You definitely need to be patient -- you don't have that much to lose, so it can take a little while to start.

For my frame, I think I need to lose 15 pounds.

Expect it to take at least 3 months. When there's not that much to lose, it's harder to lose it.

Better to expect 3 months and have it take 2, then expect 2 and have it take 3.

I lost one pound since stopping desserts and candy.
It is easier to NOT eat something than it is to try to exercise it off.
A person can exercise so much that when it's taken away, it's impossible to reduce eating by that much. I found that out when I skied regularly and then there was no snow.

I expected a slight gain or no movement after getting back into the gym last week, but I am happy to see another loss! 12/27 - 207.6 1/03 - 205.4 1/10 - 204.0 I found a great goal app for my android. It allows me to set goals, reminders, accomplishments, and credits. I love it. I especially love that I set my first weight goal at 20lbs (should be 60lbs, didn't want it to look so overwhelming), and with almost 4 lbs lost I am 20% to my first goal. WOOHOO!

I am using My Goals from Monologue Software. And even better - the app was FREE!

I have been doing that I think (someone from this board has recommended) "Couch to 5K". I'm on my second week. Boy was I pooped last night. I ate pretty good yesterday. I snacked on baby carrots last night after dinner. Which is really good for me. After dinner snacking is my downfall.

Last night I had an apple instead of a beer while we were watching the game. That's a win - right?

Exercise can be important but, at least for me, the diet has been the most important part. I haven't really been exercising that much, but the weight is coming off because of the change in how I'm eating. This is totally true. A permanent switch to healthy, clean eating made a permanent, 30 lb difference on my 5'9" frame. (I hover right around 150 lbs.) I never dieted - I can't stand the dieting mindset of deprivation and restriction. I just learned what sensible portions look like, and started cooking from scratch from high quality, whole food ingredients. It's been 5 or 6 years, I can't eat a lot of the cheap processed junk I used to - it just doesn't taste good and I feel gross afterwords. That includes most fast food/chain restaurants, frozen meals, even most candy. Reading the labels on some of that stuff makes me sick. I eat more delicious things now than I have in my entire life, including butter and cream and red meat and whole milk and real cheese. It's wonderful. The switch isn't easy. Ditching processed foods is a pain in the ass at first. You have to learn how to cook, and you have to care. But it's totally worth it. And once it's an ingrained part of the way that you eat, it's easier, and full of positive reinforcement. It's no more difficult now than the way anyone else eats, and I can't imagine going back.

Today has been a struggle with emotional eating. I know that I am doing it and still go and stuff my face. This evening I got into it with the cell phone people. The guy on the phone was rude and condescending. I showed him. When I got off the phone I ate half a row of club crackers and sat and cried.
Called back a couple hours later got a different person and got the issue resolved.

I am battling my "only look at the scale 1x/week" resolution. I know that I have done VERY well with portion control and absent-minded eating this week (esp the evenings which are hardest for me), but I am dying to see the #.

Sharon emotional eating is tough. My oldest ds has been a handful. He's much better now. But when him and I would fight the first thing I would want to do is eat. If you recognize it you can stop it.
Last night not the best eating. We had a sports function to go to. I wanted to grab a Pb & J and eat it on the go. DH thought he'd be nice and make a pizza. UGH! I ate it cause we had to go. But I only ate one piece. I ate a bowl of shredded wheat when we got home later that night. So not the best dinner but it could have been worse.

Called back a couple hours later got a different person and got the issue resolved. This has always been the most difficult part for me. I've had to spend quite some time retraining myself on the emotional eating. I started by keeping some carrots and grape tomatos clean and in a baggie in the fridge (every week, if it was still around I'd use it for regular eating a make a new baggie). I knew the things I usually grabbed for when I was feeling upset and stressed and I put sticky notes on them reminding me that I had to go eat the veggies first -- if I finished them (and it was a good sized amount), then I could go ahead and have something else. Eventually I started to change the reminders to tell me that I shouldn't be eating because I was stressed or upset. Now, I find that I don't go for the food. It took some time, but I'm glad.

I am an emotional eater as well. I have gained weight because I haven't lived with my husband since February of 2010. I miss him and I fill the void by eating I guess. I am doing better. I was 130 and now my scale says I weigh 125.6 I would like to lose 10 more pounds for my small frame.

ok, I'm back from vacation, finally almost healthy and ready to start. sounds like you guys all have some momentum going, which is awesome! I think the past few days of being sick has probably helped kick-start something in me though. since I haven't been eating much, I don't have much of an appetite either. since I'm looking to lose pounds as well as build muscle tone, I'm going to track both weight and some measurements. I'm curious if anyone else is doing measurements? if not, I just won't post those. *I'm relaxing with breakfast/catching up now. I will post numbers later today.

Exercise VS Diet
Keep up with your exercises especially weight training because that sets your metabolism ....if you screw up on your eating...you'll be 'covered' with your bumped up metabolism from weight training.

This week I held my own. I only lost 2/10ths of a pound but I did not gain back any that I had lost the week before. The week started out okay, not great but okay. At the end of the week DD got a nasty flu and couldn't eat and the smell of anything cooking made her sicker. The last 2 days I've pretty much eaten dinner rolls and M&M's.

For me, I'm not doing that yet since, even if I'm gaining muscle, my measurements will still be going down, and I have enough weight left to lose that it's not an issue for now.

well, I expect mine to continue going down as well. I'd have to gain a LOT of muscle before my numbers would start to go up - I am a girl, after all. I just figure if the measurements are steadily and slowly going down, rather than big chunks, it's a decent indicator that I'm toning muscle rather than just blowing weight off. so I have the ugly numbers. although, I have to admit the weight wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be. guess that just means I've lost more muscle tone than I care to say..... starting numbers: weight: 198.4 waist: 40" thigh: 25" bicep: 12"
