Welcome back, Weezy! DS has summer school right now. It definitely helps, so he doesn't fall behind in his school skills over the summer. We're also in the process of setting up more therapy for him, but it's slow going, & I've got a feeling things won't be starting up until fall. I've always suspected I suffer from SAD, although I've never had the official evaluation. I just HATE winter. The short days (and living in the midwest just seems to make it worse). I do seem to do better with plenty of light, or if all else fails, a big project to distract me from how much I dislike going to bed in the dark, & waking up again in the dark....

I'm new here but i have a question ... If you suspect someone you care about is depressed , how do you help her or him based on your own experience with it ?
what would you consider intrusion ?

Thanks for sharing that Mitten. It always helps to hear inspiring stories about what helps others. Right now my depression is really in high gear. It is so hard for people who have never been through it to understand exactly how hard it is dealing with day to day life. It really helps me to read all the info and suggestions y'all give on here. Thanks.

Just be supportive and caring of them. Never attack them for feeling down and etc. A lot of times you just have to walk away and let that person let it run it's course, ya know. Maybe suggest some type of therapy if he/she is open to that also. Each individual deals with their depression differently. It's really a difficult thing to pinpoint on how to help that person deal with it. There are so many different ways, but basically it is up to the individual, what he/she will do to dig herself out. I hope everything works out for whatever situation may be talking about. Lots of love and making that person know they are loved, is very important.

I would just say being supportive is the main thing. And, maybe pointing the way to help and helping that person understand that there is help available and they don't have to feel like that forever.

How ya doing today Femme?
Last day of day camp for DS#1. Next week hoping to get to my dad's boat again and one more outing.
Busymom: DS#2 is done with summer school but he still has Fraser in the afternoons. Things will be real challenging in a couple of years when he will only have 3 days of summer school for 5 weeks.
On a plus note DS#2 has started talking more with some small sentences and words appropriately. Also got him in the community pool and walking on the bottom of it. I have the scars to prove it! He scratched the heck out of my back when I was insisting he try the first few times.

Good evening, Mitten. Still having a rough time but today seems somewhat better than yesterday. This depression is sort of like a roller coaster ride and it can take a toll on ya. Couldn't even eat for a few days, but I did eat better today. Hardly do I ever get that bad, that I won't eat anything but I did yesterday. I'm praying things will get better soon. I hope you are doing well.

Hi all.
Not been feeling my best lately. I just feel so worn out physically and mentally. But I will keep putting one foot in front of the other.

I know how hard that can be. I have been struggling with the same, exact thing lately. Have a hug and some karma. I hope you get to feeling better.

Hey all! Been busy with the kids. DS#1 is at over night camp for the first time, I pick him up tomorrow. DD is dealing with an ear infection, and we don't have insurance for her or DS#1 oh that is fun. I am going to see if the kids qualify for some programs that will backdate through the beginning of the month as I have to take her back in. So hard to see your kids in pain. We can't get the two on DF's insurance until Dec, long frustrating story but man the health insurance system in the country sucks.
Anyways doing okay but unfortunately I am gaining weight 7lbs this summer so far. I hope to change that but honestly I have been saying that since I lost a ton of weight then found out I was pregnant with DD and DS#2 has autism. Every time I try to do something DD takes over or something happens. So frustrating but I will not give up.
Glad to see you all here and I am wishing good thoughts for all of you!

sug: How much vit D did you take? I took 5000 IUs over the winter and it helped some. My sister took something like 9000 IUs for 12 weeks. I took 7000 IUs over that same 12 weeks. My sister is 5 foot 10 inches and I'm 4 foot 6 1/2 inches. I have personally found that I have to take everything in smaller doses cause of my size. Try also Magnesium, B Vitamins & Omega 3, heavy on the EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) over the DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). When I say heavy on the EPA, something like 500mg of EPA to 25mg of DHA. I find natural products better for me personally.

