Hello Everyone! I hope you all are doing great and are enjoying the holiday season! We had a better update this month and should have even better updates from now on. My DH started his new job last Monday (a week early) as they had others starting on that day and wanted them all to start training at the same time. He loves his new job and will be making so much more money. He is paid hourly rather than salary and he can work as much overtime as he would like since they have so much work available. Even with no overtime he will make more than he used to make plus what I make so it will be a big boost to our finances. When he is finished with training he will be working offshore and he will make even more money so this debt will go very quickly and we will be able to save up money very quickly. We would like to build up our 6 month EF after this race is won. Then I would like to start paying off our mortgage. We are so blessed that he was able to get this job and I know that 2014 will be an amazing year. Welcome blueowl & tulip! We have used the Dave Ramsey baby step program (Total Money Makeover) and it really does work. It is hard to get the snowball going at first but once you start paying off your debts you will be amazing how fast the snowball grows and how fast that debt is paid off. Nasa - congrats on paying off your truck! I know when we paid off my car that is when the snowball really started to build and it was amazing how fast our race went from there. I truly hope the same for you. Have you had your baby yet? You have so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving! There have been so many great updates! Keep up the good work!

I agree on having to keep ourselves psyched up! Good job on the winky ...it will be great seeing your SL#4 paid percent climb to over 50% ! deepintx congrats on the great momentum you and your DH have built. Nice update tulip! ... update as often as you want, whatever seems to work best for you. I typically do 1 a month, but sometimes 2. Welcome back CarolinaKat, It's good to see you and it sounds like you're making steady race progress Our EF is going to take a hit. Friday night someone vandalized DH's Durango, shattered the back window. I think we can get it replaced soon and hopefully not too expensive. 'Til then he's on his motorcycle. (le sigh)

Here is a small update. I used a 0% balance transfer on my Citibank to pay off the pay day loan. The offer is good for 15 months so I should have plenty of time to get it to zero. My Target and Visa went up do to Christmas shopping and Thanksgiving traveling. I'm going to start setting more money aside so I won't encounter an increase in debt next year at this time.

Attention Captains:
Muffyinthe Red 11/15/2013 $79,055.15 (9/9/08 $128,662.37 S373, SU395, PRO 77, 81, 86, 137) NC Paid off since joining $49,607.22 Percentage: 38.6% Paid off this month: $98.53 Medical Bills $776.51 -59.00 = $717.51 CU Savings - $1,744.03
This is late and I apologize. My Dec. update will be in a little over a week but just realized that I didn't send the Nov. update. Probably didn't get sent because it is so sad.
Hopefully Dec. will be a little better but not expecting much better, what with Christmas and travelling for it. Next year will be better. I think I might have DH on board this month but we will see what the New Year brings.
Hope everyone is doing well. I have to read back to the end of Oct. and will do shout outs after I get that done.

Update! Pay-no-Interest: 12/11/13 $98,000
48% of the mortgage has been paid.
Not much to report here...just another monthly mortgage payment and I paid a little more to give me an even number. Next month I'll break into the $97K range.
I splurged and used some of the money I saved from my contract work to buy myself a gas, double oven stove. It's going to be really nice. We decided to go ahead and get an over-the-range microwave so we could have more counter space. DH was really stressing out about having the time to get all of the home improvement projects done and me adding this project didn't help. After meeting with the install guys he was willing to let me pay them to do it. I had plenty of money from my contract $$ to pay for the install and if it reduces DH stress, then it is definitely worth it to me. Now I'm putting myself on hold on buying expensive, luxurious items for many many years to come.
Now that I've this gorgeous new stove the rest of the kitchen is going to look pretty drab. I've decided I'm going to paint our existing cabinets and get new hardware. I think that will be provide enough of an upgrade until we are ready to redo the cabinets in the kitchen...many many years down the road.
DeepinTX: I'm so happy to read that your DH got the new job and he is enjoying it. Your plan to knock out the debt and build savings sounds like a great plan. So exciting!
I hope everyone is doing well!

