I finally figured out how to add it but the black background doesn't show up its very light. Just click on somebody's ticker, then click on create new ticker, go through the process clicking next after your choices once you are finished I think you click save and then copy the one that is under bbcode and paste it in your signature line. That's what I did only problem the word are in white.

Thanks twin and saving for your help and encouragement.
I'm only going to be moving towards my house saving. I'm going to get a lot that doesn't have a premium and also a smaller house. Or perhaps I'll still get the bigger lot the premium is only $1500. I wanted to wait for the larger lot but who will take care of it for me when I get older no DH here.

Sealy -My understanding is it is a locked in rate for 5 years and then can increase 1% a year after that. Usually whether it does increase or not is based on some factor like the treasury notes or something. They don't always increase though but can. Often people will say if you are going to be moving in that period of time, take it or if you know you can refi after that to lock in a better rate. Depends on your goal and how long you intend to be there.
I dont' guarantee I have it 100% correct, but that is my understanding of how it works.
Hope that helps.

thanks teachermom. She said that the payment after 5 years would depend on the new principal balance. For example if you have a $200,000 mortgage and you have paid off about $15,000. My new payments would be based on 185,000 instead of 200,000. Post this question on the board.

sealy: [/b] Two things: 1. The 5/1 ARM: Is there a reason you're looking at this option? If you plan on staying in your home longer than 5 years, you'll most likely be better off with a traditional mortgage. The rates on the 15 yr/20yr/30yr mortgages are incredibly low right now and they are FIXED rates. You run the risk of the rate being much higher in 5 years--and I think that's a very good possibility. Have your realtor run the numbers for you (or you can do it yourself at bankrate mortgage calculator). You may save a bit the first five years but if the rate goes up 1% per year after that, you could be in real trouble. My BIL is a mortgage broker and his advice is always the same: stay with the fixed rate unless you know for sure you'll be moving within that 5 year period. Hope that helps. 2. The yard: We have a big back yard--atleast by Calif. standards. Now that we're older, it can be a real pain to keep looking good. I love to garden but the upkeep is a lot of work/expense. It was great for the kids when they were little, though. We had some really fun times back there! And I guess it will be good for resale when the time comes. Been here 28 years and I still hate the thought of packing up and moving!

Hi, everyone! My goal ends in APRIL, so I have got to get on the stick with the saving. It is theoretically possible, but something always seems to come up. To re-introduce myself, I am an Army wife, my husband and I have 2 children, and I am probably going to have to change around what I have allocated my funds for. We are moving to Alaska, so I don't want to be buying flowers for this house, or patio furniture before we move, just so the movers can break it. I suppose I could spend that money on dresses... ;D Fund | Goals | Jan1st | Current | YTD | Spent | % Met | Dress Fund | $1,000 | $0 | $1,000 | $1,000 | $0 | 100.00% | Fabric | $200 | $0 | $200 | $200 | $0 | 100.00% | Flowers | $200 | $0 | $200 | $200 | $0 | 100.00% | Patio Furniture | $1,000 | $0 | $1,000 | $1,000 | $0 | 100.00% | Savings | $17,600 | $0 | $8,535 | $8,535 | $0 | 48.49%

UPDATE: HappyCat: $325.00 1/17/12 (Start - $165.32 - Goal $2,750) Here is my update for this pay period. I am making progress in the EF and really want to focus on getting that to $1,000 asap! I haven't made a decision about the Hawaii trip yet and I'm sitting on the fence. On one paw, I really want to go and see Nurse Bestie, but on the other paw, it's year end at work during that time and I would get so far behind. The timing is not great and the $$ I would spend could be more effective in paying off my last cc. Hmmmm.... Anyway...here's my FIRST update of 2012...heading in the right direction! Increase of +$159.68 which breaks down to $150 direct deposit and $9.68 "change" in my paycheck. I will take it! Fund | Goals | Jan 1, 2012 | Current | Remaining | % of Goal | Emergency Fund | $1,000 | $165.32 | $300.00 | $700.00 | 30.00% | Christmas 2012 | $1,000 | $0.00 | $25.00 | $975.00 | 2.50% | Hawaii June 2012 | $750 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $750.00 | 0.00% | Total | $2,750 | $165.32 | $325.00 | $2,425.00 | 11.82%
Saving4Norway: I changed my goal from $2,000 to $2,750 in post #19. No biggie...thanks for your help.

I'm kicking myself. I had $200 earmarked for savings, but I went to Spokane (Gonzaga U) to visit a buddy for the weekend who's in a masters program out there. We had a blast, the beer flowed like wine and laughs were plentiful, so I don't feel TOO bad. I guess Operation Lay Low for the rest of the month is in effect. Here in the NW, we're preparing for Snowmaggedon, so even if I wanted to spend money, I wouldn't be able to go anywhere!

LOL, Nalto, we've all been there. The perverbial "They" say all things in moderation, including moderation. You seem to have a really good savings head on your shoulders so I'm sure you'll be back to productive savings again next month. And "snowpocalypse" is going strong here in E'claw, too. There's an open grassy lot next door and all night long kids in their 4WDs are rippin through the lawn. Looks like fun until someone takes out our fence. Again. And be sure to stay off the roads - all of us think we can drive in the snow but none of us can. ;D Happycat - Thanks for pointing that out, I'll go fix that right now.

