I want to want to want to run...but I die just running to my mailbox. My husband is a runner. He has done 3 marathons and I can't even get to the stop sign.
I don't really know how to learn to like to work out. Yes, I like the way my body looks when I work out, but I hate actually having to do it. I hate how my body hurts after a workout.
Ugh. I need to figure out something here or I am going to start looking like my mother.

Don't run then Angel. If you don't like, you will not be motivated to do it. Have you taken a spin class? Or a zumba class? Keep experimenting until you find something you like to do.

I have tried Zumba and I seriously wanted to stab my brain with an ice pick 10 minutes in.
I LOVE yoga and pilates, but the gym near me doesn't offer it. Well they offer pilates, but every time I have shown up to do that class the instructor has canceled.
My gym is crappy. I need to cancel that membership and drive to the other gym that actually has the stuff I want. It is further away though.
I do have a million different work out videos, but I can't even seem to stick with those. I don't get where my lack of motivation comes from. UGH.

Save on the gym membership. Get a tape/cd and a mat and be self taught.

do you like music, Angel? I love listening to my MP3 when I workout. I have 3 Firm workout DVDs that I use at home. This is the series I have a Pilates DVD that I love...but it took me several tries to find a good one. I like spin class and I'll probably take the Body Pump class again. I never have been fond of running, and I'm not good at it. It just seems to give the best results (and I like to challenge myself). I also use the free weights & the machines at the Y. Three seasons of the year, I ride my bike outside. just keep trying until you find something you don't dislike and maybe you'll manage to find an exercise you actually enjoy. what about taking your dog for some long walks?

Angel I know you said you have a bunch of dvds but if you have on demand with cable check out the exercise tv stuff. I've found some stuff I like on there. And then if I don't like it I just don't do it again. Helps mix it up without buying all the dvds.

I used to do a body sculpting class that I loved. But then I got pneumonia and by time I got better (2 months) they no longer offered that class.
I do like to bike ride, but unfortunately Michigan is really cold right now. I do bike ride and swim when it is warm out.
I wish we lived near a Y. I live in a small town and we only have the one crap gym I will probably just try to go back to doing my workout videos and taking my pooch for walks. I won't be able to go for long walks with him though because of the snow. But we can go around the block.

Ok, so I have pulled out all of my workout videos. I have the beginners P90 system that is still in the plastic wrap (yes I KNOW I am pathetic). I am looking through the program to see what is all involved.
I have also started tracking my calories with Sparkspeople. This morning I had 1 scrambled egg, 2 pieces of bacon(don't you judge me! I usually have 4 pieces so I am doing better), 1 piece of whole wheat toast. Basically, I cut what I normally eat in half.

I'm signed up at Spark, but they assigned me a diet plan. I don't eat half of the stuff on the daily menus. I need to take the time to figure out what I did wrong. All I wanted was to do what you're doing...keep track of food intake.

Peach you can enter your own food. Or Mollymouser over on SmartSpend recommends caloriecount.about.com/What type of stuff don't you eat that Sparks recommends?

Last time I was at the gym was the Friday before Thanksgiving. I did something there that took out what remained of the cartilage in my hip. So no exercise until after I get a new hip and heal.
I need to put my gym membership on hold until I start physical therapy.

And I HATE needing them.
The 80 tablets I got before I came out here is going to need to be refilled before I come back for surgery next month.

I think my body's wired wrong. Painkillers besides mega ibuprofen don't seem to work on me.

Peach you can enter your own food. Or Mollymouser over on SmartSpend recommends caloriecount.about.com/What type of stuff don't you eat that Sparks recommends? I don't eat canned tuna or salmon; I don't eat anything with mayo; don't care for eggs usually. I have been eating Egg Beaters lately. I tried doing some exchanges on the program, but it just didn't seem very user friendly. I still have my WW books, so I could go back to keeping track of points.

Moon created a healthy living subforum. Politically Incorrect then asked me to move this thread here.

Angel, Have you tried an elliptical? I hate, hate, hate, hate to run. Even as a kid I hated it. This is my solution. It burns more calories than just walking and is pretty easy on the knees. I also wear a body monitor most of the time. It measures my activity levels, how many steps I take, how many calories I burn, how much I sleep. When I use it the way it's meant to be used, it's a very valuable resource. I lost 15 pounds between July and September. Then in October I became very busy and miserable at work and completely lost my focus. And gained 9-10 punds back. I keep mine in the basement by the washing machine. When I'm really on top of my game, I work out every morning and the laundry is always done.

It's funny -- I have a bad knee (had surgery on it several years ago) -- ellipticals, which are supposed to be great for the joints, kill my knee like nothing -- I'm better off running on concrete.

I just can't justify the gym membership right now. We've been going to the high school track. There's the bleacher stairs there also. I've got the Wii Fit Plus I use for yoga and ab work.

There's the bleacher stairs there also. I'm so jealous!!!!! I love to run bleachers. Around here, they are all behind locked gates I do know a coach in the next county. I need to ask him if there are any bleachers there I can get to. I was impressed with the crowd at the Y this morning. About 30 people waiting for the doors to open. They've also added the capability for members to be able to reserve a spot in a class, so I should be able to call in Monday for them to save a spot for me in spin class

on your jogs you could incorporate interval training...once you're warmed up, sprint all out for a certain time period, then slow to jog, then repeat...
like j, i have a bad knee, but i can't take the pounding of running so i use a bike & elliptical...interval training transformed my cardio workouts...

did one of my zone & tone w/cardio workouts this morning. Meeting for a run this afternoon. as far as variety, try a spin class. Lots of people really like Zumba (never tried it, but I don't think it's for me). I also get some good ideas from these sites: www.active.com/ and fitbie.msn.com/

May I please take a moment here to whine... I woke up in the middle of the night with a severe attack of tendonitis in my left elbow. I can barely move the whole arm without tears running down my face. I WILL get on the elliptical today, but it even hurts to breathe. Forget any other kind of workout, though.

Bummer, Malarky!!! Not fun at all.
There's the bleacher stairs there also.
I'm so jealous!!!!! I love to run bleachers. Around here, they are all behind locked gates I do know a coach in the next county. I need to ask him if there are any bleachers there I can get to. That happened in the last town I lived in when the high school built their new football stadium. Are there baseball/softball fields with good running bleachers? For me, those were not locked up, while the football stadium is.

Chloe - the only bleachers around here that I can get to (that I know of) are aluminum. No way am I going to attempt that! did a different zone & tone workout this morning. Meeting for a run again this afternoon, then probably a leg workout at the Y.
