A novel filtration material developed at the University of Saskatchewan as part of a PhD thesis may offer a green solution to contaminated oilsands process water.

Mohamed Hamid Mohamed's PhD thesis research placed among the top 12 national finalists honoured by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) at the 2011 Innovation Challenge Awards in Ottawa.

The awards honour graduate students who have demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit by identifying ways in which their research thesis results can be developed into products and processes to benefit Canadians.

Mohamed is investigating ways to remove corrosive acids from oilsands process water. His project, the only finalist project not already at the commercialization stage, was deemed by the judges to show great potential.

Crude oil contains naphthenic acids which lead to corrosion problems in oil refineries, so the oil must be washed and the waste water cannot be reused.

"During oilsands production, the industry uses a lot of water to wash the crude oil. As a result, naphthenic acids are introduced into the water," says Mohamed, now an NSERC Visiting Fellow with both the U of S and Environment Canada.

The contaminated water is collected and stored in large tailing ponds, unable to be safely returned to the environment.

Working at Environment Canada's Hydrology Research Centre in collaboration with the U of S chemistry department, Mohamed is using materials science to help decontaminate oilsands process water.

"This work represents a major contribution to oilsands research," says assistant chemistry professor Lee Wilson, who is Mohammed's co-supervisor.

Once the federal government determines standards for cleaning and returning the water to the environment, oil producers will be looking for an efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly method of purifying the water used to wash crude oil, he says.

Mohamed found that molecules of a naturally occurring sugar, cyclodextrin, can be linked together to create a polymer that extracts naphthenic acids from water.

Other methods being researched have limitations related to their cost and effectiveness. Also, some methods break down the naphthenic acids into unknown compounds, which may lead to further toxicity problems.

By contrast, Mohamed's method captures the naphthenic acids, removing them from the water. In addition, cyclodextrin is an environmentally friendly solution to a serious environmental concern.

The cyclodextrin-based polymers function like other types of water filtration system, such as charcoal filters, but the polymers display remarkable binding behaviour.

While inexpensive charcoal has been used for hundreds of years to clean water, studies have shown that once the pollutant is trapped, it leaches from the charcoal.

"Our material shows high binding, which solves the problem of leaching," Mohamed says. "It is also easy to reuse our materials."

The problem Mohamed had to overcome is that cyclodextrin is soluble in water. He made it insoluble by polymerizing the coneshaped molecules, which are then modified to target naphthenic acids in a process Mohamed likens to tuning a dial on a radio to find the right station.

He was inspired to pursue this research by its potential to help people in his home country, Kenya, where water purification is a serious concern. He believes he will be able to bring the Saskatchewan research back to Kenya where it will provide other water purification solutions.

"This research can be used to purify any contaminant that is in water," Mohamed says. "You just have to tune the material to target a particular impurity."

His next step is to continue his research to find a more efficient material. The long-term goal is to develop the project for large-scale operations in the field once reclamation of oilsands process water gets underway.

It's been a little while, however, that's the best part about this trend. It's long term. The best part about this report is that the second half of the equation is staring to show up. Some people might call it Dollar devaluation, however, it's more like Yuan appreciation. We are seeing how it's having just as much of an effect as the rising wages in driving jobs back to their own economies, just like the Yen and WON in the 90's. I want to take some time to focus on GE and how they are showing that Liberal Capitalism is on its way. By investing in education, aka, teaching (Thanks JC) they are making sure that the workforce is going to have the skills to work in the manufacturing faculties that they are building here for new and re shored products. Which is good because things like water scientist are going to be in high demand as the Oil and NG patch really start to grow.

GE along with CHK have started in invest in the necessary infrastructure that NA will need to switch to oil Independence, on top of all that GE is hiring 5,000 vets. I know that some might not be the biggest fan of GE, however, these are the kinds of actions that are going to push us forward in to the next phase of civilization.

The other great thing that is starting to show up in the trends is how every economy is starting to experience a re birth in manufacturing. We are moving towards servicing our own economies every day now because China is focused on Happiness not GDP( Thanks JC )

This has been confirmed with their recent announcment of a 7.5% targeted growth rate. In the UK they are filming a reality TV show to prove that even garments can be products in the west again, and in Japan the Nikkei is warning Companies that manufacturing also needs to move abroad to survive; this has promted Nissan to open a plant in the UK to go along with the ones in the USA.

More furniture manufacturing in the USA, not re shored, but smart enough to keep their standards. So they are keeping their manufacturing where they know it will be in good hands and have good quality when finished(USA). More USA food production is evident in the example of a small start up company expanding their manufacturing space by 500% after their sixth year in business, they are now in Detroit; where there is job growth in IT as well.

