Having 4 wheel drive won't even save you today! Eastern WA is bogged down with ice from all the freezing rain yesterday on top of the very wet snow from the night before. A real mess! We didn't even have school today and we never cancel school!!

I'm late on my mid month update, hopefully I'll post it today or tomorrow...caught up on reading the last 3 pages of postings, everyone is doing great!! HappyCat karma for making the hard but smart move to reallocate HI fund towards school funds. Besides, adding a trip fund back to savings will be easy peasy when you are ready to do so ;D to everyone in the midst of snowpocalypse - stay warm and safe...I went to "visit" the snow last weekend, I had a great time but have never braved a snow storm, so I can only imagine

yeah I am on the east side. I don't think my mom (in seattle) has left her house for two days! I had to go to work all this week and only one school was closed today.
Teachermom you must be further east. We missed out on the freezing rain on top of the 10 inches of snow we got here, they said we were going to get it but so far not, of course we all know freezing rain gets a lot more school canceled then snow over here. All that powder and I don't do winter sports!
Though I have to say I was very glad to get home today with enough day light to put a dent in all the snow in my drive and thought a lot of people were being stupid driving vehicles that had no business being out in all that snow! The worse was a little old lady in what looked like an 80's nova!

I am in Walla Walla and we got lots of freezing rain and a little snow (3 inches, freezing rain, 1/2 in, freezing rain, etc.....it is layered in). School is only on 2 hour delay today, supposed to warm up some but then the rain will start. Bluewood has gotten abotu 60 inches in the last 4-5 days. I love skiing! We were going to go tomorrow but not sure on the weather so cancelled. Maybe next weekend! Keep warm everyone! Teachermom

The power's back on here and the first time we've had an internet connection in probably 3 days. Snowshoe-ing around the block to see the damage makes us feel fortunate.

Those of us in the Seattle area should be used to no power...I mean, we've had to deal with the Mariner's lineup for the past 10 years

Oh how pitiful I feel like this update is! I have been saving up for my trip and any money that is going to savings from this recent paycheck is also going to toward the trip. I'm off to beautiful and lovely Hawaii for about 18 days. I used to live there so I'm going back to see friends and to just enjoy the amazing islands! I CAN'T WAIT! I have some of my W-2s ready to do my taxes and so far I'm getting quite a bit back so it's all going to my Roth2011. Once I get back from vaca and start working I should be able to fund the rest pretty quickly. Cheers and Aloha to all!

For me, there will be three paydays in February which means three direct deposits of $150 to my EF which will bring the total in EF to $750. I am going to look at my budget and see if I can cut here and there and find the extra $250 I will need to have my EF of $1,000 completely funded by the end of Feb 2012. That would be absolutely fantastic!!! SO - I am making that a mini goal!!

Anyone know of a good computer screen cleaner? I've had a stuffy nose for a while now and with Nalto's Mariner's comment I unexpectedly laughed too hard, and well, you know. ;D Yea SaverBee! So happy to see your first post! I see you're pushing big numbers again this year. I'll do my bet to keep up, percentage-wise, that it. SpeechChick - Have a great time in Hawaii! And, like you said, your savings goals will still be here when you get back. HappyCat - Your plan sounds fabulous! A wise teacher-friend mentioned to me once that you can't (in educational employment) increase what you make but you can decrease what you spend. I hope you're able to meet your goal; I have a Karma and a gold star waiting for you.

