Welts,
The only incident I remember at the moment happened in a bookstore. I was actually with a French Canadian and we were talking in English about what kind of cookbook I wanted to get and the clerk came up and started talking to us in French. It's been so long I don't recall a lot of the details I know that it made my friend mad. She told me after we left the store how she hated when people acted like that. I don't know of anything I did that she would have perceived as rude.
Shasta,
The mountains are pretty - but if I were going for view - I'd want to be overlooking water of some sort.

If I could live absolutely anywhere, I'd buy Alcatraz island, knock down the prison, and build a castle on it. We'd have to commute by boat to get into the city, but it would be pretty damn sweet.

I've enjoyed visits to Montreal, but i don't care for the French snobbery of some of the residents. I'm curious. What kind of snobbery did you encounter? The people who work in the service and tourist industries all speak English. Unless they think you're rude. Then they mysteriously forget how. They're rude in both French and English. And their driving sucks.

You've got quite the imagination! It's not as completely crazy as it sounds. They're talking about closing and selling some of our state parks now. Alcatraz is a tourist destination, but maintaining the rotting prison ain't cheap. It'll get mothballed at some point, and the underlying land is insanely valuable. Can you imagine what some rich weirdo would pay for that island?

I like to think that I could move anywhere I wanted, so I choose to stay here. I do love Phoenix. My husband and I say we would want to live in San Francisco, but I think that is vacation talk. If we had all the money in the world, we might make different choices because we could get the lifestyle we want in a larger, more densly populated city - which we would love. But moving on our income we would have to make sacrifices.
That said - if for some reason I was run out of Phoenix, I would move to Denver.

There are people who live on islands in the summer near me. Frankly, it sounds like a PITA to me. If it's pouring rain and windy and you have to make a grocery run, well, it sucks to be you.

Northern Florida has seasons. I love Florida and that is my first choice. I was a Navy brat and have lived out of the country and in many states but Florida and California would be my two choices. Out of the country - any where warm and tropical with lots of water.

There are assholes in every city in the world. Assholes are one thing, an entire country that looks down their nose at tourists is something else. I know you love your city/country and all, but Canadians are fairly rude to American tourists. Shit, I served with a fair number of Canadian military in Colorado and they're rude to Americans even when they're stationed here.

There is at least one asshole in every city I've ever been in. At least while I'm there.

The French are the rude ones! Of course they are. Last time I went to Mary Queen of the World Cathedral, the American tourists were there in shorts, hollering at the top of their lungs and yelling into cell phones. The priest had enough and tossed them out. However, if you want to insist that the French are the rude ones, be my guest.

I will say that a few Canadians are a little too quick to jump on peoples' backs before they have ALL the information. On that, I am out!
