DH and I joke that our comfort zone is Vancouver to Vancouver (WA to BC), though we'd totally live in Portland or Victoria. We love Seattle. If we left this are, itwould be for Half Moon Bay, CA or to live in the English countryside.

I haven't been all over the U.S. but I like where I currently live, a suburb of Portland, OR. DH hates the weather though. I like the seasons, the people, and the amenities. The SF Bay Area was too crowded, busy and intense for me. West Virginia is absolutely lovely but the humidity is awful. Our goal is to be able to travel enough that we can avoid the worst season wherever we choose to live when DH retires.

Waffle, I can speak to #4 on your list, I went to college there Pros - BEAUTIFUL area - mountains, rivers, you name it. It's very peaceful. The town has about 10,000 (though most people live on the outskirts) and it's 15 minutes from a city of 30,000 and 30 minutes from a city of 300,000. The weather is pretty much the same as the weather you have now, not sure if that's a plus or not. Cons - Some of the townspeople can be a little... not so progressive. The college itself is pretty liberal, but interracial couples, GLBT, etc. have run into some overt prejudice. I think that's pretty common for small towns in Appalachia. But if you want to just get a cabin with a good view, it's perfect!

I'd like to say (drum roll please) anywhere but NW Arkansas!!!!
Actually, I'd love to go back to Florida!!!! But, that isn't going to happen, so here I sit...surrounded by trees that cause awful allergies, feeling like I need to pack lunch & emergency kit just to drive 17 miles to the mall or 5 miles to a grocery store. A total tax bill that sometimes seems to rival the totals of our national debt.
If I knew I was going to hate it this much, I'd have just moved back to Nebraska and be close to our son and grandchildren. There's a benefit in that, but no benefit living here.
...Have I mentioned how much I hate this place?

I just took the "Find your spot" quiz. www.findyourspot.com/According to the quiz, I should move to one of the following locations: Alpine, TX Murray, KY Walla Wall, WA Berea, KY Woodbury, TN Bisbee, AZ Amarillo, TX Lubbock, TX Salisbury, NC Moab, UT Lima, OH Guthrie, OK Mitchell, SD Arrow Rock, MO Abilene, TX Oberlin, OH Hopkinsville, KY Lawrenceburg, KY New Harmony, IN Cedar Falls, IA Fredericksburg, TX Oxford, MS Hickory, NC Lansing, MI I'll have to do a bit of research on them and see if I think I would really like to live in any of them. I hate doing stuff like this online, only to find out at the end that you have to provide information about yourself to get the results. Pisses me off.

I'd eat too much if I was in a gray state like Oregon. Been there and did that.

I wouldn't pick ANY of the places on that list above. At first glance, that was my thought too. LOL I changed one answer on the quiz and got a different list. El Paso, TX Oklahoma City, OK Fort Worth, TX Nashville, TN Indianapolis, IN Amarillo, TX Lubbock, Tx Charlotte, NC Tucson, AZ Memphis, TN Cincinnati, OH Abilene, TX Norfolk, VA Dallas, TX Toledo, OH Austin, TX San Antonio, TX Greensboro, NC Lansing, MI Evansville, IN Columbus, OH St. Louis, MO Bowling Green, KY Lexington, KY Amarillo and Abilene TX were the only cities that were on both lists. I have an aunt who used to live in the Dallas area of Texas and loved it. I never thought I had any interest in living in TX. Maybe I only need to make a small move. I'm already very close to Cincinnati.

My older sister lived in Albuquerque, NM for a few years. I visited for a week, and I have to say it was very nice. Mild weather, nice elevation, no extreme weather patterns. And one of my younger sisters is currently living in Honolulu, HI. I am trying to get there before she moves again, but now I have to go to a wedding in St. Croix this December (I know, sucks right,) so Hawaii will have to get pushed to Spring '13.
I love where I live right now, in Queens, NY. There is just so much to do, eat, etc. within the area that I don't feel deprived yet. Maybe once my neighborhood finally drops under sea level I'll find a new spot.

In the U.S., I could easily live on the Oregon coast. Wouldn't all the rain and fog get to you? Live in the valley- it's an hour to the coast- an hour to the mountians and two to the desert. Best of everything. And less rain (than the coast) I'd eat too much if I was in a gray state like Oregon. Been there and did that No worries. Newcomers always melt in the rain- keeps you thin.

If we're limiting it to the United States, I'd have to say anywhere near an ocean -- along the lines of coastal Maine or coastal Connecticut, but not Cape Cod (way too much traffic) or Florida (I prefer 4 distinct seasons, too, LW). I don't need to be waterfront, although that would be nice. If money was no object, there is a home on Nantucket for sale now and the asking price is about $60 million (but it comes with about 60 acres of waterfront land which I would NEVER subdivide).
If the earth is the limit, then I'd probably choose the southwest coast of Ireland.

I love SE Virginia. Close to the ocean, seasonal change, lots to do, friendly people.
If money were no object, I'd choose Hawaii though and live on a beach.

I lived in Salem, Oregon. It used to be a nice and safe place to live. I have fond memories of growing up there. It has changed DRAMATICALLY and not for the better.

I'm pretty freaking happy in Marin County CA right now and don't have any reason to move.
I know I DON'T like New Jersey. I like the city of Chicago, but never lived there. (Grew up in the far northern suburbs.)
Madison WI seems awesome, at least downtown.

I grew up in Salem and still live in the valley. I completely agree with you. There are parts that are nice, and some that are down right scary.

This is a fairly frequent view from my property, though the number of lenticulars depends on the day and weather. More wind - more lenticular clouds. www.kevinlahey.com/mt8.shtmlThe only place I think would be better than living here is to live in AK.

The people who work in the service and tourist industries all speak English. Unless they think you're rude. Then they mysteriously forget how.
