'Conservative', 'liberal', 'right-wing', 'left-wing' in the DJ-approved sense are near useless. horsefeathers. legal standards that are skewed toward protecting criminals over victims are liberal. laws that eschew private morality are liberal. preservation of life, liberty and property are conservative. right wing is siding with the elite, and tending towards authoritarianism. left wing is siding toward the people, and tending toward populist governance. i don't think ANY of those are inconsistent with common or historical usage.A "conservative", per the dictionary definition, is somebody who is resistant to change and who wants to "conserve" the status quo, or possibly change it, but at a very slow rate. yes. how does that NOT meet your definition of conservative?A "liberal" is somebody who, in regards to a particular matter, wants to promote change, disregarding tradition (i.e. the way things have been done for a long time). It is nearly synonymous with "progressive", although progressive is a broader class. does the dictionary say it is synonymous with progressive, or do YOU?The terms are so context sensitive they're veritably useless, which is why nobody honours the original definitions. if it were nobody, then who the hell do you think you are arguing with?DJ obviously has a problem with that, but he'll have a problem with it until the day he dies, because it's not going to change. You decide whether that makes him a conservative or a liberal on the issue. every person is a mixture of liberal and conservative. i am, in fact, quite conservative fiscally, and quite liberal socially. from my perspective, that makes me a moderate, but by USian standards, i am a radical liberal. You didn't say "new", you said "like new". As in "unspoiled", "untouched". Pristine. and ancient. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) "Like new" doesn't mean "new" by any stretch of the imagination. correct. that is why i didn't say "like new". i said "NEW"In fact, most ads go out of their way to show how their product can make your old, old photographs appear "like new". ![](http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/smileys/1-1.gif) Use it that way if you dare. dude. i got that from YOUR LINK! LOL! and i use it that way all of the time. i gave you four examples in this thread. nobody laughs when i do it. it is actually the proper use of the word. You'll be like the fellow writing about how "John Wayne pranced into the bar".

Amelia Bedelia comes to mind. ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) Uh huh. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/sarcasm.png) DJ @ Aug 22: "pristine = very small percent. it doesn't mean "like new"." DJ @ Aug 23: "and pristine means "original", not "new"." Virgil sez: ""Like new" doesn't mean "new" by any stretch of the imagination." DJ @ Aug 23: "correct. that is why i didn't say "like new". i said "NEW"" Consistency. It's what's for dinner. It's rather rare that the two are far divorced. Ron Paul would be a true fiscal conservative. I keep hearing the same about Mr. Johnson. Collectively, they make up less than 10% of US popular support. I'm not laughing because I dispute the denotation of the word. I was just picturing you in a conversation. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/tongue2.png) "Mrs. Krumski, I just wanted to tell you that I marvel at your ability to keep everything in such primitive condition."
