Actually, I was doing my bills last night (ah, the IRS, the Great Equalizer, clean out the files, shred the garbage, put away the next year's data...), and I totaled out my schtuff, BUT - I haven't posted it. So, I need to do that tonight when I get home.

So I signed up for Mint.com a few months back and it will send me alerts for my cards. I got an alert today that a fee had been applied to my bank of america card of 59 dollars. When I called them, they said they sent me a letter with new terms and conditions saying that with my balance and interest a 59 dollar fee would be charged once per year to have my card. I've never received a letter from them (that I know of - I always open that stuff) so I told them to send the letter again. They said I would have to close my card out in order not to be charged the fee. What are the pros and cons of closing the card. Will they require the entire balance to be paid in full when I close the card? I am so beyond pissed right now. idlecrush

idle Pros: No fee. One less CC. Cons: Lower debt-to-available balance ratio(if credit score is important.) Usually if you close a CC with a balance, you will be required to continue paying along the same terms. (No immediate amount due.) But, I would ask first. What is your current balance? Credit limit? Do you have other cards with available credit? (if credit score is important.) Karma point for you - you need it today!

No, you will not have to pay it in full - you will have the same payoff terms you have now. And as rrrpt points out - one less card. And they'll the fee. They're not really security blankets when they create such insecurity for us, now, are they?

I made the payment in full to my Discover Card last night! So bye bye to one high interest rate card! My question is - This is the card that I have had the longest. Since 2003 when I started college. From what I understand how long you have credit cards also matters towards your score. The next one I got was 3 years later so it doesnt have as much history. Is it worth it to just keep this card with my father so that I continue to have the history or should I just cancel it all together knowing I am NEVER going to use it again?

kristin, I'm not sure how much stock the bureaus will place on a card that had a co-signer. kind of like a co-signer on a loan, y'know? that said, if there's no annual fee, there really isn't a reason to close it. it helps your overall ratio of balance-to-available credit to keep it open. congrats on the zero!

ok....this stuff is all going to post tomorrow, but it's already out of my checkbook. I'm ecstatic about the number, so I'm posting it all now! the payout for all that unvested stock hit my checking account on Friday morning. it cleared today, so I'm using it for payments tomorrow (earliest delivery date available). I had already used my tax refund to take a chunk out of the AmEx. Friday's deposit paid off the rest plus the SMCU card, and put $1000 into the EF that's been hovering at $200 for a long time. oh, and I added a little extra to the Citi payment so that I could say: I'm finally under $10K!! Here is April's update about a week late. It's been a busy couple of weeks. My sister had her baby 2 weeks ago. A boy - 5 lbs 8 oz. He's a little peanut! All of the baby shower expenses have been paid off so my numbers actually went down this month. Back under 50K!!! Update Munjoyhill 4/19/11 $144,407.74 ($155,240.30 6/18/09 NE 629, NEU 301) Debt | Starting Amt | 4/19/2011 | Difference | HELOC | $30,340.30 | $20,481.73 | $9,858.57 | Mortgage | $125,000.00 | $123,926.01 | $1,073.99 | Totals | $155,340.30 | $144,407.74 | $10,932.56 |
I am doing what Lark posted a few weeks ago, about paying a little bit extra each month. I could throw more at my mortgage and HELOC, but I am not, per the advice of my investment guy, I am saving anything extra in case something happens with my job. My goal is to have a year's worth of mortgage payments in the bank, just in case. But after I pay my bills, and if I have a little left over, I am paying a little bit more on my mortgage and HELOC. This month I paid $20 extra on my mortgage, although it hasn't cleared yet, but I will catch that update around May 1.

Well, I was able to pull all my figures together to properly post everything. I started out on the South region and then was directed to the NE region. Hopefully someone can tell me how to fix my table. hit 'quote' for the code, but all you were missing was the [/table] to close out the loop. oh, and once you get your table set with your headers, you can very easily just "quote" yourself the next time you make an update - just update the numbers. welcome.

I just wanted to post a quick update. Things have gone from bad to worse for us. DH's income is extremely unreliable as it's dependent on the weather since he works outside. With all the rain we've been having & the winter being as it was, his income was nowhere near what we budgeted. Also, they cut our pay 10% at my job in February, so we've been surviving on fumes the last couple months. It's gotten to the point where we are in a position that bankruptcy is our only option. I'm so heartbroken because I've worked so hard all my life to be in a position to always be able to provide for my family and now, I don't know how we're going to put food on the table next week, keep the mortgage up to date & pay for gas just to get to & from work.
We went to a bankruptcy lawyer last week to weigh our options. We are on the cusp of being able to file Chapter 7, but if worse comes to worst we're looking at 13, which I am completely ok with. As of today, I've never been late on any bill, I've always found a way to pay what I owe. It's a whole new world and I feel so defeated.
If anyone has any experience or advice with this type of situation, I'd really appreciate it. I'm facing a perspective I've never known before. Thanks for letting me rant.

Update: Kristin11: 4/20/11 $13,107.35 (12/31/09 $16,567.73 NEU8)
1. Domestications - $0 – No Change 2. Kohls - $148.78 – ($76.00) Decrease 3. Target Visa - $3,804.10 – ($448.84) Decrease 4. Discover - $0 – ($1,478.46) Decrease 5. Disney Visa - $1,279.53 – No Change 6. Shell Fuel Card - $0 – No Change 7. Macys - $0 – No Change 8. Sisters Loan - $516.00 – $36.00 Increase 9. Bethpage FCU - $5,358.94 – No Change 10. Aunts Loan - $2,000 – New Debt
So my debt went up a little bit since my last update in the end of March. Only $32.70 which is not bad considering how I am moving money around and by my normal end of April update things will have turned around anyway as I will be making payments to Disney, Bethpage and my Aunts Loan that would usually be shown in my monthly update. I should be under $13,000! My Aunt lent me the $2,000 interest free to help make things easier for me as she saw me stressing with the rise in gas prices. We signed a contract and everything so it is a legal loan. I used $1,478.46 to pay off the Discover card in full but intend to keep it open at least for a little while because it’s the card I have had the longest. I took an additional $400 and made a large payment to Target, which also has an extremely high interest rate. That left me with $121.54 that I still have in my checking account until I decide what to do with it. That is the reason that I have the slight increase because I borrowed more money then I have paid out as of right now. Having my Aunt do this for me has made me breathe a lot easier. Now I have to turtle along with my current payments until Kohls and 1 non racing card are paid off in July and then I can see where I want to snowball some of that money. Some of it will be going into savings and towards household bills. 3 more payments and I will have 2 more zeros! Well 1 racing zero! I hope to be down $4,000 total by the end of next month so I am going to be pushing myself a little more in May! Good luck to everyone!

OK. I am very upset.
I had a call from my attorney about the lien this collection agent is trying to impose. And guess what? Because I work in New Jersey, they can have a ruling which will garnish my wages.
He suggested I file for bankruptcy. Looking at my unsecured debt vs. my salary (which is considerably less than it was when I was consulting), he says it's probably my best bet.
I'm ready to cry...

lark - Have they already filed to have your wages garnished? I feel so sad.....don't they know how hard you are working to get this debt gone forever? Have you decided that you are going to file? No matter what choice you make, know that we are here to support you all the way.

I actually have an appointment with a bankruptcy attorney in the morning. I'm not sure what I'm going to do, but I don't know what else to do - according to my attorney, they can take up to half my paycheck, which would be... REAALLLLLYYY bad... argh...
