Afternoon Roy, some rather tetchy people on this thread, not conducive to polite discussion. Tosh may I commend you on your very improved peaceful approach. So much better than the old days. (My transgressions included) Carry on. Kinder softer does work better. Peace always my friend

If you strip theism down to its most basic premise, it is an explanation for all things existing.
Our brains operate on a cause and effect principle, we want to know what causes effects, it is a very useful survival tool.
Our ancestors did not know what caused most things existing and explained them as the effect of a hidden cause, ie the actions of an unseen agent.
Initially each unexplained effect was attributed to a spirit ( animism), then to many gods( polytheism) and finally one god ( monotheism). We now have explanations for most causes-effects including the first cause but yet our consciousness still retains this premise.
Purpose is a form of cause, we want an explanation as to why we are here, what is the purpose to living.
The answer to this question is an individual and collective one, generally speaking it is to improve the well being of oneself and others. This purpose could be referred to as the first cause or God, the message is not dissimilar.
In reality, I as an atheist have the same purpose as a theist, the only difference is the definition of God.
Peace and please stop throwing stones, I am not a Jew. ;D

I am sure she is a lovely lady, theology is a fascinating area of study but people naturally take it very personally, it affects their worldview which is very important to our self image.

RIck is a good guy, but I'm not sure why I'd have to agree with him 100% to make him a good guy.

The last God thread went on for 2 years, morality and spirituality are important to most folks, regardless of their beliefs.
Nothing nicer than discussing the nature of existence, they call it philosophy.

I am sure he is a good guy, and I am a lovely guy.
The question I asked is an extremely difficult one to answer, to believe the bible is true one must have faith in God, however one is unaware of God until one reads the bible.
It is an irritating paradox.

Roy is aware of my admiration for Jesus and his moral philosophy, however the historical Jesus as against the mythological Jesus is even more fascinating and impressive.
In my opinion people should concentrate on the religion of Jesus and not the religion about Jesus, they are two different animals.

How so? I wouldn't have known who God, Rama, Odin, Ganesh or any other deity was without someone teaching me about their existence.

God very well could have that ability, because who he is and what he can do is created by you based on your beliefs.
I don't believe in the existence of god, so the answer for me personally is no.

I bet they had two good ears. Actually, no, lol. One guy I represented was almost deaf and illiterate. That was interesting. Although I think the hearing impairment came later in life and he could hear fine earlier.

lol, nice try my friend, except the paradox is not mine, I am not the one who can not answer a rather simple question.
Why does one believe the bible to be true ?
Failure to answer this question does not signal a tie, not even if you have faith.

Which you can't do, because it's faith.

Ask any tribesmen in the Amazon if he believes in the God of Abraham, I doubt he could answer.
If God had the ability to make his presence known then there would be no need for books, plus he only speaks to people in deserts, except for some lunatic from America called Joe Smith.
I have read the Book of Mormon, misprints and all, he should have proof read the copy of the bible he was plagiarizing from.

Incorrect, faith relates to God, I want to know why one believes the bible to be true, it cannot be faith in god because one hasn't discovered god until one reads the bible.
In reality one has to believe the book is true before one reads it, which is a tad silly.