Update: Trojen3 - 12/11/13: $50,646.09 (8/24/12: $99,479.89)
Name of Debt
| Current Debt | Starting Debt | Total Paid | % Paid | Car Loan | $0 | $2201.08 | $2201.08
| 100%
| SL #1 - Sallie Mae | $0 | $1491.42 | $1491.42 | 100% | SL #2 - Grad PLUS | $27,540.39 | $46,338.33 | $18,797.94 | 40.57% | SL #3 - Grad PLUS | $23,105.70 | $28,852.49 | $5,746.79 | 19.92% | SL #4 - Private | $0 | $20,596.57 | $20,596.57 | 100% | Total | $50,646.09 | $99,479.89 | $48,833.80 | 49.09% |
This might be my last payment for the year. I'm glad it was a really good one! But I'm hoping that I can come up with a few more dollars to get under $50k debt, over $50k paid and 50%. Work was excellent the last few weeks which allowed me to make a good paydown, but it seems to have slowed again as the holidays approach. We'll see. Otherwise, January I'll start putting all my extra money towards my IRAs again so the big payments will halt until we figure out taxes. Our saved 2013 tax money will hopefully wipe out SL #2 and then I'll have SL #3 left to tackle. The goal is to have it all gone by the end of 2014!

So here is the added debt from the PLUS loan we are paying back to MIL, as well as the break-down of Student loan 4. My plan of attack is to kill that loan 4-e with my debt snowball. That should be done by the end of January. Then I will throw my debt snowball at the PLUS loan so we can get that off our backs. SL4 is all on Income Based Repayment, so the minimums are really low. Like, so low that it would not even cover the interest. My instinct is to keep paying the $375 that used to be the payment for the whole thing, just pay the interest on the higher loans and apply the rest to one single loan. However, I just realized that I could pay the interest on all of the loans and apply the rest (it would be close to $270) towards the PLUS loan. Between the $270 and the extra amount at the end of each month, I could feasibly get rid of the PLUS loan in 10 months or less. Oh yeah, we got approved for a mortgage and are looking for a house! I know it is not following the Dave Ramsey principle and I am not going to try to make excuses. We could definitely pay more debt of faster if we did not get a house, but there is no way I would be able to talk DH out of it. We are looking for something that is less than the amount they approved us for. With the amount that we are looking at, we can comfortably live on DH's income alone, because he got that $4/hour raise! DeepinTX Good to see you around! Woohoo for the paydown and for more money in your EF, you are $125 away from $1,000! Congrats to your DH on his new job. forwardwego boo on the vandalism! Huzzah on the paydown and almost being under $10,000. Tulip: A paydown is a paydown, and you have done extremely well so far. Keep it up. Kudos for starting a fund now for next year. Muffyinthe Red: Hang in there girl. Just keep trying to talk to DH about finances and try to get him to understand how important it is that you both are in this together, and how important it is to you. Pay-no-interest With this new update, you passed me! But I'll get you my pretty, and your little dog too!(P.S. Good job on the paydown. The plans for updating the kitchen a little more sounds reasonable. Just make sure you keep it in check) Trojen3 Nice update! Also great that you plan on wiping your debt out by next year. Yee-haw! Bankergurl: Thanks for doing the updates on the two clubs! Jdnstl: Thanks for the shoutout and the smiley update!

Is everyone done with their Christmas shopping? Did you set a budget? Did you stay within that budget or did you go overboard? Any big plans?
Can you believe we're just about done with another year? This is a great time for setting new goals for the new year. My goal is to be debt free by 8/31. I need to check all my balances but now that I have a job that is providing me with decent funds, I think I can do it. I know it will be a little bit of tight living for the next 8 months but I'm willing to do it so that I don't have any bills again. I really only have one card that has a balance but the point is that it has a balance.
Jdnstl will send me the last file and I'll do the update this weekend. Now that I have my computer back up and running I can update my numbers and post them. It's not pretty but it's temporary!
Christmas is only one week away. I hope everyone is finding time to enjoy the season instead of running around. I'm going to be working, even on Christmas day, so it really should be quite peaceful for me...sounds strange but not having any expectations on me is the way I like it.

Ya'll may blow away the goal date of reaching $5 million! If we do, so what!!! We can celebrate sooner, right? Speech: i went ahead & did a quick update since there weren't too many. look for the files in your email soon. muffy: got your update. good job as i know you do have added expenses this time of year with traveling. paynointerest: you're almost to 50%!! then it'll be downhill. great job!! RRRis: i've got your numbers updated. you're doing great! so did you decide if you're gonna pay the plus loan faster? if you can afford a new house just on DH's salary then i say go for it. the problem with people buying houses while still in debt is that they normally get too much house that ends up using 2 incomes to pay for & when one of those is cut they are in big trouble. since you're already planning for a lower amount & only 1 income, i think you can buck dave ramsey on this. trojen: you are so close to 50%, no way to squeeze a little extra to reach that milestone before the end of the year? fantastic job so far. tulip: Good job paying down in the midst of increased holiday expenses. yes, budgeting ahead of time can help alleviate these increases. i know it can be hard but it's worth the try.

