So you've met people who identify as hillbillies? Talked with them at length? Stayed a while in a hillbilly community and gotten a feel for their lifestyle? For example, I can say that I've experienced the culture of the Albertan Hutterites "in the real". Likewise for the Metis of Saskatchewan, and the Sweetgrass First Nations (a.k.a. Indigenous Peoples a.k.a. Aboriginals a.k.a. Indians). I've seen National Geographic documentaries on life in rural China and had friends describe their experiences there in detail, hence I have a reasonable idea of what life is like there. And I've been all over the US, although mainly in large cities, and mainly in the Northeast, Arizona, Oregon, and Silicon Valley. I've never been to a Hillbilly community. I've never discussed the subject with somebody who has. All I know about them is from television, where scientists wearing perfect makeup and skin-tight leather pants strut the crime scene at 7:00 PM and have the murderer locked up by 9:00 AM the next morning. You're saying your experiences with hillbillies go well beyond this? So not only have I met hillbillies , I'm related to, said hillbillies......nuff said.

I must admit, parties involving naked jumps into mud puddles don't rank any higher on my list than parties involving binge drinking. ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

I've been a hillbilly all my life, Virgil, and I've never seen any naked mud puddle jumping. I have seen where I live now, the males of our species have an unexplainable need to drive trucks and ATV's though them.

The western Canadian press often calls four-wheelers and ATVers "cityots"—mainly because they flock out of the cities to provincial parks on long weekends and destroy absolutely everything, both ATV-approved and not.
I went ATVing in Death Valley during one visit to Nevada. I had a great time. But I could see why people would get upset over trucks and ATVs, especially in off-limit areas. They can shred the terrain in a matter of days.

I don't think anybody gets upset about it, since it's usually done on your own property or the property of another who is along with you. I just don't see the point.
But I guess someone who's never been skinny-dipping in the moonlight in a nice cool farm pond wouldn't see the point in that either. To each, his own, huh?

Exactly. And then I have to take a casserole over to their homes because his wife is busy working 12 hours while he is laid up at home with a broken collar bone.

My 70 year old brother nearly killed himself on an ATV goofing around. << cracked his ribs in 9 places and knocked out all his front teeth >> So don't think that they get any better as they get older, cause they just don't.

I think this is the first time an EE thread has drifted off topic to the subject of Hillbillies. I'll take credit, thank you very much. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/charmed.png)

This has become such a big deal here in NJ that it is actually gotten political. Most people just don't have the acres to do it on their own property. As a result they do most of it on the roads, parks and other poeple's property. Most people don't exactly enjoy having all that noise, dust and destruction going on next to their house or in the park they like to go to.

Well, as far as your comment about ATV's and ripping up the landscape and campgrounds of Alberta, they're pretty much banned in most of them now. There's a few left, (mostly privatley-owned), but as long as the ATV'ers stay there and 'play' on those things on land they've already destroyed, then all's well and the rest of the beautiful province will stay intact. I only have a couple of friends who drive them but they're on ranches where they use them to go out and check on their herds, or to go fishing at streams & creeks on their own property.

When I left five years ago, the city officials were talking about a complete ban being "a possibility". "Possibility" evidently became reality. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Those few were the ones the news commentators called the "cityots". ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) And I guess the conversation has gone full circle, because when they found a campground trashed due to partying or ATVing, i) alcohol and heavy drinking were almost always involved, and ii) the offenders tended to be in my age demographic.

As the President and Secretary of our local ATV Club, I feel I must comment about ATVs tearing up the land. Not all users are reckless and rude. Unfortunately, a small few ruin it for us family-oriented, safe riders. In 2010, our club alone volunteered over 250 hours working with the Forest Service and BLM with clean ups and other community events. It IS very political-enviro groups want more and more public lands to become wilderness. More wilderness is not good. For instance, the current fire in Colorado. What happens if all of that was wilderness? Firefighters wouldn't be aloud to go in and fight it. A huge chunk of NJ is a national forest preserve. So it is supposed to be natural. It does destroy the land. I don't care if someone has a huge swath of land that they want to be used like this but that isnt' what has happened here. All that has gone on here is a free for all with people riding their ATV's on other people's property or public land that they didn't have the right to ride on and then complaining that they should have had the "right". The argument has been made as to why someone would get an ATV in a state like NJ when they know that there is no place to ride it in the state. I have never heard an answer to that one.

Iggy, the problem people here are not the kids. i put all the blame squarely on the parents. These people have plenty of money and are sure not to let their kids do this by their homes.
There also have been accidents from people trying to "get away" from the cops. It is a shame for a young life to get cut short because the parents are imbeciles.

We were posting at the same time. The problem is that NJ is just too small and densely crowded. There simply is no place to put an ATV park. The land that is preserved as not to be built on is either a Forest preserve or wetlands or a park in the middle of a town. This really has no easy solution here in the state. The good news is that NJ is only an hour wide and surrounded by PA, DE and NY. I have heard they have lots of open space. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) ETA I should say we have over a hundreds of miles of beach an dunes also. it is beautiful! Anyone want to see a senior citizen move fast? Ride an ATV over the dunes. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/yikes.png)

I can't figure out whether you're implying a) we're senior citizens, b) we're attempting to run down senior citizens, or c) we've just come flying over the top of a dune in our ATVs and senior citizens are scrambling to get out of our way. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/tongue2.png)

Sugi, sorry to hear your brother got hurt on an ATV. I worked with a teen who got killed on one of those things. People gotta learn to respect their power, and the fact that they DO tip on inclines. A different former coworker got part of their scalp torn off (& they WERE wearing a helmet). ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) If you're gonna play with an expensive toy, I prefer snowmobiles! ;D

But it's that mentality << even at his age >>, that he's bigger << no doubt stupider >> than everything else. He really messed himself up with his own insanity. I don't have to wonder about other peoples sanity, my own family keeps me well occupied with that.
