GOAL UPDATESNew GOAL for 2014: $5 Million dollars. The date to meet this goal was 9/30/13 and we didn't make it. Let's try for 6/30/14. We have $234,145.26 left to payoff! Since we have lost a lot of members it's taking longer to meet our group goal. After some number crunching, we will need to average a monthly payoff of $1,160 as a group to reach that goal. What do ya'll think? Are ya'll in? SOUTH ACTIVE MEMBERSBolded lines mean members are in danger of going inactive. Update! Pay-no-Interest
11/10/13: $98,400.00 (05/07 $369,884.00)
%total paid off: 73.4% % of my mortgage paid off: 47.7%
I've decided to take some of the money that I have saved from my contract work and buy myself a dual oven gas range. I've narrowed it down to the following ranges:
1. LG dual oven, convection range (Free standing) 2. GE Profile slide in dual oven convection range 3. GE Cafe slide in dual oven convection range
Does anyone have any experience with any of these types of ranges? It is so hard to make a decision.
thanks!

I live in Florida. I used to post in the west section when I lived in Nevada and it's been a long time since I did and update. I think it's been over a year since I last added up my debts so now I'm on to a fresh start . Pay day is Friday so that will be nice seeing a dent in this debt.

Happy Wednesday everyone! Forwardwego, I do have an emergency fund which my hubby is thinking to use towards some change orders our contractor has for our houses. I am hesitant to give him, though. Will let you know what I decide on.
I want to praise all of you who are posting your updates and slashing those debts! it sure is motivating to come in here. I need to make it a habit to visit here daily. Gnight all!

Shoutout to all the Southern WIRRs, this can be a spendy season, don't let it knock you off your plan. Hang tough. That $20 something or other is eventually gonna end up on a shelf and need dusting. How have the 2013 goals worked out so far, and what are your goals for 2014?? My 2013 goal was to win my race but then there were major dental bills, so I'm recycling that goal and plan to win my race in 2014, & in the process help our southern group reach $5 million total paid Hey debtvctm, nice work, 9% paid is now 11.7% paid Are you under the limit on the cc's now? Looks like your next "milemarker" is to be under $30K! Speechchick How are you? How is the job transition going? These have been a couple hard years for you, but 2014 looks like a "good road" for your career and debt race. Georgiamama How R U?

Good Morning people! Forwardwego, I am exactly 382.00 above my credit limit on my CC-Chase M card. When I checked online yesterday for my balance, it says that I don't have any payment due but I know I am above my credit limit so I want to slash off this much before Saturday.
This holiday season is going to be tricky as I don't have spending budget. Will try to limit to only buying my immediate family presents to keep spending low. I don't have spending problem but my hubby does. I do the bill payments but he always manages to outspend my payments. We've been doing this for seven years and twice I've paid down our bills completely but they always come back. I am at the point of giving up on paying his cards and have him manage and pay for them himself. But then, I know that will ruin his credit as he will miss payments and stuff. There are three more cards I am not listing which are cards that he is still using. anyways, need to somehow figure out what will work.

Yes, DH & I are also out of synch on finances. We are married almost 31 yrs now. It was spring of 2010 when I finally got the strength and motivation to push for what I want...to be debt free. It is very tough. He understands...sort of. Until he wants the next thing. I have it figured out. He is all about some item but it's thrill lasts no more than 2 years and then he wants/needs something else/different/more. I have to be the "wet blanket" unless I want to give up and just live in ever-increasing debt. Around 2003-2005, I mentally "checked out" of caring and our finances went crazier than ever. Somebody has to be the realist, the tough guy. It would be nice if we could be a "tough financial team" but it just is not going to happen. I have put aside any resentment and accept that 90% of the effort to be financially healthy and sound will come from me. We had some heart-to-heart talks, and he's trying to do better. Early on in my firm stance, he still wanted to eat out a lot. I would tell him I can't afford it. I'm fixing something here at home and will make for you too. A few times he went out to eat without me. I didn't let myself get angry, just stayed firm. I can really only control me, and hope that he chooses to follow my example some. For us, there will always be a bit of struggle but hopefully we can be respectful and keep working toward middle ground whenever possible. I don't share everything about our finances with him, instead I share my victories here on the board. I am afraid to share the victories with him for fear he will suddenly need/want a whole new group of "stuff". So like alphayankee a WIRR from a few years ago, I let DH think we have more debt than we do. He understands "we don't have the money". He doesn't understand "we have money, but it's earmarked for something else." We will need a new A/C soon and I've got a fund for that built up to @ $2500. If I waivered, it would be spent on vacation or something else and the A/C would get charged, and I would feel poor and weak and yucky. So 3.5 years into my quest to ditch consumer debt, we have no CC debt, owe $7700 on my car, and $3300 to the dentist. Have raced away $35K in debt so far. I'm excited for 2014... to have all non-mortgage debt paid, but I'm also afraid because it would be devastating to backslide. It will require yet more change as I transition out of debt elimination into debt free maintenance. Excuse my long-windedness. I hope there's something you can use .

