Zero chance Ontario will meet its 2020 electric car target, analysts say

The Liberal government has been encouraging electric vehicle sales by doling out $75 million in rebates to vehicle owners, offering various other incentives and programs, installing a network of charging stations and spending $1 million to open an electric vehicle education centre.

But that so far hasn’t translated into vast numbers of vehicles. The official data for 2017 isn’t yet available, but at the end of last year, electric vehicles represented less than one per cent of all passenger vehicle sales in Ontario.

In just two years, by 2020, the government hopes to see that number increase to five per cent.

It can’t be done, analysts say.

Greyrock to construct gas-to-liquids plant

The plant will use natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGL) as feedstocks. Products produced will include a synthetic diesel fuel and naphtha. The diesel fuel is a premium product that has ultra-high cetane, zero sulfur, and good lubricity. In addition, the liquid fuel products produced are clean burning and can be used in existing diesel engines.

"Greyrock congratulates the Rocky Mountain GTL team on completing their fundraise and kicking off construction of the plant," said Robert Schuetzle, CEO of Greyrock. "Production of synthetic fuel products from alternative resources, including natural gas, NGLs, flare gas, CO2, biomass and other resources is the important step in the evolution of petroleum based fuels to fuels that are cleaner burning and with an improved carbon footprint."

A recent study by Greyrock and partners concluded that particulate matter (PM) emissions from vehicles could be reduced by approximately 19% by simply blending 20% synthetic diesel with currently available diesel. This improvement can be accomplished with no changes to the current vehicle fleet, no material changes to infrastructure and no involvement by the consumer. Other benefits from a 20% fuel blend include reductions in carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and methane (CH4) emissions by a projected 24%, 5.5%, and 11%, respectively.

Disrupting the internal combustion engine — from within

BEVs have become a symbol of innovation, promising to disrupt the automotive industry. Yet hidden in plain sight are some of the most disruptive technologies the industry has ever seen; and they happen to be new and improved internal combustion engines.

Ironically, as countries announce plans to phase out gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles in favor of BEVs, new fuels and engine designs are making ICEs greener than ever, and far more efficient. In fact, in many of the world's largest markets, on a cradle-to-grave basis, the most efficient ICE has a significantly lower carbon footprint than a BEV — mainly due to the carbon intensity of the electrical power grid and the environmental impact of battery manufacturing.....

...Some of the most exciting developments are radically new engine designs which save fuel and reduce emissions, like the Achates Power opposed-piston engine. The engine, which utilizes two pistons per cylinder working in opposite reciprocating motion, has the potential to achieve efficiencies exceeding those of diesel and gasoline engines by 30 and 50 percent, respectively.

Electrification can complement ICE to achieve the highest vehicle efficiency, bringing together the strengths of both technologies. Hybrids have demonstrated that ICEs, when paired with batteries, can run at peak efficiency.

In addition to making engines more efficient, we can trap emissions before they are released into the atmosphere. Saudi Aramco has already demonstrated the on-board capture and storage of 30 percent of the tail-pipe CO2 from a Toyota Camry.

Combining CO2 capture with ever more-affordable renewable energy, and using proven synthetic fuel technologies, carbon-neutral combustion is already within reach.

There’s a Better Answer Than Electric Cars

At Keith’s prices, investing in CO2 capture can be a better idea both for consumers and for the environment than car electrification. According to the International Energy Agency, increasing the number of electric cars on the road from the current 2 million to 280 million by 2040 will only displace 1 percent of the expected global CO2 emissions, largely because other demand for carbon-based energy, including from planes and ships, will push emissions up – and because electricity to power the giant electric vehicle fleet won’t come entirely from clean sources. To achieve this unimpressive result, carmakers have already pledged some $90 billion in EV investment, and that’s not counting the cost of the ubiquitous infrastructure necessary to give EVs mass appeal, the investment needed to expand power generation and network capacity and the government subsidies to electric car buyers.

