One morning, sit next to him with a measuring cup. Show him what a serving looks like. THEN when he fills up the bowl, measure it ... so he can SEE that he's eating 3, 4, 5 servings (or whatever). He will still need to decide what he wants to do (and eat), but for some people it takes a VISIBLE example.

thyme - we got "the kids" a Wii for Xmas, and he's been using it a lot so far. ;D
Molly - I measured my cereal this morning (DH and the older kids were already off to school when the little guy and I got up for breakfast). I'm eating 2 servings, so DH is probably getting about 3 in his bowl. It is high fiber cereal, 90 cal a serving. I guess I'd rather he fill up on something like that than whatever he'd substitute if he only ate the single serving.
I know DH pretty well by now - it has to be his idea, or he'll rebel against it. Nagging doesn't work, and any mention of this stuff would be nagging (in his eyes) at this point, since he really does know the reality, we've discussed it enough.

I didn't exercise yesterday. I woke up with a sinus headache. Yesterday it was bad. It's better today, still there but not as bad. I will go to gym and do at least 20 minutes of cardio and weight lifting. I did good with food yesterday. I saved enough portions to have 6 ounces of Merlot after dinner. Todays menu breakfast I had 1 cup of Kashi Cereal 1/2 cup skim milk snack is 100 calorie cheese stick. Lunch is 1/2 pb & jelly sandwich. I tbs of pb and 2 tsp of jelly. Also I brought some Progrsso light soup and an orange. I'll probably eat the sandwich before I work out and then around 2:00 I'll eat the soup and add some frozen peas to the soup to up my veggies a little. Were having homemade chicken vegetable soup for dinner.

I'm tired, I'm cranky & I want a doughnut. The doughnut shop is across the street. I'm working on not going over. Hopefully no one comes in to see me because they did something stupid. I might not make it, then.

diana - try eating an apple. Although I know that apples do contain calories, I think they are one of the most powerful weight management (and probably weight loss) tools on the planet. They are sweet, but not too sweet. They are crunchy. They have fiber. They take enough effort to eat that you are usually done with the urge to chew by the end. They make you feel full. You can only feel so guilty for eating an apple. You can eat them for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, dessert, kids love them, adults love them. They come in 25 different varieties. You can get them just about anywhere. They are usually pretty cheap (unless you get hooked on apple pears - then you have to adjust your whole grocery budget - but totally worth it!!) They are available year round. They can hang out on your desk or counter for days without any refrigeration.
Really - to prevent over-donuting - try over-appleing.

Brrrrrrrr ..... '
OK, It's 34 and foggy out there ~ I am NOT biking in that! I'd freeze my fingers and butt off, lol! It's supposed to be 20 degrees warmer ~ and possibly sunny ~ this afternoon, so my plan is to bike 10 miles AFTER I go out to lunch with my girlfriend! BRRR! BRRR!
Since I won't be biking this morning, my plan is to do chores around the house ... and to wash some sheets and towels. Hey, maybe the dryer will warm things up in here? Now THAT's an idea! (It's currently 53 degrees in our house!)

I love apple pears! They are also good if you crave something crunchy. Most days I have soup for lunch, and like to have something of stronger texture to go with it. If I do not plan ahead I find myself attracted to the vending machine - to solve that one I simply do not carry money with me. I find its not worth it i I have to go all the way back to my desk to get some cash.

So glad the Holidays are over. Around here all the neighbors bring food and goodies , so glad it is all gone and what wasn't I threw out. I am writing everything down that I eat and I am trying to eat healthier. I like to walk, but it is really hard to do so when the temps are so cold right now and it is dark when i get off work, so i try to go to the farm every evening and help do chores to burn calories.

Thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately I can smell the doughnut shop. I wasn't hungry, I just wanted a doughnut. I haven't gone over. My cube co-workers have been dealing w/ the idiots.

I did pretty good today, not stellar, but pretty good. There were all kinds of treats at work today and I did not eat a single chip. I did have a cupcake but did find the will power to not touch the chips, or bagels.
Did I mention that I didn't eat any chips. ;D

After straining a lower back muscle in November (and waiting far too long to see a doc for it), I finally got back into the gym yesterday. And I feel really good today. I pay $10/week for the gym and $30/week for a session with a great trainer. They also have a great full service website. I can keep track of my workouts and fill out a food tracker daily - which breaks down charts of daily intake for calories, carbs, sodium, cholesterol, fats, sugars, fiber, and protein. the trainer also checks on it, which is definitely making me more conscious of what I eat.
So I say it is money well spent.

