I don't tan, I bleach. Yup. Same here. My stepmother, who is naturally olive complected and dark, would REFUSE to buy sunscreen or sunblock for me and my sisters--all of us quite pale--because she said all we needed was a "base tan" and then we wouldn't sunburn. It never happened. I can remember looking in the mirror when I was 17 years old and seeing wrinkles/lines on my forehead (where I often burned as a kid since I never had bangs), a result of all that sunburning. My youngest sister used to get half-dollar sized blisters (i.e., 2nd degree burns) from any amount of sun exposure as a kid. She would lie in bed and cry at night because the burns hurt so much. And stepmother STILL refused to buy sunscreen. In my opinion, if an 8 year old girl gets 2nd degree burns from being in the sun for an hour, you put sunscreen on her. Apparently, my stepmother disagreed.

+/- 20 years ago, people were basting themselves with tanning oils and literally frying their skin under the sun. The manufacturers didn't have SPF numbers on packaging, and skin cancer wasn't even being considered. Now people from those decades who tanned a lot are looking much older than those who didn't.