Of course, too many Americans and the mass media talking today don't realize that even under President Obama's CPP "increasing the operational efficiency of existing coal-fired steam EGUs" (electric generating units) was picked first of the "four building blocks" that his administration's CO2 reduction program was built upon. It's no wonder that in 300 pages listed on the Federal Register, President Obama's CPP mentioned "efficiency" 94 times and "efficient" 42 times....

..Coal is nowhere near "dying."

Globally, the "environmental group" Carbon Brief itself tracks some 200,000 MW of new coal-fired power plants currently being built and another 450,000 MW being planned. That's a 30-35% expansion coming for the world's coal fleet, right when the anti-coal business is trying to convince you the exact opposite of this reality. As directly related, the World Energy Council therefore nails the imperative of higher coal efficiency in particular:

“With the ever-increasing demand for coal, particularly in the developing world, the use of low emission coal technologies becomes increasingly important…The two principal avenues for reducing carbon emissions from coal-fired power generation are through use of high efficiency, low emission power plants and carbon capture, use and storage,” World Energy Council

Even here in the already developed U.S., coal's future could easily be brighter than advertised. For example, the recent cancellation of American Electric Power's Wind Catcher project, a $4.5 billion, 2,000 MW planned wind farm in Oklahoma and Texas, demonstrates how the wind and solar power option might not limitlessly grow like some want you to believe.

Beside the fact that these renewables are naturally intermittent, i.e., "more unavailable than available," their other most ignored problem is about the fading of their "sweet spots." For example, as we continue to utilize the best locations for wind and solar to thrive (eating up the "sweet spots"), their new builds and next delivered power become increasingly more challenging. With our wind farms overwhelmingly located in the windy Midwest, and solar leader California far sunnier than other states, we could easily start to see new wind and solar flattening out in the 2020s.

And it becomes clearer why Mr. Armstrong's computer models have been much more accurate than climate models such as the ones used in the propaganda film "An Inconvenient Truth", or the failed hockey stick graph that was used to fear monger for years.

Independent Audit Exposes the Fraud in Global Warming Data

The audit has revealed “that climate models have been tuned to match incorrect data, which would render incorrect their predictions of future temperatures and estimates of the human influence of temperatures.” Furthermore, the Paris Climate Agreement adopted 1850-1899 averages as “indicative” of pre-industrial temperatures is “fatally flawed.” The entire Paris Climate Agreement has an agenda to eliminate effectively the advancement of society and attempt to reset the clock to the pre-Industrial Revolution. This entire theory that before the Industrial Revolution, our planet’s atmosphere was somehow pristine and uncontaminated by human-made pollutants has been also proven to be completely bogus.
Bubbles trapped in Greenland’s ice has revealed that we began emitting greenhouse gases at least 2,000 years ago. The Romans even constructed the first aqueduct was built in 312 BC because there was a serious problem with water pollution. Seneca (c 4BC-65AD), the adviser to Nero, wrote in 61AD: “No sooner had I left behind the oppressive atmosphere of the city [Rome] and that reek of smoking cookers which pour out, along with clouds of ashes, all the poisonous fumes they’ve accumulated in their interiors whenever they’re started up, then I noticed the change in my condition.”....

..Anomalies it has identified include at St Kitts in the Caribbean, the average temperature for December 1981 was zero degrees, normally it’s 26C. For three months in 1978, one place in Colombia reported an 82 degrees Celsius average – hotter than the hottest day on Earth. Then in Romania, one September the average temperature was reported as minus 46°C, which has never happened. The data showed that supposedly ships would report ocean temperatures from places up to 100km inland. The paper also points out that the most serious flaws identified was the shortage of data. For the first two years, from 1850 onwards, the only land-based reporting station in the Southern Hemisphere was in Indonesia. Then there were ship observations at the time but Australian records had not started until 1855 in Melbourne, behind Auckland which started in 1853. This data appears to have been just made up.