Well I made it to the gym yesterday. Yeah me!! I won't go today cause I am sore. My goal is three times this week. Which I will hit. I had no self control for dinner last night. My dh decided to make rolls to serve with the homemade chicken veggie soup. I had not one but two rolls. I have no self control with homemade bakery anything. It wasn't a total loss though. I didn't have any snacks after dinner. I did go over on my grain portions for the day but was under on protein. So I was a little over on calories for the day.

I am going to jump in here even though I don't want to loose any weight (kind of the anti-weight loss post). I lift free weights at least three days a week and hope to put on another 10-15 lbs before May/June if I can and try to consume as many healthy calories a day as I can. Lots of protein, fiber and carbs. After I reach 200lbs I plan on working in more cardio to lean out the muscle. Believe it or not, most days it's hard just to maintain my weight if I don't consume enough calories (I get sad when the scale goes down). I figure the quicker I can reach my weight goal, the quicker I can start to lean out. I know if I were to start running now, I'd never be able to gain any more weight. I started out with too much fat, have added on muscle to help burn the fat, and now don't want to stop gaining muscle. Maybe I should start a weight gaining thread

Actually, though the title of the thread is WEIGHT LOSS SUPPORT ... it's really HEALTHY EATING SUPPORT .... and would be a great chat thread for people seeking to maintain, to gain, or whatever. Our focus (hopefully) is on healthy eating and exercise ... and for some of us, weight loss is a happy byproduct!

I'd like to lose 36 lbs. That takes me to what I weighed 15 years ago. I felt strong and beautiful and I still have some of the tiny, tiny clothes to prove it. So this goal is a two-fer: if I am unable to lose the weight, I am going to get rid of those size 4 and 6 clothes that are cluttering up my closet. If I am able to lose the weight, I'll still get rid of the clothes, because they are no longer age appropriate.
I maintained my weight for several years, then started gaining slowly as life became more stressful, and I started eating to cope. In 2007, I changed to a less stressful but more sedentary job and moved closer to work (from 50 miles one way to 3 miles). I had more free time to exercise, but was (am) bored working in an office setting and ate to compensate, so weight gain slowed down, but did not stop. In 2008, I was overweight/borderline obese. I tried low calorie dieting and lost 26lbs in 2009. I stopped the diet in 2010, and gained back 6lbs.
I've got exercise in place already, so the thing I want to do differently in 2011 is rather than eating for fun, I'll eat to nourish my body. I'm hoping that one of the low carb diets like Atkins, will help me to make that happen.

Well, I didn't get any exercise in Wed or Thurs. Too much to do on those days, but I did stick to my eating plan!!! I was extremely hungry Wed night at around 9pm. So I had some fruit, crackers and cheese. I only ate until I wasn't hungry anymore.
A quick tip: Get between 7 & 8 hours of sleep a night. It will help you know when you're not hungry any more. Nasty little ghrelin.

Great job Sharon!
I'm down another 2 pounds this week, bringing my total since last spring to 43.5 pounds.

Thanks. I got extra motivation when XF announced her departure, which has helped. A couple of my friends have talked about signing up for a sprint triathalon in the spring (I think the one they're looking at is like 1/4 m swim, 1 m run and 4 m bike ride). I'm really considering signing up with them, so I have something specific to work toward going forward, since my biggest problem to date has been getting around to exercising.

I haven't had any soda at all. I have been drinking green tea (unsweetened) and water. I have been eating smaller portions. I went jogging one day and walked a couple of other days.

That sounds like a great start -- if you stick with it, the pounds will come off. They took some time to show up, they'll take some time to go away.

J is right, Angel. you also don't want to make too many changes at once. You'll find it too restrictive. Reader's Digest had a Change One plan a few years back...you make one change a week. Yes, the weight loss will be slow, but you'll be able to stick with it and make some life style adjustments that you can live with. I like the foods on South Beach, so I could do that for a while. And I've even made some of them permanent. No way could I do Atkins. I wouldn't last 3 meals. as far as liking food...why do you think I have to exercise EVERY DAY???

Peach..but but...I don't LIKE to exercise. (picture that me rolling on the floor throwing a temper tantrum!) Ugh. I am going to have to actually exercise aren't I? Stupid 30's. I just found a Payday Candy bar hiding in my closet...I don't know how old it was, but I ate it.
