New Democrats don't like to be called socialists. They roll their eyes and sigh theatrically, but they can't deny it. Their own constitution describes them as such. It's right there in black and white and pinko.

To distance itself from the bad odour of socialism, the federal NDP has been hiding its constitution. It is the only major party that does not have its constitution posted on its website.......

..........The hypocrisy here is almost breathtaking. New Democrats continually accuse the governing Conservatives of having a hidden agenda, while their own constitution remains locked away in Jack Layton's office safe.

It is for good reason that New Democrats keep their constitution out of sight. Otherwise, it would alarm voters. Among other things, it rejects private property and free markets in favour of government control over the economy. We all have seen how well that worked elsewhere. That's why socialists are in bad odour.

Now, New Democrats are working on a constitution they don't have to keep hidden. The party at its national convention in Vancouver this weekend will consider a motion to officially abandon its quest for a socialist utopia. If the motion is approved, as it likely will be, any mention of socialism will be expunged from the party constitution.

Mere housekeeping, party officials insist, but really, this would be a historic abandonment by the party of what once was its central pillar. Socialism defined the NDP. It was to pursue socialism that the party was created.

New Democrats are now ready to abandon the cause that animated their party's founders. It's as if the Parti Quebecois voted to reject separatism and then pretended it was no big deal.

But it is a big deal, at least superficially. If the NDP moves ahead with this, this country for the first time in more than 75 years will not have an avowedly socialist party on the federal scene..

Dmitry Medvedev has set out a strong pro-reform economic manifesto, calling for an end to state dominance over Russia’s economy and accelerated privatisations, including selling controlling stakes in big companies.

In a speech observers said resembled a platform for a re-election bid, the Russian president warned that the country could face stagnation if it did not curb excessive state interference in the economy and boost private investment. This was the only way to ensure the Russian economy was competitive, he said.

“We need to get out of old habits. It is not right to rely only on stable, gradual growth. Behind this notorious stability could lie the next stagnation,” Mr Medvedev told an auditorium packed with global and Russian business leaders at the annual St Petersburg economic forum.

The term “stagnation” is evocative for Russians, a reference to the Leonid Brezhnev era in the 1970s when Soviet economic growth stalled.

The potential of strengthening the state’s role in the economy had been “exhausted”, Mr Medvedev said. “We are not building state capitalism,” he said.

The comments appeared a direct jab at the policies of Vladimir Putin, his predecessor who is now prime minister but still operates as Russia’s paramount leader after tightening the state’s grip over the economy during his two presidential terms. Neither man has ruled out running for president in elections next year.

Mr Medvedev said the domination of state-controlled companies had led to “low entrepreneurial and investment activity” which was threatening the loss of the Russian economy’s competitiveness.

“Such an economic model poses a danger for the country’s future. This is not my choice,” Mr Medvedev said. “My choice is different. Private entrepreneurship and private investment should dominate the Russian economy.”

It's gotten to the point where I'm actively looking for alternatives. I think I'll be out of here entirely in a couple of years."

He is not alone. In what is supposed to be a land of unlimited cheap labor — a nation of 1.3 billion people, whose extraordinary 20-year economic rise has been built first and foremost on the backs of low-priced workers — the game has changed. In the past decade, according to Helen Qiao, chief economist for Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong, real wages for manufacturing workers in China have grown nearly 12% per year. That's the result of an economy that's been growing by double digits annually for two decades, fueled domestically by a frenzied infrastructure and housing build-out — one that, for now anyway, continues apace — combined with what was for a time an almost unquenchable thirst for Chinese exports in the developed world. Add to that the fact that in the five largest manufacturing provinces, the Chinese government — worried about an ever widening gap between rich and poor — has raised the minimum wage 14% to 21% in the past year. To Harley Seyedin, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in South China, the conclusion is inescapable: "The era of cheap labor in China is over."...........

..............And according to a recent study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), there is already evidence of at least the beginning of a shift in manufacturing operations returning to the U.S. Last year, Wham-O, the company that makes inexpensive, albeit iconic, toys, announced it was moving 50% of its Frisbee and Hula Hoop production back to the U.S. from China and Mexico, a move that created hundreds of new American jobs.

In a survey eight years ago, the American Chamber of Commerce in South China found that 75% of its members were focused mainly on export markets. By last year, that number had flipped: 75% of 1,800 respondents now say their manufacturing operations in China are focused on serving the Chinese market. That's mainly because China's workers are steadily getting richer. For them, and pretty much everyone else concerned, that's the rarest of commodities in a troubled global economy: good news.
