Last night is defintely one to remember. I lucked out an the tornado did not here where I am but 1/4 mile away is a much different story. On the way to work this morning I drove through a part of town that was hit and it really is a scene out of a movie. Hope my fellow MA peeps made it through OK Who would have thought that Springfield would have ever been hit by a tornado??? That was crazy to see!! I was right in the middle of it and man . I hope everyone else in this area is ok!!

good to see all of you in MA's tornado alley checking in. watching all the coverage so far has been a bit eerie. I'm just east of Worcester, but would have been in the way had the funnels kept their shit together. I'm quite happy they didn't!
I started a thread last night, over on EE - "tornadoes in MA?!?" if you'd like to check in with a couple more posters in our area.

Shoutouts through Message #873
idlecrush: Congrats on paying off that 2nd CC! Even though you have another “round” with SL’s, at least you won’t be paying interest to a CC company.
Munjoyhill: Yeah! Two updates in this round! Patience – you’ll get there, and we’ll be here to cheer you along.

h'mmm.... vampires... vampires... Frank Langella in Dracula, with the white shirt open as he seduces his future queen... and James Marsters, as Spike, the Billy Idol wannabe vampire in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And certainly there's David Boreanaz as Angel... But Spike, oh, yeah, I could go for that bad boy!! So... I met with the bankruptcy attorney this afternoon... and next month, I'm going to start the process... gad...

$100K Club Summer Challenge! Summer is here and can make it harder to focus on the debt game, but I know we can do it! To give us a little more motivation I would like to challenge the $100K club to pay off $100K this summer. It would be like graduating 1 member all the way to $0! Let's set the challenge from June 1 to August 31. We currently have 27 racers (though I expect we may lose 2 more this week) so that would be an average of $3,700 per member for the whole challenge. I know there are some that can pay much more then that, and some (like myself) that number will be hard to meet, but let's all do our very best and stay on track for the summer! So our current total for the $100K Summer Challenge as of 6/5/11 is 3 updates totaling $3684.68! Remaining to meet goal is $96,315.32!

bankergurl: you scared the bejeesus outta me. When I first read that, I thought you meant: we should EACH pay off $100k; then I realized that you meant AS A GROUP, we should try to pay off a TOTAL OF $100k. I'm in!! I will do my part!!

The challenge sounds fun. Count me in. I'm may have to cut back a bit on what I'm putting toward debt, but should still be able to contribute quite a bit.
Thanks again to for posting the updates!!! I love the smilies!! They really do motivate me!!!
I hope everyone has an awesome summer!!! Lots of fun, but no added debt!!!! And, lots of debt repayment!!!! I really do need to get the noose of debt off my neck. Sometimes I feel like I'm choking it feels so tight. My brother says I do it to myself. I should loosen up my debt payments. I told him if I did that then it would take forever for this to change. By putting what I can towards debt, my debt freedom day is closer!!!! It is hard sometimes and I probably cut myself a bit close, but if I can pay off our camp in December, and then our apartment building less than 2 years after that, then it will be worth it.

Bankergurl - an interesting summer challenge to collectively pay off $100,000 for our group. I'm in . . . but I just figured out what I anticipate paying off for June, July and August, and I don't think $3,700 is doable for me, but am happy to contribute what I can. Unfortunately since I'm at the beginning of my mortgage payments, they're mostly interest, not much principal, so it's not knocking down my debt that much. Also, I updated on June 2, your 100,000 list has me listed as late May update.
Lark - I was wondering what was happening with your situation, so how did your bankruptcy appointment go?
Wudnit - You have paid off so much of your four properties!

