Where would you pick?
As I was about to go out to dinner with friends last night, my mother said "let's move". I said "where to?" She said anywhere, where would you want to live? And I realized I don't really know. I've lived in the same area for most of my life - all of my adult life.
I have been thinking about making a change, but I had been thinking about if I could find the "perfect" job and just move to wherever it was. I never thought of it the other way around - like pick a place and then find a job.
So give me some ideas. Where would you pick (preferably in the U.S.) and why?

Summers are that way but I'd rather that than the Midwest. We had a mild winter and it still sucked. I want to go home! Plus, you have the water and beaches and pools to cool off in. I really don't remember being miserable. I just knew I was HOME when I first moved there. Nothing has felt like home ever since. All my happy memories are there even though I got divorced there. But I was still in Florida so I didn't lose everything.

Every time I'm in NH or Maine, I love it so much I wish I could live there. It's so beautiful, the summers are reasonably mild, and the skiing in winter is great. There's a lot of snow, but it's an area where people are used to dealing with snow and it tends to get plowed and removed quickly. I live in the mid-Atlantic and that is NOT the case here!
One of my coworkers was formulating a plan to move to Hawaii a couple of years ago, and that sounded pretty fantastic also. Maybe not long term there, but I could probably do 5 years at least.
My retirement goal is to be able to live and experience different places, and not just travel and visit for a week or two. I'm thinking a winter in the South of France, a summer in Sweden, etc. Getting a visa is much easier when you can prove that you have sufficient income and won't need to find a job.

Hawaii sounds heavenly, but too expensive. I think I'm afraid of CA - mudslides, fires, earthquakes, broke state government. I've wondered about FL - and I know hardly anything about Colorado.
Aliciar - what makes Colorado so wonderful?

I'd like to move someplace where I don't have to shovel snow in the winter.  Hawaii sounds good! Any other suggestions? (Low taxes, etc. would be a plus too!) |

The area (Far Northern CA) we live in is beautiful, with lakes, rivers, trees and decent seasons. It's not a HCOL area, so not a gazillion people living here. The only problem is it's in the BS state of California. I keep hoping that our part of the state will break off and become a state of it's own. We have nothing in common with the Southern part. A good earthquake could accomplish that for you very easily. |

DH and I are considering retiring around Asheville NC. It's up in the mountains so it isn't as blazingly hot as the part of the south we currently live in (NW GA). Absolutely fabulous scenery. Compared to the straight laced city we currently live near, it's fairly liberal (they have a big artist population there). Cold enough in the winter they get some snow. And again - the scenery - right in the Smoky mountains.
If we should retire fabulously wealthy (we won't) I would also love to have a winter home in Savannah, Ga, right downtown in the historic section, maybe a Victorian on Forsyth park. Savannah is laid out to be a perfect walking/biking city, has amazing buildings from colonial period homes up to Victorian beauties, very liberal/artistic vibe to it (it's legal to walk around downtown with an open container of alcohol - almost unheard of in the South - DH and I like to get a 'to go' cup at our favorite pub). However, Savannah in the summer is almost unbearably hot and humid, so I wouldn't want to attempt to live there year round.
What we would really like to retire to is a community with a small downtown area - grocery stores, pharmacy, library, etc. all within walking distance of some comfortable cottages/condos. In retirement, I would love to give up my reliance on my car and walk everywhere I go. Haven't found a community like that yet - would love to hear if other YM's have.

I've spent a (very) little time in London and I loved it, but I'm looking for a rest of my life place and for me that means somewhere in the U.S. Then if I pick a place the next step would be having the nerve to actually pick up and leave. |

If money is no object it would be Hawaii hand down!
Even if money is an object I would rather live in a tiki hut there than a mansion almost anywhere else.

After college, one of my friends did a pretty in-depth analysis of statistics dealing with income levels, cost of living, happiness, weather, number of rainy days, etc. to come up with the most ideal place to live in the US. He's now living in the bay area and absolutely loves it. I'm not sure what he does to offset the cost of living, but apparently he's doing ok since he's still living there.

Hmm, in the U.S. in addition to Hawaii , I would probably pick southern Virginia or North Carolina - not too bad in the winters and not too bad in the summers. I also loved the lack of humidity in Colorado, though I don't know about spending winters there! |

But I was still in Florida so I didn't lose everything. I'm picking Florida too. Grew up in Miami. Favorite place would be Islamorada in Florida Keys. Yes it is hot in the middle of the day in the summer - that is what A/C, pools, and siestas are for! There are no real beaches in the keys, it is more of a boating spot. In the keys, in the middle of summer you get the ocean breezes so you can sit outside in the evening - much different than the middle of the state. In order to live there, would need at leat 1/2 million to buy a house, and maybe another $30k for a nice boat. Would have to be retired since there is no work there (unless you are in the tourist industry). There are seasons in Florida. Winter is when you get to turn the AC off! |

In the US? I'm not really drawn to anywhere. At some point in my life, maybe when I retire, I'd like to move somewhere with fairly mild weather, with little or no snow. I HATE the cold and snow. Maybe North Carolina. I've visited my uncle there and it's nice. Mom lives in Florida. Too hot to live there year round, although sometimes I think I'd love to live in a small beach town on the gulf coast, even just for a year.
