Working on movin' over our intro but feel free to post your goals ~start Okie Dokie Wonderful People! It's about time to shake things up around these parts.A few months back Honeylioness had an impassioned plea to get us back to the focus of our thread. The fundamentals. The basics. Plus the friendship. Did y'all know we've successfully planned vacations together? Life keeps on going with new babies, relationships, homes, challenges, jobs and financial hurdles but we stick to it. So, get sticky! Here are some way to get your goals to stick: #1. Post your numbers - just put it at the top of a post in bold and let us know how you're doin' and what you need help with #2. Track your numbers - technically this should be #1 but you know it. If you need ideas for tracking post and ask the veterans for guidance #3. Share your life but please keep it somewhat financially related - we know that everything influences finances especially when we're stressed, tired, excited and busy. BUT this is a financial accountability group, not a therapy session If you want to go off topic consider starting a fresh thread and posting a link so those who are interested can support you there. For the new people there are no real set rules here, you set your own. The basic goal most if not all of us have are to keep track of the days we don't spend and hopefully by that work on saving money. Some are looking to put it into savings others to pay down debt. For some they only count the day as a no spend day if they spend nothing at all. Others will count it if they keep their total under $5. Some count all spending others only count a certain part of their budget. For example MittenKitten personally take $400 out of the the bank in cash for everything that is not related to vehicle expenses (like gas, oil changes, insurance etc) or the house (mortgage, utilities, HOA) If I spend out of the $400 I count it as a spend day (although if it is less then $5 I usually count it as a no spend day.) You set your own rules. Any questions feel free to ask. You can post your no spend days daily or whenever you want, just put it in bold at the top with the first number being the number you want me to record. If you are doing daily then: Today (or yesterday) $0 Spend day More then one day at a time: 4/31 days $0 Spend Which translates into 4 out of 31 days in July have been no spend so far. Some use the bigger number as their goal number so do 4/15 No spend Days which means they have a goal of 15 no spend days this month. Here's a handy guide to some of our terminology: NSD: No Spend Day CSD: Controlled Spend Day BFF: Best Friend Forever DH/DS/DD/DSS: Dear Husband, Dear Son Dear Daughter, fiance, boy friend, Dear Step-Son DIL, MIL, BIL, SIL: Daughter in law, Mother In Law, Brother in Law, Sister In Law NKCW: No Killing Co-Worker Day (could also be no kill DH NKDH etc) NS or NSD: No Spend or No Spend Day NEO: No eating out HTH: Hope This Helps KWIM: Know What I mean FWIW: For What It's Worth IMHO or IMO: In my Humble Opinion or In My Opinion Having a Startsmart Day is referring to when you have 20+ things on your must get done in a day and you accomplish them. Single Mom-KY aka Smokey; MittenKitten aka MK; Pt_In_NY aka Pointy; The Boy is Sheila in Cali's son. Blue is Red_Wagon's DH TBear is MizBear's older niece. ZBear is MizBear's younger niece.

So, we've tried the idea of captains in the past but here's the thing we need volunteers! I know it's busy with summer and travel and all that jazz but if you wouldn't mind taking an hour this month to help the group here's what you would do:
* Create a question of the week (QOTW) and challenge of the week (COTW) related to the question and post it on Sunday * Pop in throughout the week to answer questions, give support, karma and cheer others on. * Post the tally on Saturday for the group for those tracking their numbers.
Wanna help? Just post here or message me and you can take a week!
Honeylioness had a wonderful answer I think really defines WHAT we are about:
"I will admit that during my first two months of lurking, I wondered just how in the WORLD someone could not spend any money at ALL for 25 days? Did they just pay all their bills one day a month, and that same day do the food shopping for the month? Like many new to the concept I saw it as horribly, and restrictively, black or white – an opinion first based merely on the name of the thread.
But once I came to understand that it was not so totalitarian and was more about finding a way that worked for you to track your spending and any “leaks” in the wallet, it has felt more like a tool and less like a punishment. I wish I could say that I have paid off five extra years from the mortgage, or now have an EF of six months take home – but alas that would not be true.
What I do have however is a better awareness of where my “leaks” are, what are my hot buttons that make me want to spend on things I really don’t need or really cannot afford right now. And an awareness of the fact when I AM spending money. I think that awareness is key to learning a new behavior or paradigm. Just like lumberlady (a member that hasn't been a regular lately but is still a much loved part of our community), some of us have had to look hard in the mirror and acknowledge that we had a problem. Until people can do that, be it an addiction to alcohol or drugs or credit cards ….. they will never really GET it."
Thanks Honeylioness!

