Hello! Is it too late to join for the year? I used to be on WIRR-west about 3 or 4 years ago. Made it through some financial disasters and just managed to finally get a loan modification. (Please don't hate me, I feel terrible accepting the loan modification but it was that or walk away)
I want to take advantage of having my debt paid off and a the little extra in my pocket every month with the loan modification and funnel that to savings. I had a few hundred dollars saved up, but my DS had to have some dental work. His deadbeat dad that led to my financial troubles couldn't pay for anything so I had to exhaust my savings. I'm almost embarrassed to post my current savings. (This doesn't include retirement or kids' college funds)
P8nt 03/02/2012 (3/2/12 $1.25 Current: $1.25)
Is my initial post correct? Does anyone have advice on setting up the table? I will have at least 3 sub savings accounts that I'd like to fund.

Welcome p8nt! No, it's not too late to join - in fact, it's never too late. Thanks for your bio, it probably took a bit of courage on your part to let us in on your financial history. In our little community here there just might be people with a similar history so I really don't think you'll find anyone who will 'hate' you for doing what you thought was best.
I'd be happy to e-mail you a copy of the excel spreadsheet I use so you can modify it. Just send me a PM with your e-mail and I'll forward it to you tomorrow.

I decided that when I reach my savings goal I'm going to buy a coffee machine. I love the ones that make individual cups of coffee, tea, cocoa, etc. DH said to me," You do realize when you get your savings goal that you can't just go out and buy the coffee machine, you will have to save up for it." He's so funny! Of course I knew that .

No, I haven't only gone up $100. My savings took a hit when I had some heavy serious car repairs. I now need to save $1100 each month to hit my goal of 20k by the end of the year. Happy saving!

Slow and steady right now. I have to pay off the rest of my vacation before the big savings can take place. I know I won't be able to meet my Roth 2011 goal but the 2012 goal shouldn't be an issue....I hope! I'm on financial lockdown right now so that should help!

Thanks for the welcome back! Nice to be back It seems that we might have located a house ... just have to see if the whole buying process works out. There are a couple of other interested parties, so lets see if we "win" the house. Otherwise, savings is absolutely on track. And I just heard that my raise for this year should be around 5% - sweet! here is my tagline: Ntrick 1/3/12 9035 (1/1/12 0.00)

We received our tax refund and put some away. We also paid for a bathroom update and adjusted our with holdings for next year so we have a little more cash flow throughout the year. Too bad I think we need it for living expenses and not extra savings. Part if it will go towards our budget for medical/auto, which I don't track here since we spend it continuously!

murphath 3/3/12 $748 (2/10/11 $22)
So, I added another $46. I'm expecting some rebate checks and hope they arrive in March so I can add those. My Disney dollars are up to $208 for a total of $956 toward graduation/Disneyland trip. Since DS attends school in SoCal and his girlfriend is from SoCal, I can buy a 2 day pass for $99 each for them. That will save me $82 off the discounted tickets I'll get for the rest of us (DD's friend works at D'land). Since my savings is @ $50 month, that $82 reps almost 2 months! Yeah!

Becoming emergency foster parents for 5 nights caused a bit of our monthly discretionary spending to evaporate. (Teenagers eat A LOT!) I'm a little nervous about the upcoming utility bill as well, but, in the grand scheme of life, it's only money.

DD's optometrist does not run his practice well. I have gotten the run around every time I go to the counter to pay. After the last visit, I went online to see how this dr. was rated. I read that other patients are very unhappy about the exact same thing. I may take DD's test results and visit another optometrist closer to our area. So far we have spent $1000 on just the tests. I read in the reviews of our current optometrist that buying glasses from him are really expensive. I want good care for my girl, so this is a heavy decision. She has 20/200 vision in her weak eye, and we are hoping that vision therapy can improve her acuity. A big blessing last month is that we got our kitchen and entry way tiled. This was part of the home repair category above. It was not great timing for us financially, but it is done now, and I am very grateful. The flooring was really bad, and I had been wanting to replace it for years. I think I will still need to keep the $5000 goal to someday hopefully put hardwoods in the rest of the house, however. Thank you to everyone for being here! I really appreciate the comradery!

Oooh, fresh, I'm really jealous of your new kitchen floor! A new kitchen floor is on my 2-year wish list. I hope. Our current kitchen flooring is industrial-grade carpet from the (gasp) '80s.

