I think I missed an exit ramp somewhere back there... I don't tell DH everything. But then again, he isn't dumb enough not to notice when DD and I got our nails done, and he has a clue to know that those new clothes weren't free. I try to keep it reasonable, but I won't ever lie, but I don't always articulate. And when I come home I can tell you that I spent $403.328-even if you ask me three weeks later. DH's stock answer is , I lost the slip....

Back to the topic . . . (and I read every post to get to this point): Archie, I do think she deliberately took your question literally. She probably did spend $200 on the kids' clothes. Then she spent more on shoes. She also then picked up a few things for herself. But she didn't exactly lie. She only spent $200 on the kids' clothes. That is probably what you asked her. I have a daughter just like this. Her husband is a lawyer and learned to understand this about her. So he always asks the question twice with a "really" attached the second time. The second time she answers the "truth." She doesn't think of it as lying because she feels she is answering the question that was asked. You mean the same way I would answer someone asking me if I had $5 with "no" because I actually $20 on me at the time? (usually someone wanting to borrow the $5 that I knew they'd never repay)

Ooh, my mom used to do that. It used to be fun watching her play this game with dad. He'd get so frustrated finally that he'd give up and she would just smile!

We all spend fractions of a penny. Sales tax is usually X.X so we have these weird fractions that just get rounded up. Or down I suppose, but something tells me they just round them all up and call it a day.

Spend means we pay it out. If we spent a fraction of a penny, we would only pay out the fraction. Since the sales tax is rounded, we don't actually spend the fraction - we spend the whole penny (or the government eats it.)

My ex used to lie about what he spent, but he was a little craftier. He'd use our joint credit card for the amount he wanted me to see on a bill. He had a secret credit card that he'd put the rest on.
It was a $40K surprise when I found out about it. Oh, but it was never stuff for the kids, he was a very selfish man. I think he thought he was James Bond or something. He was a sick fucker.

I just need to get better at communicating. I don't want my wife to feel like she has to lie to me because of my reaction when she tells the truth. Even so, $600 seems excessive even, unless you've got a money tree in your back yard. I have three, with two going to grade school. I spent less than $200 on clothes, and with school supplies including a jansport backpack, I think we came in at about 275. This is meaningless unless you list what you actually purchased. Of course you only spent $275 if the kids each got two pairs of jeans, one pair of shoes, a few shirts and a sweatshirt.

No way those little kids clothes added up to that. I bought a ton of stuff in the mall including two pairs of shoes for a two year old and I didn't hit 200. The shoes were 70 of it but I never scrimp on kids shoes or buy a size too large.

I think I have finally retrained him of the ridiculous crap his parents use to do to be cheap. My daughter is hard on shoes. She would have them destroyed before she grew into them. It just makes sense to buy them properly fitted shoes and throw them out when they are outgrown.

He got five pants, 7 shirts, 3 sweatshirts, and tennis shoes (vans) for around $70. My daughter on the other hand was much more expensive. She was in the $250 range, for 5 jeans, 3 pants and a dozen shirts, bras and underwear, athletic shoes and a pair of converse. The cheap jeans did not fit her properly.

Just wait until the kids get older. My fifteen year old needed uniforms for his school. The school requires you to buy them from certain stores. I had to pay $22.00 + $5.00 for logo monogram for each polo shirt. I also purchased on fleece pullover for $30 + $5 for logo for when it cools down since he hates long sleeve polos. He also needed slacks at $30 each and of course his feet have grown so he needed at least two new pair of shoes. One pair of shoes for gym class and one for daily wear. I found those on clearance at DSW so I only spent $75. Total for clothes so far:
4 polo shirts @ $27= $108 4 pairs slacks@ $30=$120 1 fleece pullover @ $35 gym uniform @ $35 Shoes @$75
None of this includes the clothes he wears at home and on weekends. So he needed shorts, jeans, t-shirts and plain polo shirts.
I forgot he also needed underwear and he only likes boxers so add on another $35 for that. I also had to buy dress socks. We haven't even gotten to winter and he will need a new coat and boots too. I expect the same next year since he is still growing. He has grown 6 inches in the last year so nothing fits from last year!
At least he still has his TI-84 calculator for pre-calc this year! ;D

Did you guys discuss a budget for school clothes before the shopping trip? I know with kids in preschool/daycare it can add up if you have to keep a double set of gear at home and at school.

Did you guys discuss a budget for school clothes before the shopping trip? I know with kids in preschool/daycare it can add up if you have to keep a double set of gear at home and at school. I tell DH when the kids need clothes. He'll either say ok or ask if it can wait until the next CC bill. I tell him what they need and and have a dollar amount I expect to be around (generally $250-400 for EVERYTHING) for pants, shirts, pjs, socks, dresses, undies and a sweatshirt or 2. Shoes are separate trip. Christmas outfits are separate trips. And winter coats/snowpants are separate trips. Mainly because by the time I get that far on the list, I can't take shopping any more... I used to buy last year's sales/clearance but that backfired bigtime last year, so DH and I agreed that I'd not do it this year. DD's a 5T/S and DS is a 4T/5T. They're both in size 11 shoes, I suspect. And in Sept. I'll take DD shopping and let her pick out some/all of her clothes.

I used to buy last year's sales/clearance but that backfired bigtime last year, That is what I'm always nervous of. There is just no way to tell when the kid is going to have a growth spurt, or barely grow an inch and then all the savings is just a pile of wasted money. We're also at an age now where finding used clothing in good shape is much harder. Kids actually do rip/stain/ruin clothes before they wear out at this stage.

So, was there an update here? Did Archie ever get the real number from his wife? Did they discuss it? Did they talk about budgets, control, lying? Anything really?
