I'm not sure if anyone announced it but our Southern Dixies have been doing a great job eliminating debt. Between September and October we've had 3 winners: DeepinTx, Ffflex, and our newest, Goalofzero.
Come on over to our board and share in the celebration!

Hello, my name is nidena and I'm a credit using aholic. I fell off the wagon while I was deployed cause I couldn't pay cash for anything that I needed to purchase online. Since then, I have continued to use my credit card and very little of it has been for necessities. Shortly after I returned, one of my nieces moved in with me and then, two months after she got here, a second niece moved in. My grocery bill went from $150-$200/mo to just under $800/mo. We buy only fresh/frozen fruits and veggies; and lots of eggs, non-dairy milks (almond, soy, rice, coconut), cheeses, nuts, etc. I used my CC to pay for all of this as well as gas; sneakers for both girls cause they had none; a second bed frame; interview outfits for the girls cause they have only jeans and tees; and various other things. The floodgates have finally slowed to a trickle and we've reached the season of casseroles and other tasty hot meals that can be made to last for days on end. It's time for me to get back to cash and taking the CC out of my wallet. It's going to be a struggle but I'm tired of being in that spot of pay down the debt and see it rise back to the same level that it was before I made a payment. Ironically, I was debt free (except my house debt) last summer, right before I started prepping for deployment. I intend to be there again, before May 2014. My current CC balance is $8512.44. It's not my total racing debt but, ever since we changed to these new forums, I haven't been able to make a table and haven't been able to post my list--only my tagline. I'm also planning on reaching the $50k paid off by the end of 2013.

Nidina: Way to come up with a plan. We all have our bad times, it is how we deal with them that sets us apart. Trust me, we have two places to maintain including buy groceries at both (home and camp) and our bills sky rocket during spring and summer. I'm hoping to slow the money drain now that we will be closing up camp for the season (just in the time for the holidays!!). My next goal is to have our apartment mortgage paid off by 5/14. Maybe we can keep each other on track!!!

The CC has been removed from my wallet is in my desk drawer.

Nidena: Good for you!! I need to buckle down and look at things, I know our spending has been totally out of control lately, although I have continued with our debt payments. I am bound and determined to pay off our apartment mortgage by 5/14. Anything extra I can throw at it would certainly help, but the way I've been spending, there hasn't been any extra. Time to buckle down.

Well, not so hot news for us - our snowballing is effectively at a stand still. I went on vacation 9/27 to 10/8 and came back to find out I didn't have a job. The really shitty part? They knew they were going to do it before I left (the company is in serious financial trouble - ridiculous amount of mismanaging funds for years) but decided to wait until 2:30pm on the day I got back. They let me go through all the email I hadn't touched while on vacation (because stupid me was checking email several times a day & forwarding the "fires" to someone and answering the simple questions that I didn't need access to our systems for - several times a day via my phone & laptop) as well as all my voicemail & do everything that needed catching up on before calling em into the office to tell me! The nice thing to have done was let me go before vacation - maybe I could have really let go then and really enjoyed myself instead of worrying what was going on in my absence. So now I've filed for unemployment and I'm waiting - I've been looking for a job since January, as the writing has been at the wall for my previous job for a long time. I've been on just 1 interview since January, and it happened to be the day before I went on vacation. I won't hear anything back until probably the end of this month either way, and if I got it, it won't start until mid-November. I'm almost okay with being home through the end of the year - the Holidays don't take care of themselves - I'm sure you know what I mean. My husband officially launched his consulting company the day I was let go and he's already pretty much replaced my income. We'll be alright - unemployment & his 9 to 5 covers all of our bills with wiggle room. We are keeping his company income in a separate checking account without paying him right now, as we are still trying to accurately pinpoint the tax ramifications will be. C'est la vie - 1 step forward & 2 steps back. That's how it constantly feels.

So I did it! I paid off CC #3! It makes me feel good. This is even better than losing 10 lbs. It was a little tight there, but I managed. I am planning on being very aggressive the next few weeks to pay off BCC #2 by the end of the year. If I snowball the $200 I was paying to CC#3 on top of the $200 I am already paying, I would just need to make double payments the next few three months. With all of the overtime I have been picking up, I should be able to do this without cutting it close. Looking forward to coming into the home stretch of my race.

Congratulations Maryland Monroe!!!!
I love reading about the people who have won their races. This is exactly the motivation I need to continue on! For all of the winners, please keep posting updates on how you are staying debt free after the race, because I am afraid I may just start spending uncontrollably again.

dschmidt: sorry to hear about your situation. I just read an article about starting over, career-wise, in More magazine. Maybe there is a nugget or two in it that might help you. It's in the current issue--the one with Sarah Michelle Gellar on the cover.
meltingdebt: that ZERO looks fabulous on you!!

I am really, really motivated to stay out of debt because I want to retire debt free (completely free - no mortgage). I hope my resolve remains strong! When I have a moment of weakness, I think about how much longer I'll have to work to have whatever is tempting me, which makes it pretty easy to walk away. I have one non-racing card that's getting the current minimum monthly payment every two weeks. That should be completely gone in about three years, then all that money goes to the mortgage so I can RETIRE!!!

One more month and I should hit $100,000 PAID!! That will feel great! I realize that I've been on this board for 4 years. That is a long time to be dealing with debt. Of course, I was dealing with it for years before I even found this board. I have a plan and that plan shows me being completely debt free by December 2015: 25 months and counting!!! Would LOVE to have it happen sooner. I'm looking forward to being able to say that I will be debt free in less than 2 years! Amazing the mind games we play to motivate ourselves.

