This has become such a politics centered board nobody commented on the rate hike today, shouldn't us savers celebrate it? It does appear to impact dividends according to this article: "Another potentially negative result of rising interest rates is specific to dividend stocks -- especially those that pay bond-like yields. Stocks are assumed to be riskier investments than bonds, so when the risk-free rate of return increases, investors may be more inclined to sell their stocks and buy assets with guaranteed income streams." www.google.com/amp/s/www.fool.com/amp/investing/general/2015/10/03/how-will-rising-interest-rates-affect-your-dividen.aspx

This particular board has stayed very stock investment centered. Perhaps start a thread on this particular board and we can discuss there rather than here? As far as rising interest rates helping small investors, rates will have to rise to about 2% to make a dent in saver's interest income and that is a year away. Even Yelton said two more hikes this year.

Thanks AJ and Value Buy for your comments. I consider all you guys and gals that post on here my friends, although we have never met personally and most likely never will.
I, like most of us.,has a Political View but I have made a effort to keep this part of the world out of Politics. I know it can sometimes be difficult because decisions Politicians make affects us or our families in some fashion.
I try to stay away from the political boards as most people are so divided by their particular Political affiliation neither side seems to care about what is really important for the citizens of our nation.
I have even sold my investments in a couple of companies this past year solely because they were too involved in Political and Social Issues. I want my investments to concentrate on making money not promoting their Social agendas.
As for the rate hike, I think investors are making a mountain out of a mole hill. perhaps .75 percent this year and a whopping .25 percent last year? This not really going to hurt anyone but perhaps the companies that were on the verge of dying already. I look at it from an optimistic point of view - that the economy is improving significantly now so as to allow for these rate hikes.
In other words - This is a positive for our economy and the stock market.
AJ - I would argue against the premise that "Bonds are safer than equities" - I personally have never bought into this although I know it is constantly repeated in the investing world.
As far as people abandoning the stock market for fixed income - That would still be years away - When banks (if ever) start paying over 5% for CDs or Savings accounts then I will take notice, until then the Stock Market is the place for me !

Face it, any place that has an interest paying cash account (Bank, Brokerage) isn't going to raise what it pays saver until the Federal Rate is at least 2.5%, and then the Banks, Brokerages will most likely try and find a way to not pay any more than the pathetic 0.10% they have paid folks for nearly a decade now.
So no the rate hike doesn't help savers; because Banks & Brokerages arent forced to pay Savers any more than they do now 0.10%.
And until that changes; Rate hike by the FED won't mean; Jack or S**** to savers.

I bought an additional 450 shares of Whitestone REIT (WSR) today. They were down 9% because they announced a secondary offering of stock. They had announced yesterday that they had acquired two additional properties in Texas ( One in Houston and the other in Dallas) both in very upscale neighborhoods. They are also getting several acres of land that they can develop. The stock offering will help pay for the shopping centers and the thousands of square feet in space they will add to lease out.
With a yield of almost 9% I just had to add to my position - I believe it will pay off nicely !

VA, that is a "bonanza" dividend, large shareholders sure should be very happy! Hope you had some. Unfortunately it wasn't one of my holdings and I did consider buying some as its ex date is the end of may. On $10,000 investment you could make over a thousand in a month if you are able to get out in time, didn't want to take a chance though. $10,000 / $67.41 = 148 Shs $148 x $7.50 = $1,110 in Special Dividends Although ................. I am surprised the share price was only up $0.67 yesterday!

I am not sure if they are big enough to survive as a stand alone food corporation. If not, look for a company sale to a large corporate entity. Possibly Kraft Heinz?

Value - They sold the restaurants and bought another company - Pineland Farms Potato Company. I guess the bulk of their business was coming from food sales in groceries. Their Mashed Potatoes are very popular, I know I use them at least twice a week. They have Mac & Cheese and different flavor Mashed potatoes and stuffing I believe. They also sell several other side dishes including seasonal products like Green Bean Casserole, Sweet Potatoes and other popular holiday dishes and they intend to develop more.
I think I just talked myself into it, as the stock is down today , I believe I will buy about 150 shares and try and make an extra $1,000 this coming month.

VA. WSR has taken a hit on price this past week and especially today. Ugh! Street must not like the new property purchases and stock sales offering coming up.

All the Retail REITS went down , not just WSR so I am not worried. Because of REITS leasing to retail stores that are doing bad investors are panicking but I don't see things as bad as they do. My only regret is buying in a little too soon but for the long run they will be fine. They have some great high in properties. whitestonereit.com/

Southside Bancshares has raised its quarterly dividend from $.25 to $0.28 per share. $1.12 per share annually. Note : Southside Bancshares (SBSI) is the company that also has two "Special : dividends per year in addition to the regular dividend and also has a 5% ("Share Dividend") usually in June of each year so it should announce it any day now.