I sent Nurse Bestie a text and told her I was not going to be able to make it to Hawaii for the trip in June. She was really sweet and said she understood and that the offer is open if I change my mind. I'm really sad because I would love to go but I think I made the right decision. We may plan a more affordable weekend trip down to the beach or somewhere fun in late summer. I should be on a more firm footing by then. *high paw* for making the right choice! I will probably change my Hawaii category in my savings budget to Kitten#2 Tuition/Books Fall 2012. How boring is that in comparison!! Saving4Norway: Thanks!

Savings took a minor hit as we spent $225 on the vet for the kitties' annual visit and shots. But that's what the money was there for, so I don't feel too badly. I feel a bit lost on whether I should focus on paying down debt or savings for starting our family. The debt hangs heavier over my head, and we have nearly $5k in savings at the moment...

Hi, can you adjust some expenses in your budget or decrease an optional savings like vacation or gift savings, in order to increase your debt repayment? You do have quite a bit of debt, as I recall, but I don't know your salary levels either.

I am trying to keep our grocery budget in line, and limit our eating out, with limited success. DH and I just enable each other around food... (which is why I'm also on the losers thread, although to the naked eye most people would say I'm at a healthy weight, I know better).
As for optional savings, we are going on a once-in-a-lifetime cruise to Alaska with my family (this is not negotiable to me as it's probably the last time my family is going to do a group vacation for a long time, and we havne't done so in like a decade) so I'm saving up to have it paid for and spending money for it by July. So that's a priority too. And gifts... we have 8 weddings this year that we are going to, luckily all fairly local, but we do have to buy gifts for the people (close friends and close family, so we can't even skip them, and we're in three of them, between us). Two weddings we are declining (yes, 10 invites this year, ugh. It's gotta end soon, right?). So, another priority as I don't want to be using CCs for that.
At this point, the car fund, the pets fun, and my freelancing backup fund (for when I quit my job in a few years and work from home) are probably the most optional, and I stopped contributing to them as I shifted that to vacation and gifts and EF. At this point I'm sending about $2k a month to debt, and we are using CCs less and less so we should be making progress. Should be. I should probably send less to debt and realize our budget needs more wiggle room for the unexpected or the last-minute gift, gas for car trips, etc and leave it in our checking account for that stuff. That would help stop the use of CCs at least.
As for our income, we bring home close to $8k a month (which blows my mind), so we should NOT be having these issues. That said, over a third of that goes to our mortgage/taxes. And another $1k to our student loans (mainly DH... which I knew going in to this marriage, as he knew about my CC debt). And we live in a HCOL area (joy) so I'm not sure how that affects things.
But typing this all out is helping me focus a bit. I still want to save up for that trip and for all the gifts we need to buy, but other than that, debt payoff is a major priority. That and continuing to fine-tune the budget and get our food budget more in line with where it should be. I really just want to free up that money going to pay off our CCs so we can spend it on our family, on our house, and of course put into savings! I just want it all NOW. lol.
Thanks, in any event, for helping me think through this!
Thanks for listening to me ramble...

Credit card usage isn't always the problem so much as a symptom of other problems, like under-budgeting in certain areas. I know for me, that's the case when it happens now since I started paying attention to my finances! I know you're planning on having a baby soon, and I think I read that you're considering moving too, so I'm sure it's really important to you to fix up your finances as much as humanly possible before such added expenses come into the picture!

I think under budgeting is definitely the issue, for the most part. Something to work on...
Moving wouldn't be for at least a year, more likely two, but yes, best to start planning ahead now! I do feel we have some wiggle room if we lowered our debt payments, and allocated that money to baby expenses, but I don't want to slow down our debt payments that much. In general, my freelancing money goes to debt payoff in addition to what I budget for debt monthly. But this month our 30k mile checkup for our CRV was nearly $800 unexpectedly (some stuff needed fixing). So we'll be shopping around for better prices next time, but this time we just needed it done. So my freelance check went to pay that down, so we just treaded water. Boo.
I'm still cursing Hurricane Irene, as we need to spend nearly $1k in the spring to fix the fence. And our central AC unit needs replacing (as does the ceiling it leaked through). Our upstairs is a sauna in summer, so that can't be bypassed either. So also need to bring debt repayment to a near standstill those months to cover those expenses. Fun times!!
Thanks again for listening Rocky!

UPDATE and first postdragon2008: 1/18/12 $18,507.85 ($10,923.75 1/1/12 / Goal=$32,500) Sorry to the 2011 savers - I didn't post in December because of some large hits to the pocketbook. Because of these hits, and the vulnerability I feel when I look at my total savings, I'm slowing down my debt payoff to save more in a general fund (but I'm not tracking it here) and will shove extra money there as well. I have some of my perennial categories in the mix for this year as well as a new category for my new hobby and someday a trip to Italy (this year? next? who knows!). I may need to add some more goals, especially as I adjust spending downwards to get more to save. Oops - a little about me. I live in Colorado and am coming up on 25 years of being a paralegal - I'm single with two feline furbabies. After all these years I'm debt free except for my mortgage and have savings (although not enough to help me sleep well)!! I'm finding that the more I save and the longer I'm at it, the more I need in my savings account to feel easy in my mind. I've found joy in budgeting and tracking investments, but have started a few new hobbies to get me out of my reading rut (not that there is anything wrong with reading away a vacation!). Although I lurked for years on the original WIRR threads, I just started posting/saving/budgeting seriously in 2008.
Looking forward to spending the year with you all and anyone else who finds their way here!

Laughing at you poor non-snow driving Seattlites. 10 inches and counting over on the other side of the "hill" and my boss didn't want me to leave early to get home before dark! Some of the big rigs knew the drill and some of them were really confused as to where to take off the stupid chains! everyone and their mother has a 4wd vehicle on this side though!
