[social_buttons] Scania (part of Volkswagen) builds modified, heavy-duty diesel engines designed to run on almost pure ethanol (E95, or 95% ethanol, with a 5% ignition improver).

If that sounds weird, that’s because it is. US auto manufacturers make a big deal out of converting cars and trucks to run on ethanol/gasoline blends of up to 85% ethanol. Scania has done better than that for 15 years, and guess what, their engines can run on 100% biodiesel too, without any modification.

Scania’s compression-ignition (CI) ethanol engine is a modified 9-liter diesel with a few modifications. Scania raised the compression ratio from 18:1 to 28:1, added larger fuel injection nozzles, and altered the injection timing. The fuel system also needs different gaskets and filters, and a larger fuel tank since the engine burns 65% to 70% more ethanol than diesel (whoa! see below). The thermal efficiency of the engine is comparable to a diesel, 43% compared to 44%.

While Scania originally introduced this technology for “heavy commercial vehicles in urban operation” (city buses), they’re now extending it to trucks as well. Scania maintains that with existing technology, the transition to renewable fuels can be painless. Since in the last 15 years they’ve put 600 ethanol buses on the road (mostly in Sweden), the company seems to know what it’s talking about.

Scania is also working to develop ethanol refueling infrastructure, which should make it easier for smaller transport companies to invest in ethanol-powered vehicles.

But why not use biodiesel, since ethanol requires about 1.5x more fuel usage? Scania’s answer may raise a few eyebrows: “the farming capacity [for biodiesel] is insufficient for the huge need foreseen for the transport industry.”

Unless you take EU spokesman Michael Mann’s comments seriously (he said that Europe can grow enough fuel to meet 10% of it’s transportation fuel), Scania must be betting on cellulosic ethanol. The intensifying food vs. fuel debate isn’t taking this issue lightly, as I’ve written about here and here.

In any case, Scania’s work seems to indicate it might not be as hard to create engines that run on alternative fuels as auto manufacturers maintain.

ISIS Grows International Footprint

Within the last month, an ISIS branch in Tripoli has launched an assault against foreign nationals at the Corinthia hotel in the Libyan capital; former Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants have announced the creation of a province in the historical region of Khorasan along the Afghan-Pakistani border; and at least 30 people were killed in the northern Sinai Peninsula in a car bomb and mortar attack carried out by the renamed IS-affiliated group ‘Sinai Province’.

In addition to these attacks, ISIS affiliates have sprung up in North Africa and South Asia. Soldiers of the Caliphate in Algeria, Sons of the Call for Tawhid and Jihad in Jordan and Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines have all pledged allegiance to the terror group while IS-linked terror cells have been foiled in Belgium, Morocco, Israel and the occupied West Bank.

Ironic? As clearly demonstrated by the map above the airstrikes have done nothing to halt the I.S. in Syria; but now - Iraqi airbase used by Marines attacked after Islamic State takes over nearby town. In other words, airstrikes are doing nothing in Iraq either.

Even more precarious, the UN is saying that Yemen is 'collapsing'.... and Jordan has started to move troops to the boarder with Syria.

But my worms are hungry!!!!! Yes they love the cast from beer making esp. 3 row barley!!! With global warming we grow grapes for wine.  Well the worm pits will be planted with regent next year.  Regent is a red wine vine from Germany that makes an organic wine near in very cold German vineyards. 

Now go to the future, Purple Passion Potato patch over the leaf little( around the paper slurry) is looking better now the compost is a year older!!

The day after the mujahideen attacks in Copenhagen, Denmark the largest carnival parade of the season in Northern Germany was cancel due to threats made by mujahedeen supporters. Earlier this month tens of thousand of Muslims flooded Downing St to hand in a petition sign by more than 100k Muslims calling for a limit to free speech. After more than a dozen innocent people haven been murdered in free countries around the globe over the last six months, the biggest out cry from the Muslim communities in the west mirror those in Pakistan, Iran, and many other Muslim countries - which is to call for further limits to the "western" way of life.

The evidence is more than clear now that the desire to have an "Islamic State" rule the world isn't just the goal of a small minority of Muslims. Too bad for them that Mohammad is - in fact - a false prophet and Islam is going to collapse as the Eastern hemisphere sans Australia does.

Yemen is just another case and point of this fact. Aside from the US, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey have now closed their embassies there, and the Iranian backed rebels have sized more government buildings in another town; while the Arabs call for the UN to intervene. We thought Libya looked bad.. er was that Iraq? No Syria. No Afghanistan.. No the Ukraine, where pro Russian rebels have now apparently sized a rail hub.

Hezbollah deputy warns of impeding terrorist battle

The Lebanese Army is facing an imminent terrorist battle, Hezbollah deputy chief Sheikh Naim Qassem said Thursday, after the Army waged pre-emptive attacks on militant positions along the border with Syria.

Qassem warned that Syria-based jihadi groups were gearing up for a major offensive deep into Lebanese territory when the winter ends next month.

“Lebanon must study its options well because this project targets all of Lebanon,” he added.

In its pre-emptive offensive Thursday dawn, the Army pushed out jihadi militants from two hilltop positions, seizing explosives and unexploded projectiles.

Most of the militants, believed to be affiliated with ISIS, apparently retreated after the offensive, which was backed by artillery bombardment.

Hours after the operation, an officer and four troops suffered light to moderate wounds when a rocket fired by militants crashed near their vehicle on the outskirts of the northeastern border town of Ras Baalbek.

The "government" in Libya has "closed" the 11 oil fields in the center of the country. So much for cutting off the Islamic States oil revenues. It would appear that the lightning advance that was apparently stopped by all this bombing has moved to a different area.

Israeli army monitoring group allied with Islamic State in Sinai

Kurdish fighters on Thursday held off a fierce assault by the Islamic State group on the strategic border town of Ras al-Ain in northeast Syria, a monitoring group said.

But the jihadists advanced against the Kurdish militia around Tal Tamr, another key town on the same front line in Syria's Hasakeh province.

IS launched a major offensive Wednesday to try to capture Ras al-Ain, which has a border crossing with Ceylanpinar in Turkey.

The jihadists want to seize the town, as well as Tal Tamr, to control key routes that link to their Iraqi bastion of Mosul farther east.

"The Islamic State took over the village of Tal Nasri, so they are now only 500 meters (yards) from Tal Tamr," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