Sounds like the weather has been pretty rough for some of you! Please be safe!! We have had a rather snow-less winter so far this year, although we're supposed to get dumped on over the next 24 hours or so. And yet, the weather station says it's supposed to be 50 on Monday. As long as I can kick this nasty cold before work on Monday, I don't care what it does outside (within reason)! I finally got a chance to sit down and stare at our numbers long enough to put together a plan for the year. We were doubly blessed by not having to pay property taxes this month (same thing as what happened with our school taxes back in September). We had the money saved in advance though, so it's currently sitting there, waiting to pay off DH's deferred comp loan. However, I left both of my jobs to take a new position, and I won't be getting my first pay check for 4 weeks. And of course, the first pay check doesn't hit until 3 days AFTER our credit card bill is due. The bill is about 3x higher than normal, as that's the bill with all of the Christmas gifts, home remodel supplies and another large purchase on it. Our spending is back down to normal levels, thankfully, but we'll end up dipping into the loan payoff money to cover the credit card bill for the month. I'm not very proud of that, but it should only delay our loan payoff by one month. And, so that it doesn't happen again, one of my savings goals for the year is a "House ER Fund"... so that in the future, we'll have a specific fund set aside for unanticipated needs. I put together a very high savings goal for the year... it'll be a while before I truly know if we'll be able to reach them, but we're going to do our best. The most difficult part will be figuring out how to automate them now that my pay checks are biweekly! I also need to be careful of not focusing enough on our retirement accounts. I won't receive a full paycheck until my 5th biweekly check in April, another lovely 'perk' of working for the state. So, I won't know my real biweekly take home until then. Either way, that's the point when everything else should have settled out, and I will kick the retirement funding into overdrive. It was fun watching that account jump previously, but that's going to go on the back burner for a little bit. Basically, the next two or three months are all about "hurry up and wait". Blech. Anyway, here is what I have set for us for 2012. Some of these are mandatory savings (taxes, car, insurances), but others will just make life easier in the long run. 2011 Accounts | Goal | 1/21/2012 | Need | Saved | | Insurances | $2,600.00 | $604.45 | $1,995.55 | 23.25% | | Taxes - School | $4,000.00 | $451.35 | $3,548.65 | 11.28% | | Taxes - Property | $3,000.00 | $0.00 | $3,000.00 | 0.00% | | Car | $6,500.00 | $375.00 | $6,125.00 | 5.77% | | House ER Fund | $3,500.00 | $0.00 | $3,500.00 | 0.00% | | Main ER Fund | $3,300.00 | $0.00 | $3,300.00 | 0.00% | | Vacations | $2,000.00 | $0.00 | $2,000.00 | 0.00% | | SS - College | $2,200.00 | $0.00 | $2,200.00 | 0.00% | | Retirement - Pre-Tax | $17,000.00 | $1,844.02 | $15,155.98 | 10.85% | | Total | $44,100.00 | $3,274.82 | $40,825.18 | 7.43%
I am: Tobinikui: 1/21/2012 $3,274.82 (1/1/2012 $0) And just for good measure.....

So my actual savings is still sitting at 10k, but I'll be depositing another 1,000 early in Feb. My Smarty Pig account is at 235.33. I'm torn now though. The folks at YM have gotten to me. I'm debating if I want to close Smarty Pig and just start investing the $ I would have put in SP. Thoughts from you saving sultans?

On Tuesday when my funds come through, I will be paying of CA taxes. I should've done this early this year oh well hindsight. At least I'm not waiting until next year. So my house fund will be lower. I can't wait till next week. I am going to get my IRS taxes done and see where I stand with them.

Nalto - I have done a little of my own investing since 2008 but don't take that as meaning I know anything. Most of my investing success is just good luck. The only helpful piece of advice I have is only invest an amount of money that you'd be willing to throw away. With my investing history, I liken 'playing' the stock market to gambling at a casino. I don't know much about either except I'm pretty sure my odds are generally bad. I've had some stocks lose 88% of their value (Alcatel/Lucent) since I bought them and others (Starbucks) see a 430% increase. (Thank you coffee addicts!) If you're hanging around YM's thread you're probably far more educated than I am already. Best of luck to you!

Thank you! I'm leaning towards closing the account and investing it, mostly because it is money I'm willing to "throw away." It had no real clear savings goal anyway, so investing it may be worth it.

I followed Phil's advice and invested the excess EF in index funds, its boring but simple. One month I was up 300 for the year! At year end I think I am down a couple of bucks but no big losses or anything.

Just a small update this month. We are worried that we have shot too high, but I guess it is only January, so there is still a lot of time to see what happens! We will be doing our taxes soon and I know that will help this year. Most of that will go to medical since the 2K in the medical fund is something that we recently had to spend.

I don't think I will be able to pull this off every month, but WOW!! I moved in with DBF and he pays all of the household bills while I am able to throw as much as I can into savings and other things. My main goal for February is going to be to pay off the cruise. It's not due until the end of April, but the sooner I can get that paid off, the sooner I can book my flights, buy clothes, save up spending money etc etc etc! Hope everyone is staying safe and warm. It's supposed to be an amazing 56 degrees with sunny skies here in Southern Indiana today! I could get used to this.....

Karma to HappyCat for making that good decision! Thank you to all who posted sharing a little about yourselves. I enjoyed learning a little more about you! A little about me: I am a stay at home mom who home schools. DS is 6; DD is 10. I teach a few piano lessons and play occasionally. DH is a saxophonist. It was super hard to pay off our debt of $84,000 in four years. I think I pushed us too hard. After becoming debt free, DH had skin cancer, I had wisdom teeth extracted, we discovered DD had amblyopia and also needed a palate expander to correct the skeletal growth of her jaw, DH's car reached 208K miles and needed replacing, the A/C went on the brink during our beastly triple digit summer, the dryer died, etc. So what a year! By God's grace, we have not slipped back into debt. Update: Seriously inching along here. freshnewday 1/30/2012 $532 (Start = $452 Goal = $13500)Accounts | Goals | 1/1/2012 | 1/30/2012 | Spent | % Met | Roses | Emergency Fund | $2500 | $0 | $ | $0 | 0% | | DD Medical | $6000 | $452 | $532 | $0 | 7% | | Home Repair | $5000 | $0 | $ | $0 | 0% | | TOTALS | $13500 | $452 | $532 | $0 | .03%

