I'm floored. Archie (who is a satirist, has a well-known black sense of humour, and has the thickest skin of anybody on the board) accuses me of putting together a substandard rant. I respond with a large-font, bold-face, hyperbolic, stuttering, rambling exclamation-point-riddled all caps rant about how he plays "Dungeons with Dragons" (sic), can't tell the difference between a newt ("or gecko or whatever") and a dragon when he has a bearded dragon as an avatar, how "kids these days" are rotten to the core despite Archie being decades older than I am, how "fat and pimply-faced" he is when I have absolutely no clue what he looks like and everybody here knows this. I use nonsensical jargon like "hang me by the balls, mary" (you know, that expression I always all the time everywhere use) and start talking about "teenagers these days". ...and maybe... ...just maybe... ...possibly... it might be a tiny bit satirical. ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) Satire is dead, Archie, my friend. That's it. The cutain's coming down. The ship is out of the habour. No more rants about how the UN's "Machine Guns for Monkeys" initiative is ruining our nation, because evidently somebody somewhere could construe it as legitimate. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

Moon: I know you were responding to the reports. And I'm guessing you got PM'd about it. So obviously you weren't the only one who felt it was over-the-top. I agree. Most notably because I was aiming for "extreme", "on the edge of sanity", and "lacking cohesion" per Archie's 'A' standard. And it does make sense, in retrospect, that satire emulating a genuine rant is a fairly large loophole in the CoC, hence I have no problem with the deletion. What floored me is that the reporter(s) believed it was legitimate. As in, we live in a world where people suddenly transform into insane ranting Hillbillies. Because that's what you'd have to believe given the post was I mentioned that the only "mature" parties I attended with an under-25 crowd growing up were with an international student society.
I suspect those kinds of groups attract more temperate, civic-minded individuals, but the fact that participants come from cultures where drunkenness and lewdness are considered bad things certainly helps.
<Insane Hillbilly Rant Here>
Water under the bridge, anyway. And if I caused offense, Archie, I apologize. I do realize you can tell the difference between a newt and a bearded dragon, and that you don't spend your days playing "Dragon Dungeons" on your i-Twitter.

PGed 13 ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) I always thought PG 13 meant pregnant at 13. See what happens when you get old, left behind in the new terminology ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/idunno.gif)

I don't know exactly what this is about but I'll try ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) We have taught our kids the ugliness of materialism. They have grown up thinking they have to have the biggest and the best... as its the only way they can display worth. but its never enough....... They have to have flashing lights and the latest gadgets.....but it never makes them truly happy. They are depressed when they realise that they cannot afford to fund their favoured lifestyle when they leave home...and actually, the world doesnt owe them a living at all. They are, in fact, not that special. We, the parents... have done it. We spoiled our offspring. We lived vicariously through them and gave them the things that we wished we had had. Perhaps we should have said "no" more often.. We have created a sickness.... and we can only blame ourselves. Kids have to learn to appreciate the little things....then they'll always have a world full of riches. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Maybe it's a racist indiscretion, but "Hillbilly" was the only group I could think of that would use an expression like "hang me by the balls, Mary, that's stupid".
I mean... I think I've heard P&Mers use it a couple of times... but their heart really wasn't in it, you know?

Actually, some of the portrayals aren't that far fetched. Perhaps a tad bit exaggerated but not much! I believe the term originated in Appalachia (people who reside in the "hills" without much contact with the outside world). Now, it's basically a term referring to really really "country" people. But? The hillbillies I know have a lot of concern for their testicles and would not, even in jest, suggest that someone string them up by them! So that's why I said it sounded Canadian!

Come visit Florida, but drive your way down. You'll get to know the different hillbilly (aka redneck) types. Yes, there are indeed rednecks in the Northeast! ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png)

So what is this all about, 15-35 year olds (twenty years or so defines a generation), are all tech savvy, gadget addled binge drinkers who are so lacking in imagination that they can’t tear themselves away from their computer/phone screens to organize a softball game, or a right proper, all night dancin’ and a hollerin’ hootenanny down by the barn, under a harvest moon?
Meh, you could always expand your social circle.

So you've met people who identify as hillbillies? Talked with them at length? Stayed a while in a hillbilly community and gotten a feel for their lifestyle?
For example, I can say that I've experienced the culture of the Albertan Hutterites "in the real". Likewise for the Metis of Saskatchewan, and the Sweetgrass First Nations (a.k.a. Indigenous Peoples a.k.a. Aboriginals a.k.a. Indians).
I've seen National Geographic documentaries on life in rural China and had friends describe their experiences there in detail, hence I have a reasonable idea of what life is like there.
And I've been all over the US, although mainly in large cities, and mainly in the Northeast, Arizona, Oregon, and Silicon Valley. I've never been to a Hillbilly community. I've never discussed the subject with somebody who has. All I know about them is from television, where scientists wearing perfect makeup and skin-tight leather pants strut the crime scene at 7:00 PM and have the murderer locked up by 9:00 AM the next morning.
You're saying your experiences with hillbillies go well beyond this?
The point of the expression is more "that's so stupid, I'd prefer the pain of...". Not unlike "shoot me now".
Canadian men do indeed value our "boys".