Hey All, startsmart here. I didn't see the August thread started so I decided to post it before we got too far into the month. Despite my impassioned plea I was rubbish at tracking my numbers last month!
Definitely need to get on board for August since I'm taking three big trips in the next 3 months. Exciting!
Aug 1 - NSD as I just hung out with a friend and then came home to work.
I think tonight I'll finally need to hit the grocery store for milk and I might as well fill up with gas in the car for the weekend.
Goals- 15 NSD (100% no spending except regular bills) 5 CSD there's the fair, sbcalimom and my parents visiting this weekend, a trip to SF to meet with clients and preparing for the Sept and Oct trips.

Hi, I'm in again. My goal is scaled back a bit since I'm on vacation part of the month and I don't know how my NSD's will look. So for August, I'm going for a combo of 15 NSD/CSD's together in any order.
I would probably be able to the last week as captain if you're in need of volunteers. It's the only week I'll have guaranteed internet access all week.

Nervous, nervous, nervous! I could use all kinds of good juju tomorrow... Meeting the new York times photographer who is shooting my colleague. They contacted her the day before and so now I'm worried they want to shoot here on Saturday! Spent some time cleaning up the front yard (where I want to stage) and I estimate needing 4-5 hours to prep the day before.
Here's my plan again (planning calms me...): Move swinging bench to the side yard Mow the front lawn Trim the mint back from the planter Use leaf blower to clean out dead leaves Close the windows and hose down the windows Go to home depot and pick up soil Buy 2 outdoor chairs from home depot Go to walmart and pick up a few flats of bright flowers and a fern Put out Ikea rug Move out white side table Move out pillows to the chairs Clean up the kitchen and guest bathroom
That's it, I think, except the whole issue of me choosing clothes, make up and doing my hair. Eeek! So excited! Pot the plants, water them

Okay I'm in I'm at 2 so far and will shoot for 15 NS/CS
Vent- The server at our office crashed overnight last night. Our tech support company had to go buy new hard drives and install from the back up server that we have. Still we have been down close to 24 hours now (we didn't know we were down the first 12. After they got the operating system reinstalled they started transferring over the data and about 3/4 of the way through realized they they were using an older backup instead of the one that was done at 8pm last night. So I'm waiting for a call that it is done and we are functional. Luckily my boss was out of the office or the situation would have been much more stressful. We did get a ton of cleaning done around the office today. I think we took 4 boxes to recycling and 3 bags to the trash.
Start- Good luck!

