I haven't been posting on these new boards, but for the sake of closure, I wanted to give my last update...exactly three years since I started!
Montrose: 05/23/2011 $0 (5/23/08 $44,670.80 NE2381)
Summary: (sorry, I couldn't figure out to insert the tables) car loan_____4.75%______$5213.90___8/16/2008 CC_________0%-9.99%___$11076.00__2/3/2009* HEL________ 8.23%______$19271.90__8/7/2009* HELOC______5.25%-4.24%_$9109.00___5/18/2011
Total: $44,670.80
*CC balance was transferred to HELOC when the 0% expired. HEL was also transferred to take advantage of low HELOC rate. I've been paying down the HELOC ever since.

Thank you all so much!
I made some whopping mistakes in 2007 - got a new job then bought a new condo [HEL] close to job; renovated the old house [HELOC] prior to renting to a professional scam artist tenant who trashed the place and had to be evicted [HELOC]. Then my job security became uncertain - I was still in the one year probationary period. I was just so scared ALL the time and felt like i had to do something. Usually this meant transferring balances around [CC - 0% intro] and paying minimums.
You guys helped me to stop treating my debt like a family pet that I had to keep around as Michelle Singletary would say. I'm down to two 1st mortgages, one of which is an ARM, but I've got some breathing room now. I was never very good at posting beyond my updates, even on the old boards, but I'm really grateful for all your support.

turtling now for the summer, with only 2 accounts left carrying balances. one is low-interest for the life of the balance, the other is at 0% until December. I'll pay it off by then, but I'm going to enjoy myself a little while it's nice out. Ok It's getting closer to July 1st Layoff Day--I've been trying not to think about it--hoping and praying that I will not be on the list of the first round--They are eliminating some titles and doing bump and retreats which for me is very bad because I have one of the lowest titles so they can bump me out I have only been with the County for five years--They are not counting my prior service with the School Dist 10 yrs--So according to civil service law I'm in trouble--I am in process of getting my resume together I'm lost because I haven't worked private sector in years--Need Advice--Should try sending Letters of interest to other County departments which are not targeted for layoffs--or try the School Districts again (also civil service, same retirement plan) or do I leave Civil service altogether and try for private sector.

Sorry to hear...I am civil service, county government employee too and we are facing many of the same possible cuts. If I were you, I'd talk to either your union rep or human resources to clarify the bumping policy. The way you describe it is not the way it is here. You can only bump someone in your same title, or a title you have previously held, so, not ANYONE can bump you just because they have seniority. My title is pretty specialized and there are only a few in the whole county (4 of which are in my program) so if they cut our program, which is a good possibility in an effort to save money...the preventative programs are always to first to get cut! Talk about short sighted....anyway...Even though I have over 11 years, I wouldn't likely be aple to "bump" anyone because there wouldn't be any of the same titled positions left. Make sense? I'm not sure what your title is, but it's something I would certainly clarify before much longer. Not sure, if I were you, I'd look at the school districts either. They are facing even more cuts than county government. It's sad . I will think good thoughts for you!

Update Munjoyhill 5/25/11 $143,616.97 ($155,340.30) 6/18/09 NE629, NEU 301 Debt | Starting Amt | 5/25/2011 | Difference | HELOC | $30,340.30 | $19,990.64 | $10,349.66 | Mortgage | $125,000.00 | $123,626.33 | $1,373.67 | Totals | $155,340.30 | $143,616.97 | $11,723.33 |
HELOC, have paid off 34% Mortgage, have paid off 1.1% Have paid off 7.5% of the overall debt. Okay, I am pleased, my HELOC is now under $20,000 and in the "teens"! Somehow this seems like such a milestone, that the amount I owe is in the teens. I still have a long way to go, I do wish I had been a little more aggressive several years ago to pay this off, but it's only shrinking, and that's good! And my mortgage amount, sigh. I have paid 7 months of mortgage payments, plus I throw about $20-$25 extra at it each week when I get paid, and I've only knocked off 1.1% of the balance. I knew this when I bought the condo, and I'm still pleased with my purchase, but when I look at the numbers and see how slowly it's being paid down, I get a bit impatient. I have a question for you ladies. I want to sell my house, I owe the $19,990.64 on it, which is the HELOC. My son lives in it right now, plus he has a roommate, and I get rent from both of them. Not much, but enough to pay utilities, HELOC, insurance and property taxes. My plan is to sell the house next year once my son is done school, pay off the balance of the HELOC, and whatever is left over I can pay off my condo or put a big chunk towards it, depending on what I get for the sale amount. My question: is this a good plan? Or should I take the profit and invest it? I am concerned that if I pay off my HELOC and mortgage all in the same year that I'll get slammed with taxes since I will no longer have interest deductions. Your thoughts?

Congrats, montrose! I'm super proud (and jealous) of you!
It'll be awhile till we're debt free, but I do have the good news to report that yesterday DH made his last payment on his truck. We are now completely free of auto loan payments for the first time in 7 yrs! And when added to having paid off our SLs last year, we are pretty happy! Of course, the house stuff we're doing, on top of the CC debt we already had, will take us a few years to pay off, but at least one more monthly bill is gone. Now DH can start using that $ as a snowball on the one CC he carries that has been accruing charges for the house.

Congratulations montrose! foxybrown Maybe he knew how "foxy" you were! munjoyhillIMHO - If you do decide to sell your house, I would get that EF where you're comfortable. (How is the job?) Then put as much towards that mortgage as possible. Don't think about your interest deduction, you're only getting, what, 15-25% of the interest you're paying. By putting a chunk (or paying off) that mortgage, there won't be any interest for the bank to take from you each month! You could up your W-4 withholdings or just put the amount you were paying in interest into a bank account earmarked for taxes.

Constanz---Thanks for the info you are right about bump and retreat--I work for department of Assessment--I have a assessor aide title, there are no lower in the assessor chain--a group of about 20 of us all same title were hired five years ago when they were trying to change the the assessment system--we were the last of the aides that were hired. Now our department is being targeted. I was never a real political person. I just went with the flow. I Love my job and will keep praying my title is safe. Thanks for the Good thoughts.