Hey jdnstl thanks so much for working on a state of the union update. I miss having those...they are a huge motivator. Thanks redracerris for the shoutouts, thanks for your encouragement and input keep up the good work all, it surely isn't easy, but if it were easy I guess we wouldn't need WIRRs, and being out of debt would be way more common than it is Final 2013 UPDATE Forwardwego 12/28/2013 $10500 (6/19/2011 $36780)

Speechchick Our budget for Christmas was saved up for during the year. It is actually part of our present budget. We save $10 a month, plus I save all of our ones a split that between presents and clothes. We ended up with something like $200. We did not have a lot of people to buy for, so that was fine. Part of my present went towards my birthday present of nice winter boots that were over $100, but worth every penny up here in Alaska.
As for my goal for next year, I have decided to pay off the PLUS loan early and paying that off by the end of next year is my goal.
jdnstl Thanks for the update. Also, a small update for the Galactic State of the Union. Attention Captains: Update Red Racer Ris 12/15/2013 $98,464(3/20/10 $145,409 SU220 SPB166 OK/AK) This includes the normal payment on SL 4. I did decided to do minimum payments on SL4 to and put the rest towards the PLUS loan.
forwardwego woohoo, another $200 gone!
We are totally killing that goal for June!

A big thanks to jdnstl for doing the update for me again! J: I started doing it tonight, starting from the most recent, until I came across the update you just did. You're the best. I"ll get the next few ones starting in January!
I spent some time on Friday night updating my spreadsheet, looking at my numbers, making a "plan" which is akin to my "goals". I am hoping to be debt free by the end of the summer. I got my first paycheck from my new job which covered 2 weeks but not even 80 hours. It's sad to say but my net pay was 10% of what I made all year long at my previous job. Things were that bad. I was lucky to have been able to pay off two of my 0% debts by their due date but I had to use some CCs to limp thru since the summer. I spent the rest of my weekend moving out of my apartment. I feel so much better about getting out of that area and getting on the path of financial freedom again. Between having my computer crash, having to move (partially) and starting a new job, and getting back out to there to finish the project, I feel like I lost about 6 weeks of my life. d
I hope you all had a restful but fun Christmas and/or Hanukkah and may the New Year be prosperous and healthy for all!

here's my update for the end of the year. so my boss surprised me big time the week before christmas. i got a raise and a bonus and he reimbursed me for my january health insurance since i can't join the group plan until february & he told me back in september that if i stayed & kept improving he would cover my insurance cost starting jan. 1st. what a big difference it makes working for a company that operates in the black. so i'll have to get used to a new budget in january & i hope to kill the last of this consumer debt before my next WIRR-iversry. i've got to pay off the rest of the christmas credit card charges first, & i have to make the big decision of if we will move this year or wait another year. i've applied for several magnet programs & depending on how those go in march it will influence if we move or not. right now most of the bonus is sitting in the checking as i wait for my first check of the year, i need to see what my net is & how i can budget going forward. then i'll transfer as much as possible to savings to pay for the move.

Hi all. I've been a long time lurker since the old MSN days. I've had a lot happen in 2013, but I am now in a position where I am going to work on paying down this debt. I read all the instructions and I hope I got everything right for my initial post. These are all of my debts except my mortgage and my student loans. I consider those to both be long term debts right now so I am going to tackle these others first. My current goal is to have these at $0 by 6/30/2015. I have some house and car maintenance to deal with in 2014, so I wanted to give myself a little bit of breathing room and make sure my goal was reasonable. Both Discover cards are at 0% interest right now. My first order of business is to pay off Discover # 2 before the 0% expires in August 2014. Then I will transfer the other three small cards to Discover # 2 at 0% interest again. From there I will work on paying off Discover # 1 before the 0% expires in January 2015. The car loan is already scheduled to be paid off in 2014 as long as I continue regular payments. The personal loan is not scheduled to be paid off until early 2016 (January I think). Once the cards are paid, I want to focus on making the personal loan disappear. I am really bad at budgeting. I have tried lots of different systems and I haven't been able to make any of them stick. I know a lot of the folks on YM often recommend You Need A Budget. I think I am going to do the free trial for that software and see if maybe I can get it to stick this time. I make a good salary in a LCOL area, so if I can tighten up on the budget side I should be able to make the timeline for my goal. Good luck to everyone and I look forward to racing with you this year!

Hello WIRRs!
I have been lurking on the board for quite a while now. I was a member before when we were MSN. I have decided this year I am going to tackle my debt. What better way to start the New Year then to face reality and make a plan! Thank you all for welcoming the new members! I look forward to racing my debt along side everyone!