3cats- great post! I love seeing all that you've accomplished. I did want to answer you on this since I updated the intro last month: Two years ago when I was going through a bad time, I came on here and you helped me through it with your words of strength and comfort. I really appreciated it. Now that I am going through it again, "this is not a therapy session"? Well thanks. Good bye. For reference, here's some of the general guidelines/goals that I think 3cats is referring to: #3. Share your life but please keep it somewhat financially related - we know that everything influences finances especially when we're stressed, tired, excited and busy. BUT this is a financial accountability group, not a therapy session If you want to go off topic consider starting a fresh thread and posting a link so those who are interested can support you there. First, this is totally my wording and opinion. Since I've noticed a lack of leaders in starting the thread, suggesting topics and captaining I've been starting the monthly thread and trying to be more involved. What's frustrating to me may not reflect the group and I know that. I also recognize that we all have lives and worries and challenges ahead and this group is a great resource. I wouldn't even think of your posts as "therapy sessions" 3cats. Throughout everything you do the posts do relate to your finances at work, with your family, savings, renovations, etc. And yes struggling with depression influences your life and goals as well - it's encouraging to me that you share that and we can encourage you in good times and bad. To me the stated purpose of this thread, (based on my participation for the past 4 years and title) I believe, is that we're here to help each other reduce unnecessary spending and exhibit more control on our finances. So why did I edit that in the intro? Because I've talked with dozens of posters, some active, most inactive now, who have said versions of the same complaint. That this group is different, not concerned about finances, not sharing our lives in the same way to uplift and encourage each other and I'm attempting to acknowledge and stop the downward spiral. Personally I don't want to post here if it's all about negativity, victim-hood and not taking responsibility for our actions (financial and otherwise). As Honey pointed out last August: I understand that certain days generate a lot of posts and information, and some may feel overwhelmed by the volume. But I cannot say that quantity alone can account for one of my concerns. I have felt for several months now that some posters are either inadvertently overlooked or just outright ignored. I have seen newcomers, recent members and even long time posters receive NO acknowledgment of their presence - never mind their situation or request for information. Yet others seem to receive waves of responses and suggestions. and: I like that bonds form where we can feel safe sharing out struggles as well as our successes. That we exchange information and ideas and high-fives for ways of saving our budgets even $5. In no way did I mean to suggest that you should not feel free to tell us what is going on. I just feel that we have lost some focus. So that was my attempt to keep us on topic by suggesting that if you have on-going dramas or situations that are not related to this no spending challenge to dedicate a thread to it so we can keep the focus here on controlling spending. I still feel guilty and nervous about spending so much time and money yesterday on the flowers and soil!I'm wondering then if there's not an interest in controlled/no spend accountability if we should abandon ship and have a general chat thread like the Smart Spending group does?

Update 2 NSD Wed and Thurs were no spends. Friday was a big fat spend - about $150 total for the flowers, a huge bush that I'll plant in the backyard and 4 yards of soil. I'd budgeted for them but spending the money still hurt lol. Still this month I borrowed a steam cleaner for the carpets saving myself $100, sbcalimom cleared out her freezer for the move and I've been living off those things for a week lol, I haven't been out to see Batman or any new movie in, oh, 9 months and I've yet to buy any summer clothes, shoes or bathing suits with the exception of $20 in shirts/flip flops from Old Navy in June. I haven't even gone to the Farmer's Market yet this summer, buying all my fruit and vegetables from the co-op twice a month. So I know it's still balanced spending, even if that much on flowers for the patio makes me nauseated. Does it look decent at least? lol here's the other side btw: (not pictured are all the flowers that went into the beds lining the walkway) I want today to be a no spend - returning some picture frames to Wal-Mart and I may use the cash back to find a new doormat. Otherwise it'll be home to finish cleaning for sbcalimom and hanging out with my family this weekend.

Update: 3NSDs -- The first three days I was back at school and did the usual go to school and drive home where I would collapse for a nap. I will have to stop this very soon but I know part of the problem is the high temperatures when I get to leave. Today was a definite spend -- new school supplies and computer items including a new portable hard drive plus it was a state tax holiday so it was a good day to do this.
Start -- I want to personally thank you for all you have done. I wish I had the time to promise to take a week this month but the first few months of school are hard for me due to all the late night meetings that I have to attend. Once things calm down some I will try to take a week.
I like to come here as a way to stay accountable to myself that I am staying the course. For me it is the challenge to get as many nsds as possible. I think we have lost some posters because of issues in their personal life. Remember with all we do know about each others that in the four years we have been together many of us have had major changes in our lives. We have lost family members, gained family members (at least four births and several more on the way), a few marriages, job changes for better and worse, home issues from renovations, replacement items to moving to new addresses. All of these items have changed us as individuals -- some posted more and others less. I like the board to continue with the focus on ns/cs as I feel that as we find the leaks in our finances we can become better money managers as we face whatever the future throws at us.
3cats -- I always find your posts so inspiring since I remember all of the struggles you went through when you first joined us. Are you still purchasing your gift cards?