Hiya Peg - the attorney is going to start the filing process on July 1. Then I have 45 days after that, we'll go into court, get before a bankruptcy judge, who determines what is valid for my cost of living expenses.
Based on my current status, he thinks I'm going to be asked to pay about $800 a month for my unsecured debt, which is about what I pay for it now, the difference being it will be interest-free for five years. After five years, the credit card debt will be zero, the student loans will continue, but obviously at a considerably reduced outstanding balance.
Basically, he thinks it's going to eradicate about $30K of my current (viable) debt, plus we're going to put in some sort of stop to the lien, which will reduce that one considerably as well. What makes me cringe is, I have to pay him and the court fees over the next six weeks, and when I pointed out that $1,500 isn't exactly in my budget, he said I have to stop my payments to Discover, Chase, and Goodyear, and direct them all to call him for details on my bankruptcy. Which means he'll field everything, but it still just makes me sick.... *sigh*
It's going to change my numbers, overall, but I won't know anything about anything until I got into court... some time in August or September...

Hello everyone! After finishing my first race in August 2010, DH and I are back with race #2. Because.... *drum roll please*... we bought a house! From the day we decided to "casually start looking" to the day we were standing in the house watching the inspector do his thing, it was less than 2 full weeks. Talk about a whirlwind! From the time we found the house to the day we closed, it was less than 2 months. *phew!* We found a HUD house, in great shape, overlooking a creek, with a fenced in back yard, 3 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, 1 garage, gorgeous kitchen, open living/dining room, and an awesome 3 season room off the dining room. It's in a quiet single-family neighborhood, that we would never have been able to afford if it was full price. There are various projects that we'll have to address, but we are thrilled! We took a loan from my husband's deferred comp (which he is no longer paying into) to cover part of the down payment - the interest rate is locked in at about 0.75% lower than our mortgage rate, so it made sense. We also took a small amount out of some of my investments to assist as well. My goal is to have both the deferred comp loan and the investments paid back (including an additional 10% in "interest" to ourselves) by December 2012. We closed less than a month ago, so the second bi-weekly payment will come out this Friday. The deferred comp loan is a monthly payment, and that's my first goal - we can pre-pay it, however, whatever we pre-pay has to cover the remainder of the loan in full (we can't just send an extra $100/month). So, the goal is to have that loan paid off by June 1, 2012. So anyway... I am back with a new race. We are thrilled... but tired of painting and living out of boxes. Tobinikui: 06/06/2011 $198.70 (05/13/2011, $114,800.00, ?) Account | Starting Balance | Interest Rate | 5/27/2011 | Decrease | % Paid Off | | Mortgage | $107,000.00 | 4.99% | $106,917.93 | $82.07 | 0.08% | | Def. Comp. Loan | $7,800.00 | 4.25% | $7,683.37 | $116.63 | 1.50% | | Total | $114,800.00 | | $114,601.30 | $198.70 | 0.17% | |
(Can someone tell me what the end of my tagline should be? WIRR has gone through so many iterations now, that I don't know anymore!) Thank you! I have to say, I'm not thrilled to be back in debt, but I was reading even once I paid everything off. This is a great community of support and awesome energy, so... thanks.

lark - Sorry to hear about the bankruptcy decision. I know it is hard for you to do. Just let us know when you need to adjust your numbers. tobinikui - Congrats on the new house! The tagline for your first update should be: Tobinikui: 6/6/11 $114,601.30 (05/13/11 $114,800.00 NPT30)

UPDATE: justpayit: 6/8/2011 $19,149 (11/22/2007 $91585 N791,NE329
Lark: Hang in there and know that many others have faced the same. We're getting ready to sell our house in a short sale and will file bankruptcy ourselves if it doesn't go through. We just have to keep moving forward and focus on the positives! I just watched a PBS show on people who've lived into their 90s and are still happy and healthy. Not a single person mentioned financial success as a reason! It was much more about simple things, like taking care of others and doing things you love to do. ... Stuff we already know, but it was a great reminder for me.

thanks, rpprt! justpayit, thanks for updating. I saw your post in the $5.5-24k club thread too. Minnesotagirl does her updates from the regional threads, so you only need to post your numbers once. I will be doing a regional update this weekend when I get home from my training class. keep up the great work!