The last point I want to make is how it's not just one person or monarchy that is going to be a part of the solution it's everyone, a guy like Bill Gates donating money to help farming in Africa is just another example of the new age upon us.(Thanks JC )

Read The next 100 years by George Friedman. Gives very reasonable arguments why the U S will dominate the next 100 years. Interestingly enough he hypothesizes that Japan and Turkey are the next powerhouses to rival the US, with Mexico also gaining status. He says china is overrated and will fade and be dominated by Japan.

I hear ya wxyz. I could see Turkey up there. Russia once Putin is gone will be interesting. But I like how right now Qatar, or something like that, is apparently the richest place on earth. Yeah, right, only citizen that have millions of dollars are counted there. Like in Dubai. The average wage is like $15 mil, but that doesn't count all the slaves living in huts 2 miles from the emperor's towers that cost 5-6k a night to stay in.

Morris, welcome, . I agree, I could see Turkey gaining power that is for sure. The Saudis and the Turks, that's going to be interesting to see play out. Japan, IDK, they have tons of debt. I agree that the USA will lead the way again, but if I were Japan I would shitting my pants over what happened in the early 1900's.

Lack of natural resources and the major advances in technology to lay claim to near space will push Japan forward the next 100 years and put it constant tension with the US. Very good book, read it!

I hear ya wxyz, LOL, the world has always been a screwed up place. At least we have facilitated a place that the little people can make it and from what I can see up here, both sides of the political spectrum (people wise) are sick of Govt spending in the USA; and that is a good thing.

People like to compare the USA's debt issues to Europe. The only problem is that SS is only 50% replacement in USA/NA and it was 70%+ in Europe. I point this out because it just shows the fundamental difference between the Europeans(Not All) and NA and why we are not a broken system like the one we originated from, but a better system that we can build on. The next phase here is getting back to our roots and focusing on using business to grow and not government and that truly is the best thing about the Freedom the Illuminati brought with the American Revolution; we can pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, start all over again.

There is evidence that the wage increases in China, are starting to ripple thought the rest of Asia, making even more cost effective for everyone to service their own economies. More plastic companies are reshoing and many more industries plan to follow suit. Companies are planning on investing in infrastructure and Apple is opening a new research facility in Texas.

Betting on the decline of NA and the USA in particular, is as bad of a call now, as it has ever been.

One thing that has been highlight over and over in this thread is the idea of Liberal Capitalism and how this trend has been slowing emerging over the last few years as dissatisfaction with the current setup intensifies. We have discussed the reason for this trend to emerge, as it is part of the cycled that was started during the Industrial revolution before BIG govt spending that kick off in the forties.

Without a sold base, industrialists had no customers. The socialist programs that grew during the 60’s and 70’s had a positive effect on our social setup, but had noting but a negative effect on our budget. Paul Warburg argued in 1935 that using the money for the new deal in the way the FDR was suggesting would do noting but BOND the people to a massive debt (Another point on the board for Mr. Warburg). However, due to the polices of the time Mr. Warburg was ignored and instead of recapitalizing the banks, a chain of deficit financing was put into motion that has lead us to where we are today. Lots see that the debt situation at the National level is unsustainable and the fact is that if the Industrialists don’t go back to what they were doing before Big govt, their empires will collapse. Lots think that is exactly what is going to happen next because it’s part of conspiracy to enslave us, however, the facts tell an entirely different story than that.

In February, GE Appliances announced it was opening a water heater plant at Appliance Park in Louisville, Ky., the first new plant at the site in more than 50 years. Eventually, GE plans to invest $800 million in Louisville, part of a $1 billion commitment to create 1,300 new jobs in the U.S. by 2014. Many of those jobs are being shifted from a water heater plant in China. In addition to standard manufacturing jobs, GE says the new facility will create “hundreds of highly skilled salaried jobs in fields like engineering, industrial design and manufacturing.”

For Sirkin, though, the trend seems clear. “I think we’re still in the early stages. You see big companies like National Cash Register — NCR — that was manufacturing their ATMs in China for the U.S. and is now manufacturing in Columbus, Ga. You see Ford adding jobs into its plants. I think they committed to 12,000 jobs …. It’s also smaller companies. So Farouk Systems, which makes hair dryers, has moved 1,500 jobs back from China to the U.S. You see Coleman, the manufacturer of water coolers, starting to build water coolers in the U.S. ….”