I'm in for as many NSD as I can get
I have internet access today! My ISP is having issues whenever the temps go over 100* so I never know when, or if, or how long I can use the internet.
Even if I don't post, I keep reading as long as the connection lasts. Hopefully, this heat will soon break and life can get back to normal.
I went out to breakfast with friends this morning and learned a lot. Some of my friends who were there are ranchers in the area (I live in the middle of beef country) and were saying they have been having to sell off herds because of the drought and the lack of feed and water for the cattle. It is so dry(1.03"rain in July) that some ranchers are having to deny access to their farm ponds to the wildfire fighter crews. It is sad having to choose between the possibility of fires or starving herds. They said we might see a drop in the prices of meat in the short term, due to the flood of meat from the herds flooding the market, then expect to see prices on meat as well as other food products increase, some are saying 5-7% the rest of this year and more next year. The price of corn has increased 50% in the last month and wheat even more so.
I had been hearing of the coming increase in food prices on the news, but hearing about it so close to home is really frightening. I am planning to do a bit of "stocking up" when feasible. (cat food)
I've noticed the price of gasoline is increasing too, due to the increased cost of ethanol. Glad I don't have a long commute anymore.
I'm losing my connection so I have to go. Be back sometime.

I'm stuck at 2. I was hoping today would be a CS, but on the way home from church DH's brakes started making a grinding noise, so he took them apart and figured out he needed new brake shoes. In the process of getting one of them off he broke a part so he had to go get it. So instead of costing $20 it cost $40. Yesterday was a spend because of poor planning by my IL's. They wanted to do a family trip to the zoo. Which is fine we have a season pass, we normally pack a bunch of snacks and just eat a late lunch when we get home. But they didn't bring much in the way of snacks and decided to eat lunch there. So we ended up spending $13 on crappy food for the 3 of us. I had spent $3 in cash (which I don't count when I spend) for popcorn earlier when we thought we were in line to get into a show, but were really in the line for Spiderman. Luckily I figured it out before we stood there for 30 mins. 3cats- You are always welcome to vent here.

Rocky Mtn. Saver: 3 NSD/CSD's It was a relatively quiet weekend, with a lot of getting ready to be gone on vacation for 1 1/2 weeks. Lots to do! Yesterday was an NSD thanks to movie night at my house: a library DVD and microwave popcorn.

Update 3 NSD
Saturday was grocery shopping, Sunday just a cash spend for tea and Monday (today) I picked up some cut flowers for the photo shoot.
It was a pretty hectic and crazed weekend, I can't begin to describe all that happened. Thankful for the distractions though! Last night I went out to the gym pretty late to swim and it was so relaxing. One of my barista boys made me a green tea with honey and it put me to sleep! Also blue eyes has an adorable brother who sent me coffee (Via from Starbucks) in the mail this week! Isn't that cute?
Adding to my list this week to send out my thank you cards for a bunch of people.

3Cats - Please feel free to vent here when you need to Start - The photos look very nice I'm in for 12NSDs this month. I have gotten off track in recent months and could use some accountability. I'm still working my temp job and I really like it. My DH is in between jobs right now so money is still tight. He should be starting a job with the state soon, but even then it still takes a few weeks for the paychecks to start. So I need to keep better track than I have been. My son is now a year and 2 months, and is eating like a horse. I'm still experimenting to see what foods he will like but I need to keep the grocery bill in check. We have about $14,000 in cc debt and it makes me ill to think about it. I'd like to buy a house someday, but it seems very far off. I want to get rid of this debt before we look for a house, but I don't know if I should start saving for a downpayment at the same time I'm trying to pay this off or just wait til I get rid of it and then start saving. Advice? I have a lot of thoughts going on at the same time and it sometimes keeps me up at night.

nuttinhoney: My first question would be, what is/are the interest rates on your cc debt?

Nuttin- At the current interest rates I would payoff the CC's first then save. You will be paying more in interest on the cc's than you'd be earning saving some.