So, I see I didn't enter a goal. And thank you S4N for the spreadsheet. Hopefully this works. I transferred $5 to my savings just to feel like I made some progress. How often can I update? Just to clarify, I am not even engaged - so saving for a wedding will be my lowest priority. I may never earmark a cent for that account. P8nt, Anything is better than nothing. I am happy that you have found the additional 5 bucks to add in! Good work! Have you thought about an automatic savings plan? That's when the bank moves your money for you automatically, one less thing to worry about - even if it is 5 dollars a month! Good luck! You're doing great!

That's when the bank moves your money for you automatically, one less thing to worry about - even if it is 5 dollars a month! Good luck! You're doing great! Thanks! I had been having $25 a paycheck go automatically to my ING account. But I found I was always having to move it back to my checking for expenses. Maybe someone can tell me if they have ever used this tactic and offer suggestions. Since my budget has change is new and I'm not sure exactly how much extra I will have, I though about doing it this way. Every payday I am going to subtract $100 from my checking account balance, but not actually transfer it. Then I'll leave it there for 2 weeks until I get paid again. If I don't dip into it (for true NEEDS, not wants), then I'll transfer it and start over again for the next 2 weeks. Also, I've been getting by without any child support so if by some miracle he actually starts paying something, I plan on diverting that right back into savings. I finally went to child support services for help, so even if I don't collect it for 20 years, it will be sitting on the books earning interest. Eventually I will get something.

p8nt: I love your idea of subtracting $100 from each paycheck and keeping it until next paycheck. A few times of doing this and you will know how much you can automatically put into savings. Great idea! I"m looking forward to seeing how much you will be able to transfer into savings

Welcome, onmyway! Your tagline looks good, we know what you mean. p8nt, your idea sounds great! Here is hoping that your child support issues get worked out soon as well. My table is back working, and I added a little bit more from our state tax returns, woo! Still wating on federal. Please don't judge when you see how much it is. I can probably reach my goal when our federal returns come in. I've been begging Big Sarge for years to adjust his witholding, but no dice. And Big Army has changed our move date. Mr. Cat is home from Australia and I have decided to take the $1,600 that I have saved + an additional $400 and transfer $2,000 to the "car loan" savings account. So, I am accomplishing part of a goal and starting over at the same time. I'm calling it progress even though some may not see it that way. I am hoping to have the car loan paid by June so I can rebuild the EF and fund the Christmas account before the holiday season. S4N: Thanks for your patience and help. I am returning my first but I will be back for it soon. Keep it safe! UPDATE: HappyCat $0 3-6-12 (Goal: $2,750)

onmywaynow: Congratulations on finishing your race & welcome! HappyCat: I like your plan! Update: The quote for DD's special glasses is a range between $1200-$1450. A friend is offering to help buy them for her. We have some praying and thinking to do at this point, whether to stay with this dr. or go with a lower octane dr. who does not have quite the same calliber of credentials. (The less qualified dr may not be any cheaper.) At the same time, regarding her other medical issue: the palate expander we got her did not fix her cross bite or jaw development issue, which was the expander's purpose. I'm guessing the orthodontist is going to recommend braces at the tune of $6K. If this were a cosmetic issue, I would want to wait, but since it is a jaw structure/development problem, I would love to see this fixed at a younger age before DD's jaw gets even more set in its errant ways. Oh Norway, carpet in a kitchen is a real challenge. We had sheet vinyl flooring that had staining, some torn holes and mold. It was in really bad shape. It always looked dirty due to the awful pitted texture.

I DID IT!! And a little extra. Tax money came in, but this does not mean I will stop saving. I've still got just over a month before Big Sarge comes home. Still more time to save! The Home 6 update 3/7/2012 added $7500 GOAL REACHED!!!

Just finished up my race on the northeaster wir. I would like to join the savers. onmywaynow: 3/5/12 $1,000 (Goal= $10,000) I not sure I did that correctly. Please let me know what I should add. I want $10,00 in savings by the end of the year. Thanks all. We're not to picky put the 3/5/12 start date should be in the parantheses as well onmywaynow: 3/5/12$1000 (3/5/12 $1000 Goal=$10000) Then you/we always know where you started at and where you are at currently!! Good luck and we are glad to have you!!

Welcome onmywaynow!!!! Congratulations on winning your debt race! It is so fantastic to have lots of ladies jumping from WIRR over to WIRS when they've won their race. It's such a wonderful transition to go from working hard at WIRR to saving hard at WIRS. I think you'll agree with many of us who have experienced that life's little ups and downs are easier to manage when you don't have money worries hanging over your head. I'd like to propose a toast - - to all those who have stared debt straight in the eye, and kicked it's butt on WIRR. CHEERS!