Welcome aboard Marionth230 and Sparks2710, congrats on your decision to annihilate your debt Marion The captains need to know what state you live in. It looks like you have a workable plan. I've been reading about YNAB too, and think it's intriguing. I need to work on building the one month margin, but I'm so in the habit of putting the snowball toward debt. I'm resisitant to not paying down as much as I can. But I really do think that once the margin is established it would be a better system than my present system. Good job Tulip, sometimes it's chips and sometimes it's chunks, we just keep paying it down jdnstl YEA for working for a better, less chaotic company, and congrats on going down to the $4K range Speechchick So glad your new job is going to enable you to go for the win in 2014 Redracerris Nice goal to pay off that plus loan, and good job setting your own conservative upper limit on housing prices instead of the lender. Nice update paynointerest...good job finding balance between paying it off and quality of living in the present as well. Congratson updating Muffy!
Nice update trojen3 and a solid contribution to the group paydown goal

Update: 1/2/14 - $9,913.00 (7/20/07 $33,441.00 N3848) Greeting WIRR; Forwardwego and debtvctm, thanks for sharing your story, it helps. Great Updates Everyone! Happy News Years everyone! We had a nice Holiday Season and I enjoyed my time off from work. We did work on the house and have a little more to complete. As you may or may not know, we are like a one income family, not by choice mind you. I work full time, husband works contract, when they call him to repair systems. He has been on several interviews, he is 61 and feels like he is too old to be applying for jobs, and he does not look 61. Any way he wants to continue doing what he is doing and when he turns 62 apply for his SS. He has no 401K monies, because he use it to live on when he was out for his heart attack he had, he started his application for income disability but did not complete it. He would not let me help him at the time; he said he had it under control. His unemployment has run out as of November, and that was when he told me. My mother lives with us, as well as our two sons. They are currently out of work; hopeful things will change for them. My husband’s expenses are too high for him to retire. I cannot say that enough times. Anyway, I am doing all that I can and will not stress about it anymore. I will keep everyone informed of where finances are and what will and will not happen. If someone would have told me I would be here, I would have said no way, just no way. But I am and there are lesson to be learned, just asking to learn them quickly. I have a saying, it is not new, only thing is that I have changed a word in it “WTF” “Where’s the Faith”; I have it right here with me. It is carrying me thru this, so 2014 in all its glory, let’s do this!

Happy New Year Everyone
I am sorry I haven't updated before this but it has been crazy around here. My update went up because I decided to buy my husband something he wanted from Best Buy and I didn't have the money because all my money went for the hotels for our trip. But it only went up about $100 and that should be paid off quickly.
My goal for this year is to get this debt down more and to lose some weight!! If we aren't eating out and only buying healthy food, hopefully I will have more money to pay down debt.

Update ProCras108r 1/04/14 59500.59 (3/1/10 $69896.89) SU178 Great to see everyone doing so well, and with some fabulous payoffs deepintx and goalofzero! Woo hoo! Nasagreen, congrats for finally getting out from under those truck payments - what a weight lifted! forwardwego - I see a checkered flag in your future this year! DeepinTX, I wouldn't think twice about going back to school at any age. Well, I would have to weigh the cost/benefit, and look for financing options, but you're going to be 50 whether you have a degree or not; so why not go for it? It may feel like it's taking a while as you're going through it, but once you finish and look back, it's like most other experiences - gone in a flash. I actually liked going back to school as an older student - I got more out of it. I also started back when the program I wanted went entirely online, which was new to my workplace reimbursement. Once I explained (written letter with printouts from school) how it worked, and that it was a regular, accredited program; they didn't have any problem with the tuition reimbursement -so I hope you're still pursuing that option. Great to see new faces joining up. Stick with it, because it is definitely worth it! I haven't thrown a great deal at the mortgage this past year, funding other priorities. Roth is fully funded. I'm also still working on building the savings. I'm actually up to 10 months now! Aiming for a year! It should be noted that is total savings, so includes the accounts dedicated to auto, travel and the like. If I needed it, it would be available, but I'd like to get the funds built up in their own account, which is stalling at 3 months. This is also looking to be the year of the house. My last bathroom is dying on me, (an unfixable leak that's already flooded my septic tank) so I have to get it redone; and perhaps the other two as well. The exterior needed paint 8 years ago, the front door is laughable, and windows that open would be nice. However, as those of you who've done some renovating know; the items I listed would totally wipe out my current savings. Ack! So my payoff will continue to turtle for a while - no sense paying off a house if it's falling down around me. Happy New Year, and may it be a year of financial triumphs for all!
