‘Reshoring’ boosted by Wal-Mart


The Wal-Mart Reshoring Initiative, announced in August 2013, pledged $250 billion over 10 years to supporting domestically produced goods. The goal was to restore America’s manufacturing industry, which has withered with globalization and outsourcing.

Deindustrialization refers to removal or reduction of industrial capacity in a country or area. For decades, U.S. manufacturers sourced more and more products from overseas, where labor and other costs were cheaper. The U.S. government wants to support reshoring, or bringing manufacturing back to the country, creating jobs.

After Wal-Mart announced of its initiative, Emilia Cosmetics moved its manufacturing from Israel to the U.S. Lonati, an Italy-based textile company, moved some manufacturing to the U.S.

As of July, 68 Wal-Mart suppliers have decided to take part in reshoring

I had to laugh because websites out there that pushed the idea of reshoring aside for the last 6 years are now all of a sudden saying this is real. Of course, the flip side of the coin is that all these people that believe Trump will be a disaster are now saying that manufacturing is gone for good.

Man, am I happy that I have been helping my young kids train for a future in robotics.

I am very leery of getting private industry into financing roads.  Pence and his predecessor did this

in Indiana, the Italian? based company went belly up and now I don't know what we have here. It

was in the news and then not.

Texas did similar and very soon thereafter one of the key Texas officials got a job with the company,

of course since he was a repub there was no payoff involved. Very big question was and is how much

will be done to maintain them.  Would rather they are tax payer supported and owned.

Look out for Trump, it likely will be some trump construction company, I imagine he will be a multi

billionaire by the time he is out of the presidency, he will get special interests of his involved in

everything since he doesn't want to separate out business. I trust him far as I could throw him.

I do hope jobs come back.  DH said some of the working conditions, safety, infrastructure, lack

of electric, water, and educated people, had to be a big problem.  He saw it daily when working

in 3rd world countries.

However Microsoft owner, name slips me at the moment was on a program the other day saying that

robotics more and more and will be displacing more.  So something will have to be done for all these

people to survive, said that needs to be worked on.  Likely a guaranteed allowance or something will

have to be implemented, how will that give people incentives to work and learn?

First, under the current system the taxpayer owns nothing and has seen government officials pile on billions and trillions in debt.

I'm not even going to address speculation about conflict of interest at this point...

As far as displaced workers due to robots are concerned, it's going to be very similar to what happened at the advent of the power loom and automobile; more opportunities, not less are coming. Honestly, nothing makes me sicker than titans of technology claiming that their industry is going to remove workers and force the government to pay for everyone to live.

An Archstone study revealed that 60% of offshoring decisions used only rudimentary cost calculations, typically just price or labor costs and ignored other costs such as freight, duty, carrying cost of inventory, delivery and impact on innovation. Most of the true risks and cost of offshoring were being ignored.

Now is a good time to re-evaluate the cost of domestic vs. offshore production, and not just because of the risk of an angry tweet from the president.
