Haven't had one of those yet. What foods do the Malbecs pair with? I'm not much for pairing in general, but Malbec is the grape that's used in the majority of French Bordeaux. I'd say whatever you would typically pair a Bordeaux with would be fine. the wine-tasting dinner I went to recently had paired it with a hearty mushroom lasagna course. hope that helps.

Wow, you guys are making me want to start drinking my wine early today!
I drink red wine pretty much nightly....maybe mix in a few whites in the summer. I like dry wines and very much like REAL Zinfandel (agree with meg that white zinfandel is the devil and if anyone served it to me when I ordered a Zinfandel I would shank them). I especially like some of the "old vines" zinfandel varieties. Malbecs are also a favorites. Agree that maybe a Pinto Noir, slightly chilled, would be the best starting point for someone who wanted to switch from a really sweet wine. There are other sweeter dessert reds, but I'm thinking they might have the same sugar issues that the Red Cat has? I have never checked the sugar content on my wine! Do I need to do this? Not that I would stop drinking it, so maybe it doesn't matter.

Let's be clear: it's not white zinfandel. It's "white" zinfandel. I may not be the best at figuring out colors (shut up all of you!), but even I know the difference between pink and white/clear.

It's called white zin (or "white" zin) because it's processed like white wines, instead of red wines. Red wines get some color from the flesh of the grape, but most of the color comes from the skins, so they're fermented with the skins before they're pressed. White wines are pressed first, and then fermented. That's why "white" zin is actually pink, because it's made from the same red grape as a real zin.

When someone quotes one of your posts, changes something and then says "fixed" in their post, it means they're intentionally changing your statement to fit their view or to be funny (or both). This really shouldn't need an explanation.

Just keep in mind that each glass of wine tastes better than the one before! So if you can choke down that first glass, you're all good!

Yes, I got the joke, but I disagreed with the sentiment. That is why I re-fixed the fix. Some people actually like White Zinfandel and while I feel it is far inferior to Zinfandel, it has its uses. Yes, something smooth enough but not overly sweet so I can drink 4 bottles of wine in one night.

"Best cab I know costs about $120 a bottle, depending on year. Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Heitz Vineyards in northern California." I've always wanted to try that wine.

I can't choke down the first glass, let alone a bottle... I'll have to rethink my strategy when drinking wines....

Why is Martha's Vineyard Cabernet made in Northern CA? Martha's Vineyard is on Cape Cod in Mass. Vineyards are named for various reasons. In this case, its possible Martha is the wife of the founder of the Heitz Vineyards, but I'm guessing because I've forgotten the history. FYI, most wineries tend to name different parts of their land as different vineyards to distinguish between the different qualities of how the land influences the grapes.

I sometimes wonder how much underage drinking could be prevented by informing kids that alcohol is nothing but yeast urine?

Tina - can I ask why you keep starting what are probably unhealthy fad diets all the time?
You're skinny and in good shape. Don't go crazy, but eat and drink what you enjoy. Freaking out about every calorie you consume will just make you crazy and won't keep your weight at a healthy level in the long run (because all fad diets require that you stay on them, which nobody ever does).
