thicknthin Message #120 - 11/13/09 06:00 PMA friend of mine invested into a Canadian mining co. a few years ago. They are currently mining in China and doing very well. His 10,000.00 investment has net him a five-fold return so far.....I`m tempted.

If you spend so much of your effort taking exception to those who attack and argue then why bother to keep visiting this message board or maybe these problems are not "Them" but "You"...

OK so did anyone buy the corn futures, and if so, how did they do if they're willing to share personal returns data?

Did anyone invest in corn futures or heating oil? Value-Boy??? RDT??? Corn is at 347 and change. How did this compare to last year? In the world of commodities, is it relevant or driven by seasonality, etc.?

No but I did stay at a Holiday Inn three weeks ago in Boston and was nursing a huge corn on my right toe from walking and had someone step on my foot in a parade down memory lane...

LOL I don't even know when you would invest in corn futures, as in the time of season, but I assume the Fall. I wish Stay Put would post on this thread to explain this stuff.

I don't even know how to buy corn futures, LOL. It's a completely separate division of the NYMEX than the COMEX (PMs), right?

Trading commodities is not for the novice but as this post by oots details it is for those who are Commodities traders and live and breath these markets each and every day so they are up to date on any changes to the commodiities which are usually a quick trade by pros.

traelinO, I do not follow Fibonacci, Gann lines, Stochastics..............the people who make money in those systems, are those that sell them to the general public. When any of those systems actually get it right, it is when even a blind man couldn't help but get it right. Say to yourself a thousand times; "Save for the governments total manipulation, Commodities are a matter of Supply and Demand." If ANYTHING threatens to affect either Supply or Demand, you will know how to invest accordingly. When you are done saying this a thousand times, say it another thousand, and then again, and again until it is seared in your brain.

I heard Russia isn't exporting anymore grains this year, is this true? Also, is this year shaping up to be a decent year for heating oil? It's not a commodity I follow religiously.

tough times do not last-- tough people do Message #141 - 11/12/10 04:40 PM
Toughest thing in the world to trade. You have professionals who have made these markets their life's work on the other side of the trade and the futures contracts are wasting assets besides. And the traders know when you have to get out if you invest via ETFs.
Many intelligent people like commodities right now, but they still put the fear of God into me.

How are pork bellies doing? I know cotton has been doing well, but everyone needs swine, too.

oots Message #143 - 12/20/10 05:46 PM
Trae, pork bellies will probably be discontinued. There are 3 open contracts in the Feb. 11 contract, that's it. 3 longs/3 shorts. They are done. Cotton made a new contract high today (March 11) @ 1.54 per pound. It was at $ 1.10 per pound the week before Thanksgiving. That's a $ 22,000 move per contract in 4 1/2 weeks. Swine probably should be sold for the 1st quarter of 2011. Weights are up about 3% from last year. That equates to a backlog for slaughter probably through April. The grains are on a tear to the upside and especially with dry conditions in Argentina they should go higher. This will make for higher pork and beef prices come summer and beyond. The Fed's monetary policy has totally propped up the stock market. They want Americans to "feel richer" yet the FBI have been making arrests for insider trading over the last few weeks. In order to trade the grains, the meats, cotton, sugar, OJ, etc. you have to keep your eyes glued to the stock market. If the stock market goes into sell off mode, all the above commodities will head south. By the way, ONE HUGE POINT, China has 1.3 BILLION people. Ten years ago most of them were poorer than people living in U.S. ghettos. Their economy is on a tear to the upside and that means income and standards of living. That along with a weaker U.S. dollar, weather, etc. has revived commodities in the last 6 months. DANGEROUS, DANGEROUS game where fortunes can be made or lost in short period of time.