Saving4Norway: I hope you have my karma and gold star at the ready! I can't wait to post my update this evening!!! Freshnewday: Thanks for the decision karma! Wow! Murphy needs a nap for sure!! You are an inspiration for handling ALL that with NO new debt!! Karma to you for that! ETA: UPDATE Fund | Goals | Jan 1, 2012 | Current | Remaining | % of Goal | Emergency Fund | $1,000 | $165.32 | $1,000.00 | $0.00 | 100.00% | Christmas 2012 | $1,000 | $0.00 | $60.00 | $940.00 | 6.00% | Cat Stash 2012 | $750 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $750.00 | 0.00% | Total | $2,750 | $165.32 | $1,060.00 | $1,690.00 | 38.55%
HappyCat: $1,060 1-31-12 ( $165 Start $2,750 Goal) Mr. Cat is going to Australia for four months and we had a state of the union address over the weekend. I told him that I have been worried about not having enough cash in EF while he is so far away and that I would like to have $1,000. He asked how much I needed and gave the difference. I know it's a little thing but it makes me really happy to know that it is in there. I changed my Hawaii goal to "Cat Stash 2012" and that will be used for one time expenses like new glasses, dentist, car tags etc. Once I get the Christmas and Cat Stash goals funded, I am going to up my EF to $2,000. Wow..isn't saving fun???

Here is my update for January. I added a new column called "holding". This is where I will keep track of money that I am accumulating for one of my goals, such as the HSAs or IRAs. Or where I keep money in cases where I want to accumulate money and then send it in one lump sum or where I haven't quite decided which savings account the money is going into when I receive the money. Only ~$8,000 more to go! Is it possible to do it by the time Big Sarge comes home? If I spend NO money on dresses or shoes, and pinch every penny until it SCREAMS, I know I can do it, you guys! Nothing like waiting until the last minute, though. I guess I work better under pressure? Hi everyone, I´m MommyC. I have been a lurker on these boards on and off since maybe 2007. Our family of 2 (me and DS) are living on a very tight budget, but I have been relatively good at still putting money aside for emergencies and other goals. In January, I decided to take my budgeting a step further, and developed my first ever REAL cash budgeting system. I will have to see how that will work out, but I am confident. Hopefully, being made accountable for my goals and indirectly my budget will help me to reach my goals. So, I am excited to have finally made the step from lurker to participating saver. As I said, my budget is really tight, so I can´t save a lot each month. Whatever you see in the table below is due to saving for a looong time. I guess I could be called a turtle-saver. Here are my goals for 2012: 1) Fully Fund 3-Months EF by June 2012 (EUR 5,000.00) 2) Save EUR 700.00 for my son 3) Save EUR 1,000.00 towards retirement 4) Start saving toward 6-Months EF (EUR 10,000.00) Account | Starting Balance | Last Balance | Amount Saved | New Balance | % | Goal Amount | 3-Months EF | 4,138.28 | 4,138.28 | - | 4,138.28 | 82.77% | 5,000.00 | DS | 83.63 | 83.63 | - | 83.63 | 11.95% | 700.00 | Retirement | 663.65 | 663.65 | - | 663.65 | 69.86 | 1,000.00 | Total | 4,885.56 | 4,885.56 | - | 4,885.56 | | 6,700.00 |
(This table just took me a while to figure it out, but I did it . Here is my tagline: MommyC: 01/31/2012 - EUR 4,885.56 (01/31/2012 - EUR 4,885.56)

Welcome, MommyC! I'm glad to see another 'turtle saver' (relatively speaking) like me! I was noticing today how many of the savers here have such huge number goals , and mine was looking kinda puny . I had to remind myself that it's the best I can do, and we're all in different situations.

murphath 1/31/12 $702 (2/10/11 $22)
Welcome MommyC! As you can see, I'm a turtle, too. Actually, I'm just saving for DS's college graduation and subsequent trip to Disneyland.
I also have a little over $200 in Disney dollars! The $702 is "found" money: rebates, money I find on my daily walks, and recycling money. The Disney dollars are from a Chase card: I use it to pay bills and then write one check to Chase. Once I retrieve the Disney dollars, I will close that cc account and go back to using my Amex.
I know that $902 won't be enough as there will be 8 of us (5 in the fam and 3 boyfriends/girlfriend. I figure this may be the only opportunity for one more family vacay before everyone goes their separate ways. Even so, only 6 of us can do the 2 day Disney pass. Two have to be back to work/school and can only take one day off. Sad because one of them is my DD1. The other is her boyfriend.
So, I'm hoping to have enough "found" money and Disney dollars to cover the ticket costs for the 8 of us. I'm also putting away $200-$300 month extra to cover all other graduation expenses.
