Ok, I have decided that I can't live life on the wagon in order to do low-carb. I have started South Beach which allows red wine after the first two weeks, and from what I have read on-line the best is a dry, red wine.
Dry is defined as any wine with 1.4% or less of residual sugar. My beloved Red Cat has 7.5% of residual so it is most certainly not dry.
What are some good red wines? I've had supposed "good" wines many times and they all taste like vinegar to me.
Thanks!

Most red wines are dry. There are some late harvest zinfandels that are sweet, but they are hard to find. Some German red wines are sweet. Fortified wines and sparkling reds are often sweet
You'll be just fine with chianti, zinfandel, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, valpolicella, petit sirah, merlot. It's a matter of taste. Since you have a general impression of red wine tasting 'vinegary', I'd suggest you try something full bodied, like pinot noirs, esp. from Oregon.

Hmmm...I don't think you will like most Red Wines if you like Red Cat.
My favorits are Pinot Noir (can't remember the brand I liked), Layer Cake Malbec (no it doens't taste like cake), Seven Daughters Merlot, Black Opal Shiraz or Yellow Tail Shiraz.

If you can find it, the Black Swan Shiraz is fantastic too (I like it much better than the Yellow Tail one).

Angel, that's what I like - Shiraz and Pino Noir. I have Lindeman's right now but also like the Black Opal. You mentioned that to me once on FB and I had some.
Tina, I can't find the sugar amount on my bottles so I posted the site above.

Anything is going to be a dry red when compared to Red Cat! Technically, all red wines are dry, but Red Cat is made from the catawba grape, which produces a lot of blush wines. I would recommend pinot noir. It is a dry wine, but has a delicate taste. Or cote du rhone, which is a lighter tasting red wine. I drink a lot of cote du rhone and beaujolais in the summer. I also like bordeaux, tempranillo, rioja, granache, malbec, carmenere... I like wine! ETA: Friends of mine, who don't like red wine, discovered an Italian red they really like. It actually is pretty good, as I have a bottle of it at home. It's a montepulciano d'Abruzzo. The brand they like Cantina Zaccagnini, there is a wood stick attached to the bottle. This wine has softer tannins, which might make it more palatable for you.

Tina, Cellar No. 8 pinot noir is on sale right now. I had some the other night and I loved it. I went back to the state store today to pick up more, but my store was out of it (though they did have the zinfandel).

The key to enjoy a nice red wine is to cook a good steak to go with it.

Uh, oh. Where did Tina go? I hope she didn't have a melt down when she found out she can't have her Red Cat any more.

Bogle's ok. I like the St Francis Merlot but anything under $20/bottle for the little bottle is a good deal. Louis Martini cab's good too but kind of expensive.

March 1, 2009 Get saucy with Ménage à Trois Posted at 8:41 PM Folie à Deax Ménage à Trois Red (2007) Origin: California Price: $12
Ménage à Trois. Threesome. Alright, get your mind out of the gutter already!
So why the scandalous name? This wine is actually a blend of a three varietals -- zinfandel, merlot and cabernet sauvignon. The zinfandel gives it those juicy bursts of ripe fruit while the merlot creates that velvety smooth quality. Meanwhile the cabernet swoops in to add solid structure. To retain their own characteristics, each varietal is fermented separately and then blended afterward.
The finished product is a highly seductive potion. Fresh fruit notes overflow with luscious raspberries and blackberries, which are delightfully jammy on the finish. The rich yet soft tannins practically purr down your throat, and before you know it, you've surrendered to this tempting trio.

Ok, now I am googling the menage a trois red wine...heck, I just like the name of it. Looks like our crappy wine and spirits store carries it. But POM, you said you don't like dry wines....is it on the sweeter side?
