
Rite Aid: I bought a Fusion razor and Mach 3 razor, 2 Lysol liquid cleaners, 2 Glad garbage bags, 2 Oreos @ $.99 (raincheck)and 8 incenses OOP: $4.62 after MQs, VV, and UPs--increased UPs to $4.00
I spent $11.11 OOP and saved 91%. I'm trying to keep OOP low this week and will try to see if I can get the rest of my stuff for under $20.00. Love, love, love the Kraft catalina that has been rolling and rolling. Today was the first day I went to CVS in a long time and they didn't have anything I wanted on their summer clearance. A lot of things were only 25% off.

Great job bunniesmom & rubslippers. RA has some good MM deals this week.
Gatorade 32 oz is 1$ each - Buy 10 - get 3$ Up. There is also a monthly deal that is the same - so 4$ for 10 bottles of gatorade.
The No Nonsense organic single pair socks usually 1.99 price is BOGO50%. Buy 2 for 2.98 and get back 5 Up. Limit is 2 on this deal.

CVS ALERT: FREE CENTRUM FLAVOR BURST VITAMINS AFTER CRT & IP!!Free vitamins is something that I rarely take a pass on cuz they're so darn expensive. The SMALLER (6 oz/60 cnt.) bottles of Centrum Flavor Burst vitamins are priced at $6.99. The CRT scanner is giving a $5/1 (supposedly to everyone) and there is a $2/1 IP available from Centrum. It is a bricks coupon and the limit is 2. www.centrum.com/When I went in tonight another gal and I arrived at the vitamin area at the exact same time. She quickly grabbed the last bottle of the Centrum Flavor Burst off the shelf, but the bottle she had looked too big to be 6 oz. I casually kept looking and sure enough, I found the right size and it was the last 6 oz. bottle. I'm sure she stood their thinking, "What just happened?" HAPPY HOUNDING ALL!! ;D

Dancin I believe the no expire, no fees allowed on gc is a recent federal regulation so s/b same for ALL of us.
I prefer the monthly thread. Much easier even if it is shorter (less posts, poor deals). I suspect the deals will be poor for quite a while w/the economy in the ….porcelain throne.
Beach Only a few of my CVS stores have alcohol. Licenses to sell alcohol is a town by town issue in IL and my town is VERY strict but the 2 towns on the way to my Dad are very liberal in granting.

Last night when I got my vitamins, I got a 25% off CRT and since it appears that none of the Gillette razors are on sale, I think I'll try to cobble together a deal on them and Buy $30/Get $10EB. I see emhalf bought the Venus and Mach 3 and rubyslippers bought the Proglide and Mach 3 and frugalsuz shows the Custom 3 and Mach 3, so I have a lot of options. I guess I'll just clip a little bit of everything and go in and see what kind of damage I can do. I just remembered that I have rain checks for the Venus and the Proglide. Hmmm....I wonder if I could piggy back those on this deal? Probably not.

Dancinmama: Thanks for the heads up on the vitamins at CVS. I'm sure my CVS will be out if they're giving the $5 CRT, but I will be sure to get a raincheck. I do have 2/$2.85 IP q's for the gummies as well.
I'm also going to check out the razor deals at RA and CVS. Have to go to the dentist for a cleaning this a.m. so will do some houding afterwards. My reward for being a good girl! ;D

Okay, so I'm doing a little hounding this week after all. This morning I scored at both CVS and Safeway: CVS:$10.99 (1) Proglide Razor ...8.29 (1) Gillette Custom 3 ..11.99 (2) Mach 3 $43.26 . .2.72 Sales Tax $45.98 Subtotal -10.82 (1) 25% off CRT -..5.00 (1) $5/1 Proglide -..3.00 (1) $3/1 Custom 3 -23.98 (2) Buy Razor/Get Mach 3 Free @ $11.99 ea. $.3.18 OOP (on GC) --> $10EB (for buying $30) / $5EB Proglide (rain check) Since the Proglide was not needed to reach $30, they let me buy it with the other razors!! ;D That combined with the 25% off coupon made this a VERY sweet deal!! I got the very last Proglide on the shelf (there I go shelf clearing - AGAIN!! ). The manager had to use a key to unlock it for me. She said some lady came in yesterday and wiped them out. I got more Centrum $5/1 CRTs but since I bought the last two last night, they were out of them so I got a rain check today. She said that I could use the CRT even if it expires. Since this is a new product, maybe there will be a very high value coupon in the inserts like there was for the ProNutrients that will make this a MM. A girl can only hope. Safeway:4.19 Betty Crocker Banana Nut Muffins 2.99 Fiber One Chewy Bar 3.49 Fiber One Nutty Clusters & Almond Cereal 2.50 Betty Crocker Shake & Poor Cupcake Mix 1.99 Motts Fruit Snacks 2.99 Apple Cinnamon Chex 2.00 Progresso Light Soup 1.39 Progresso Meal Starter 2.50 Green Giant Seasoned Steamers (Brocolli) 1.00 Yoplait Greek Yogurt ...69 Yoplait Simplait 25.73 OOP (on GC) --> Will submit for Try Me Free rebate of $25.54. Not bad, considering that I wasn't going to be doing any deals this week.

They only came in the major metro paper which I am lucky to get one copy of. But my major metro paper usually matches your LA Times, so if you know anyone who gets the LA Times, I'm pretty sure they'd have it. HTH

Hi all; I've also been laying pretty low w/coupon shopping. Seems like a lot of the time, even with the coupon, the generic is still cheaper for me. But I do try to search out the best deals from the supermarket flyers, and my pantry seems to be quite full, so I'm going to try to use those things before they expire. I get really mad at myself when I throw away expired food.
I'm with you, beachbum, and have gotten back on the rebate train. I tried to make a note of the states which are NBPR states (stands for no beer purchase required), but it does vary according to the offers. Anyway, if you live in AL, AR, CT, HI, KS, KY, MA, ME, MN, MO, MS, NC, NY, UT or WV, you should really check these out. You can get them on ebay, as they generally don't distribute them in the NBPR states. I will talk to friends and relatives to see if they want, and then get multiples to keep the price down, and share the wealth. Frugalsuz's website shows the rebates she got last month. It kills me how many offers are only for KY, NC & VA - my sister lives in VA but she will not even consider these. Cannot believe that they will send her a check for mailing in a receipt. Oh, well.
twinmama - I think of you often, and hope things are going well. Change is so difficult. Also, I hope you take advantage of every benefit the military offers to troops going through a bad patch. I know the Navy has the Navy Relief, not only for emergencies, but also with advice and support navigating legal and fiscal challenges. I'm pretty sure you are not in the Navy, but whatever branch you are should have something similar. And we're here, giving cyber support! You are inspiring me to get the bread machine out - that loaf looked pretty darn good!
Aloha!

One question - in my quest to get as many possible $$$ as I can, I have tried some standard tricks - couponing, rebates, coke rewards, making craft items to see or give, garage sales, etc. Lately I keep seeing offers on my receipts to do surveys of that companies' service (usually fast food! I know, Bad Hitenney!) but sometimes Home Depot or Safeway in the hopes of winning a prize. Does anybody think these are worth the time they take?

Dancin: I used a raincheck with the Venus and got my ECBs for that and then I used it today to buy 2 more razors and got the $10.00 ECBs. I think it's also counting for the beauty rewards too because I haven't been buying anything at CVS in a long time, but now I'm back in with $10.00 to spend. I'm going to finish up my Wags giftcard on stamps, Windex and a few canned items. I don't see myself shopping there especially with their changes.