Man, I have been aching and hurting so bad lately with my PMS that Ibu's just don't seem to help. I think it's time for me to go back to the Dr. and see what he suggests. My legs and feet just ache constantly. I wish i knew exactly what it is my body needs to feel better.

That can happen if you spend long times sitting in one place (especially in front of the TV or computer) without getting up and moving around/stretching every 1/2 hour or so. If you fall into a sedentary lifestyle, it can also lead to depression. Even just plain old walking (especially outdoors in the sun & fresh air) helps the joints, muscles, and moods.

Yeah this is why I have my Bosu Trainer and BodyBlade right behind my computer chair. I zip around and jump up onto the Bosu every so often. Plus when I'm sitting at my computer I flex my ankles back and forth, like pumping them.

How do you all keep motivated? Lately, the weather has been pretty dreary and i feel a bit stuck in a rut. What do you do to keep your batteries charged?

Hiya Shooby! It is raining "cats & dogs" here today, so it's rather dreary here too. I've started walking again, and that seems to cheer me up (not to mention, it's helping me lose some pounds I'd regained). On a gloomy day, I'll often bake (but, of course, that won't help my diet). Let's see, what else. Reading, prayer. Maybe a little window shopping (if you can go to the mall without spending big $$$). What are some of your interests? One of my oldest friends, who has gotten thru a couple of nervous breakdowns which required hospitalization, has found any type of needlework to be very soothing. And, she can do a lot of different things: knit, crochet, quilt, etc. This girlfriend has real talent!

I seem to jump into various hobbies whole hog. For awhile, i was really into playing the guitar. I taught myself to play and even joined the Church band, though i was really terrible! It was fun and i spent hours playing and learning and practicing. But, i have some carpal tunnel type issues and i also broke a finger playing basketball so, that isn't very productive anymore. I LOVE sports. But, finding other women who want to play sports is impossible. We did have a small group of women who played basketball on Sat morning. It was rough cuz i was playing with some 20somethings but i think they were surprised i could still bang around under the boards and hit a 3 point jump shot. I have been working out at the gym and walking but the last few weeks i have had a lot going on with my elderly mom so haven't had much time for that. I love to cook as well. I bought myself a KitchenAid Artisan and absolutely LOVE it. BEST purchase i have made in years. My DD and i really have fun making bread, cookies, etc. i bought the pasta attachements and we made some pretty sad looking ravioli the other day.

Nice purchase, Shooby! I think it'd be fun to play with all of those attachments, even if the food didn't turn out quite the way you'd planned. I used to play tennis when I was younger, but it's difficult to find anyone who'd like to play now. Of course, we're at the "raising kids & taking care of parents" stage. I worked with a great guy some years back who was in his 60's, who played a pretty good game of tennis. When he heard I used to play, he encouraged me to take it up again when I was an empty-nester. He was always saying "you're never too old"! ;D I think that's AWESOME you're playing BB, & with the younger set. (Don't get hurt, now!) I have a close relative with carpal tunnel, & I know it really limits what she is able to do. Get yourself a brace, if that will be helpful for you.

I try to take some "me" time. Whether it's a quick Solitaire game on the computer, or catch up on my reading.

I have something brewing in my mind for a long time so let me ask - Is addiction (of anything) a form of mental illness?

That is an interesting question. I would say there are mental, emotional, spiritual components and obviously physical consequences as well.

That would depend on what kind of drug you are speaking about. There are lots of things that are addictive. Caffeine is addictive, but I highly doubt that would make someone a mentally ill person if they drink it. There are chemical imbalances in some individual's brains, along with hereditary factors that would cause a Dr. to feel the need to prescribe certain mental health meds to balance out the chemical imbalance that some people have. It depends on the individual, but it doesn't make them "mentally ill" just because they need medication that is prescribed, as long as it isn't abused in any way. I can't speak for any illegal drugs...I wouldn't know.

Hi Femme. I can, probably not necessary though as the original question seems rather incompetent. 'Addiction' refers to a range of conditions -including physical dependency; exactly how is physical dependency supposed to be a mental illness?…