start - yard looks great!!!
3cats - you are such an inspiration and your posts DO relate to finances so please don't stop coming on here.
I'm having a really hard time really focusing on financials with all the baby stuff. But we do have our Home Depot and Lowe's cards paid off, before the 1-year interest free period is over, so that's pretty exciting. We love our fixed fence and our new bay window. No more drafts coming through! Other cards are getting paid down at a slower rate but once the two store ones are gone we'll roll those payments over. So, some progress is being made although I'm not as obsessed with it.
We are still trying to figure out our hardwood floor situation. Home Depot won't install the wood we want since it's online-only and clearance, because of some computer program that won't acknowledge that it exists. I don't really understand it, but we are likely not going to go with them after all. Goodby $35 measure fee, but oh well. At least we know how much we need to buy, and we might downgrade to laminate hardwood which is what is in the rest of the upstairs. That is from Lowe's. And my BIL will install it for us, bringing us from Home Depot's initial estimate of $1500 to just about $500 plus a nice bottle of booze for BIL. And probably a steak dinner for him and his family lol. So I'm excited about the savings, not so much that it will likely not get done until September because of COURSE the laminate that matches is backordered until then. Le sigh.
But, in happy news, many of the "big ticket" items on our registry have been purchased, which is a huge relief, and I can't wait to hug and thank whoever bought us two cribs, two high chairs, two car seats, a stroller, etc. Haven't had my showers yet but feel incredibly lucky to have such loving and generous friends and family.
DH's new position is going well, although they are sending him to Boston this week. Here's praying I don't have any baby-related medical emergencies while he's gone!!
nuttin - glad you are enjoying your job!! And I hear you on the CC debt. We really want to buy a new house next year so the kiddos will have their own rooms (esp. since boy/girl) as they get older, but we want to really work on the CC debt too. We have some goals we feel we can accomplish by the new year, although obviously if our real baby costs don't align with what we've budgeted things will change. We shall see. Just keep plugging along. Are you on the racers thread? I found that very motivating when I had time to keep up with it. I really should go back there...

My oldest cat, Cocoa, died in my arms on July 16th at 3:30 in the morning. That whole month I cried at the thought of losing her even though I still had the other two in the house and the one that goes outside during the time I work. I cried the rest of the month at her loss. I had had her for 18 years and her birthday was July 4th. I got her on my birthday in September. I got 2 sympathy cards from the emergency room vet and my regular vet. I knew that she was getting bad because she couldn't walk very far without getting winded. The er vet tried to get blood from to check her kidney function or something and she stressed. They didn't want me to be with her but I kept going to the window. They finally brought her in to me to see if I could calm her down. I was holding her and talking to her when her head fell back and she peed on my leg. I knew it was over. They gave me a box to bury her in and I came home. I went to work that night but cried most of the time. The next day DS dug a hole and we buried her out back by their dog that had died. Now when the other 2 don't act the way I think they should, I start fretting over them and thinking this is it for them. I did not post anything on here and my spending did not suffer that much although I didn't keep track. Since I use my debit card for everything, it is still trackable but at this time, I just don't care. August update: 3 NSD, 3 NEO.

Rocky Mtn. Saver: 4 NSD/CSD's. Hoping to get an NSD today. I have some tasty leftovers for lunch at work, which I'm really looking forward to. Now, all I have to do is not think of anything I need to stop and pick up after work.

3Cats - I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have two cats and as much as they annoy me lately, I love them dearly. Our one cat, Gavin, is 4 years old today. I just wish he would stop chewing through all our charging cords. He is getting quite expensive to entertain. As for the cc debt, its over 3 cards cc#1 - closed and am paying it off - ~$1800 at 7.9% cc#2 - ~$6,800 at 14.24% cc#3 -~$4,500 at 12.99%

Nuttin: I agree with dakota, you should definitely get rid of that cc debt before aggressively saving for a house. The interest rates are costing you a good bit. I recall that you've been dealing with unemployment so lowering your required payments by reducing those balances would surely help your peace of mind too! ETA: Have you joined the WIRR in your region? They can be very encouraging and helpful!

Rocky and Dakota - Thank you for the advice. I kind of thought the same but thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. I'm already 30 and feel behind the ball not owning a house. It didn't bother me in my 20's but now that I have my son I have a stonger urge to feel settled. I have a temp job with the state that goes til the end of the year and possibly longer. My DH is about to start a job for the state also (permanent), but it takes 3-4 weeks to start getting paid (and he has been out of work since the end of June) so its been tight. I know getting serious about the debt payoff will be such a weight off my mind. The stress is really getting to me. Thank you again for the advice

3cats - my heart goes out to you. My childhood cat just turned 18 and while I don't see her often, I can tell she is not doing so well. I dread the day. A million hugs to you. Cats really are the best (as much as I love dogs).
