Well ModE just did some digging.. Your 110% right! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_burial Ty, apparently the only reason we don't sent it to space is cost to launch it there. If space flight become commercialized, it will happen for sure.

The problem I see with the spent fuel rods is .... not every launch goes off perfectly .... what would happen if the rocket & capsule blew up on the pad or a minute or two after launch .... it could get to be a catastrophe of some sort within a given area. Just a thought.

What would be wrong with dumping spent fuel rods in an active volcano? It seems to me to be a perfect way of getting rid of them. Find an active volcano on a remote island and start dumping them.

IDK how they would react to the magma, there could be issues with eruption.
I agree ModE, that is another good point. There has to be someone besides NASA that can pull off launches consistently before it would go ahead. I would set that up away form everyone. You would have the rods encased in something solid in the rocket as a fail safe as well, IMO.

Guess one of the most remote and desolate places to develop space launch for spent fuel rods would be Easter Island in southern Pacific ocean. If something went wrong with a launch the stuff would drop into the ocean and sink... far from any populated area. The few remaining people on the island would get a boost to their economy, which I understand is hardly anything. Just an idea....

That would work for sure. There is also the Dubai route, we could just build a big island somewhere to ship it off of..

re: Spent fuel rods.
Spent fuel rods can be reprocessed several times and I don't think the costs are very high to do so. It is just a matter of no "will" to do so. I still believe nuclear is the only green energy solution going forward but I seem to be in the minority on this item. Screw solar and wind .... build nuclear.

I think people like to dream of Wind & Solar being the answer but until there is a radical breakthrough ( Mainly on Battery Storage) Nuclear is our best bet for near term future. We should be biding Hundreds of these plants in the US. There is no reason why we couldn't get nearly 100% of our power from Nuclear Reactors.

Yes, wind, solar, tidal flows, etc. all have limited use. Perhaps efficiencies in power storage can help a bit, but that too would have limits.

The United States has blown a great opportunity with the Moon. By now the US should have been mining that rock for all it's worth!

IDK if I would say that the opportunity has been blown. I think that space flight might have been a little bit to much a head of it time, we are just finally catching up.. I have to say I'm temped to buy some land on the moon, especially now that they are telling us there are useful mineral up there.

I wouldn't say we are doing nothing. A new nuclear powered ship just went there. 20 to 30 yrs ago the idea of going to mars was a pipe dream. If you would have told someone in 1940 that we were going to the moon they would have locked you up. The human adventure has just begun!

It'll only add to real global GDP when they start actually returning with stuff, right?