EF=$366.03A couple of balance transfers and a trip to Southeast Asia for three took place in the last month. The good news is that I am still below my original balance from February, and I had an awesome trip. The bad news it that I now have to pay for it. The balance transfers cost me 3%, but my interest bearing balance is down from my last update. I have another 0% expiring in January and another in April, so I am working to figure out how to handle that situation. Almost all of CC#1 is at 0% until 1/2015, and the increase on CC#5 is at 0% until 3/2015. CC#6 will be done next month. My strategy is to pay the minimum on the cards that are not costing me any interest and get rid of the interest-bearing balance on CC#1 and CC#4. I also put small Roth IRA contributions and EF deposits on auto-pilot. Happy Halloween! -movinonup

Got an offer from my bank today that they will match 50% of any additional payments made to my HEL, up to $6000, between 1 Oct 13 and 31 Oct 14. I think, even though I owe a few thousand $$ on my CC, that this is an offer that I should not let pass by. I owe only $25k on my HEL. If I maximize the offer, it would be down to $7k come November of next year. And we're a "Go" for the program!!

Update Crisde2bdebtfree—11/ 8/2013—$10,680.39--8/31/2010 $16,834 NEU286) Long Island NY
Congrats--Maryland Monroe--Wishing you all the best --
So--This is my best update ever!!! I must admit I am a bit proud of myself. The plan is to be debt free by March 2016--With this update i think I may be able to do it.--I have been at my job for a little over six months now. So for six months I lived on my unemployment budget and had the difference automatically deposited into my credit union account. My next update will be back to normal as I plan to go back on my unemployment budget again after the holidays. This Christmas is a cash only Christmas--
So i paid off CC2--which is a chase card--than i balance transfered my MasterCard--so I can get no interest for 15 months--that is why CC2 balance went up --I am working on the major cards first--then I will tackle store cards--It just feels so good to be almost under 10K--

Update:
antevasin: 10/1/13 $87,059.15 (8/20/08 $210,000.00 NE100)
Total amount remaining to pay back: $122,940.85
Total percentage paid: 41.46% Total percentage remaining: 58.54%
A bit late, October was a busy month. The first major school bill went into place so I was going to take a big hit against the repayment. However, I'll still continue to plug along, make payments, and continue to work towards the overall repayment.

Nidena, Munjoyhill, Hi all! I would like to join (again.) I realized that this is too big for me. I can't keep up in my brain!
The goal is 1) Keep clear records of expenses 2) Get a better handle on the long-term debt
Thanks for everyone's help! I'm in Maryland. Ronnyanna

Thank you, Rocky Mtn Saver! I'm so excited to post. We have a rental house now and I am bewildered by the business expenses (first year in business.) I think it should be easier to track than it is. Also had kids going off to college. I appreciate it so much to have other eyes on it. Mine are buggy. Ronnyanna

ronnyanna: Hello, stranger!! That AT&T card is begging to go. Is that doable in 2013? One fewer debt to track in 2014.

ronnyanna: I highly recommend YNAB for budgeting and for tracking expenses. We own an apartment building (4-plex). Of course, I'm a budgeting fanatic, so it came quite easy for me, but make sure you know your expenses for a rental, your budget for the rental should include a line for Maintenance, etc. Keep your rental separate from you house expenses. It is easier to track that way. Let me know if you need help. We've had the rental for a lot of years now. I'm hoping to pay off the mortgage in another 6 payments (we pay a lot over the amount due as we want it paid off early). Good luck and WELCOME BACK!

Thank you, thank you! Nidena, you are singing DH's favorite song: cut down the number of accounts.
Wudnit, you are a great resource if you know how to do this. I have a copy of YNAB but never got it going. I will go find it. What are your names/categories of expenses that you track both for personal and business? The bookkeeper made a master sheet for our receipts last year but we don't have a month-to-month system in place yet.
We just one of the tenants move out (our first to move out) and I'm seeing the expenses of getting it ready for the next. It is also a 4-plex.
O happy day to talk with you guys! Thank you

Howdy.
So, I thought I'd just keep you all apprised of the ongoing battle with Nationstar Mortgage and their attempts to hold my mortgage hostage.
My bankruptcy attorney is now filing a class action suit.
I have been going round and round with them for months. My attorney had written to them, I've filed complaints with HUD, etc., etc., bottom line, they're absolutely breaking the law and they don't care.
Thursday morning we spent an hour on the phone with them in my attorney's office, probably about 30 minutes of the phone call we had was spent on hold while the woman who was alternately making my attorney laugh at her truly blatantly stupid canned responses and angry when she actually told him he didn't know the law would put us on hold while she "researched" our questions. Of course, she was not 1) part of the legal department, 2) a law student or paralegal or any other legal trainee, and 3) was not a supervisor or manager, nor would she connect us with either Legal or Management.
And of course, the truth is, she probably had everybody who works there in either supervisory or legal capacity standing behind her coaching her and she was probably getting very uncomfortable.
So, after making about 4 million copies of every piece of mail I've sent back and forth to the FHA, the Better Business Bureau, another Consumer Protection Agency, as well as letters from the Bankruptcy court and my last statements from Bank of America, I left his office feeling - I wouldn't say elated, certainly not satisfied, but I at least feel like there's light at the end of the tunnel.
Oh, the latest joke? I wanted information on my mortgage balance, they actually sent me PAYMENT COUPONS - all the way through the end of September, they seem to think that my escrow isn't going to change! Of course, if it does, well, that will reflect negatively on MY credit.
Um... do what?
Meanwhile, I cannot get out from under these bozos because my last credit rating was 595. I have a mortgage company who says as soon as I top 600, they will take on my mortgage, btw, they won't refuse to give me any information about my mortgage, etc., etc. At the advice of the broker, I've got a secured credit card, $300, I just have to run it up a couple of months in a row and I should top out 600.
Yargh.
How's tricks, everyone?
