Long story short:
I have been looking for a job for quite some time.
Found one
They offered me 8k more than I make now and great benefits. Told current employer- two week notice
My 64 year old co-worker decides to go part-time because she doesn't want to lose flexibility, and doesn't want to do the part of the business that I do and doesn't want to learn it etc.
Husband is already retired she works just to get away from him
Boss offers me raise and gets me to stay ( because she is going part time)
I stay
She has now decided that she wants to stay full-time.
The other job has already been given to someone else and I am screwed royally, no raise no nothing. She said that our job is "easy money" and doesn't;t want to leave.
Mind= Blown
If I didn't;t have kids, responsibilities and bills and the fact that I am a mature adult. I would quit
I am not a crier at all and I am just so angry right now I am balling

Sounds like they played you like a fiddle. I'd be pissed too.
Keep looking for a new job. And the next time your boss counters you with a raise offer you will know he is full of sh|t.

Boss offered you a raise to stay. You should get the raise. Boss needs to deal with coworker. No way he should go back on your offer, just because she changed her mind. If you don't get what you want, start looking again.

I'm going to... the raise was contingent on what she would save on co-workers salary if she went part time.. She didn't tell me that at the time.
I am just done

Thanks all... You are the first people I told. I feel so stupid. my parent's took me to dinner to celebrate my raise. I was feeling like my ship has finally come in after waitign around and hoping that I would recognized. My boss said that whenever co-worker decided to go part time I could have the raise but that could be years from now.

That is pretty low. The good news is - you found out you're worth at least $8K more on the open market. And you got a job offer! So keep looking, and when you start feeling down, just picture the look on your boss's (and coworker's) face when you get to say "smell ya later."* (Alternatively, "F you, F you, you're cool, F you, I'm outta here" from Half-Baked. )

Holy crap! I would be hella pissed too. I hope you find another job quick. I don't know if it is a good idea or bad idea, but you might want to sit down with the boss & tell them as soon as you find another job you are out of there unless you get the raise immediately. And explain you feel completely screwed over & it isn't your fault the other co-worker chose not to go part time. Pretty much say that you stayed for your fucking raise & you want the raise. That might not go well though

I cannot believe your boss thinks she can get away with treating you that way. Does she not understand consequences?
I'm so sorry.

That might not go well though That's what I would be inclined to do as well but I am also single with no kids. If I was responsible for another human being I might have to bite my tongue due to possible consequences but with it just being me I would probably say pretty much exactly what angel wrote. I might leave out the F word

I would go to my boss and ask when they'd like me to start training so-and-so on your job responsibilities. That might make so-and-so reconsider going to part time right now if she doesn't want to do those duties. And if boss asks why you'd train her since you're staying, you note that you were staying based on getting a raise, and since the raise is gone you don't foresee staying around too much longer as you're still looking for other employment at a higher salary.
Don't yell, don't freak out, make it appear as if you're trying to be a good employee and do them a favor. There are 3 outcomes. So-and-so does go to part-time to avoid doing your job. They give you the raise to keep you. They don't give you the raise and you find a new job and leave. I guess 4, they could fire you, but that seems unlikely if you go about this in a professional and helpful-smile way.
ETA: Also the more you can phrase things as being beyond your control the better.
"You're not staying?"
"Well I'm staying for now, but I only agreed to turn down the other job because you offered me a raise. I already had an offer for significantly more money someplace else, it's not like I have much choice, you pulled back on the raise so I'm back to looking."
It's not your fault you're still looking, they're forcing you to leave by pulling back the offer. But again, always with a helpful attitude.

That really does suck and very unethical on your boss's part. I would definitely be pissed too. Keep looking, I bet you will find something even better!

I vote not a good idea. It's an employers market, so telling your boss that you're just killing time until you find something better doesn't sound wise to me, even if you are totally justified in feeling that way in this particular instance. Besides, she just gave you a counter offer to stay, it's not like she doesn't realize you want out... unless she's dumber than a box of rocks.
This part I don't mind so much. Keep it professional, obviously, but I see no problem asking your boss about the raise you were promised with no mention of it being contingent on something totally outside of your control. That's a shitty way to treat employees/run a company, and your boss should know better... again unless she's dumber than a box of rocks.

I was under the impression that it was usually a very bad idea to stay at your current employment if/when they match your current offer.
Is this not the case anymore?

Well...she didn't say they matched her current offer, just that they offered her a raise. For me, I'd probably stay if the move was lateral but just more money, but leave if the money was the same and the new job was a promotion. I think some of it depends on why you'd be leaving.

I'm super-pissed for you, because your boss sounds like my boss. I'm looking, too, and I know he'll do exactly the same thing your boss did to get me to stay. I'll consider myself well and thoroughly warned.
And this means you will find another, even better job. I see no harm in letting the company that made the job offer know that you'll still be interested if things don't work out with their new hire, BTW. Heck, you never know.

I make 30k salary now plus she pays all of my health insurance about 4k per year...
The offer 38,500 plus the benefits are good
Boss offered back at 36k plus all my benefits and would fund a HSA at 2k per year. There is also a lot of flexibility here and I get 6 weeks time off per year.
But all is off the table unless she goes part time. I took lunch and went and cooled off but I am still angry

::But all is off the table unless she goes part time.:: You know what made her say she was going part-time the first time. Start training her! Awesome idea. Mention to current boss about the benefits of cross-training. Have boss come out with the plan to implement it. Watch Ms 'I'm going to stay since I won't have to do the hard stuff' decide that part time was what she should have taken in the first place.

Wait just to be clear, is it your co-worker who's going part time? Or is it your boss? I just re-read it and started being a little unsure