Forwardwego, I am practically balling with tears. That is exactly what I did this past year. Undergoing some marriage struggles with him and finances on top of it all, I just gave up. And now we are back in this mount of debt. I don't have all of our debts posted because it just wears me out to try to tackle the items that has his name to it or the cards he is in possession of. It drains me just thinking about it but I guess I really have to be strong and face it that I have to be the one to get us out. I always have resentment. He is addicted to buying shoes, car has to be new every three years, and the list goes on. I've paid off my car and he is bugging me to trade it in. My goodness so much is going on and so thank you for sharing your story. 31 years?? wow, congratulations!!! I hope we can stay strong like that. thank you and thank you for sharing your story. I am always open with my husband on finances and maybe I need to start keeping some information from him. I need to run out to the post office but promise to be back and work on getting ALL our debts posted. well with the exception of two credit cards that are in his name. if I pay those down he will only fill them up again. The cards I have already listed have our names together on them so I took those cards away. anyways, I am so grateful for this board and all of you out there. This might not only be for financial reasons but also for saving marriages. wow. thank you very much.

debtvctm, Twice before you've gotten all the debt paid off, and that's good. You know how to pay it down. I can't even remember how I finally got the ball rolling back in 2010. But I believe you can do it too. I don't share all the finances with DH, but he doesn't seek to know either. If he asked me, I would give him the accurate information. Example: only owing @$7700 on my car is good and a lot of progress, and I celebrate that here with like minded people. If DH asked how much more we owe on my car, I would answer "alot". ($7700 is alot of money.) If he asked How much is a lot? I would say I just recently got it under $10 thousand, which is true. He's probably tired of hearing me talk about "the money", so he doesn't ask much. For years we had no EF , but starting in 2010 I followed Dave Ramsey's babystep plan of first building a $1000 EF. That's made a big difference. Now I think of the EF like a bill and if it's not at least $1000 then I owe it money. So I've worked on changing my mindset too. During the past year I started an account and named it VF, "vehicle fund" for repairs and maintenance since that was an area we never seemed to be ready for, and the A/C fund. So it's helped me to have accounts with "names" which helps those funds not get touched for other things. Maybe you could start an account called "next car", and then instead of giving in to the pressure to trade yours in, say you have a new plan to save up for the next one and agree to trade when you have your debt down and your "next car" account up. Every marriage is unique, and new perspectives can help. Being here has helped me. It's hard to not be emotional about money and debt. Several times I have come here and planned out how I would approach things, & I'm finally getting better results. I hope some of the other WIRRs can lend their persepectives too. There are a lot of debt hating people here who have overcome, they are honest and supportive. BTW there is one debt my DH incurred that my name is not on. I pay the minimum on it. Other than that I've finally quit worrying much about it, Maybe that's good, I'm not sure. Well again pretty long-winded. Try to think positive. You've been successful before.

Thank you forward we go! I will definitely look up that baby step book. Oh and what a neat idea to start separate accounts for different purchases. I'll try that out as well. You've been very helpful and pray that I get to your stage where I have things figured out. We are building two investment properties which are completing this month and we have relatives on the island the houses are being built who can inspect them but he wants to go there to personally do the inspection which will cost us 3,000 round trip ticket that we do not have. I am just so drained by the way he thinks. He is not scared of incurring debt. His mentally is that if he is working and paying pills he is okay. he says one cannot make it without borrowing money. oh goodness. I am worn out but will put efforts into fixing this financial mess.

Re: accounts with names on them. I also recommend this method! It helps me sooooo much to save when I earmark the money rather than just let it pile up all together. I have a Car Fund, which is direct deposited into a separate credit union than my primary banking. No debit card, no checking account. I have to drive to the CU to get money out. Before I did this, I wasn't managing to save any money toward a replacement car or maintenance on my current one. Now, it has about $5k in it, and I've done nothing different other than start a dedicated fund account. I also have smaller 'funds' in envelopes hidden at home. Literal envelopes work great for me, because they're not in my purse, the money is not in my checking account to be spent, and I forget they're even there. I have one for Car Insurance Fund, 2014 Vacation Cash Fund, Contributions Fund, House Insurance Fund, etc. I intentionally keep a very low balance in my checking account, but I have dedicated money stashed in a number of places that are much less accessible. I appear and feel 'artificially broke', but it keeps my spending in check when I look at my bank balance and I only have $18 in it!

Good FRIDAY Morning WIRRs
I hope we all have a lovely autumn weekend. It's finally feeling a little like fall here in Florida. Our electric bill will drop, yea! 3jsmom It's good to see you. What's new on the farm? How are you, the kids, and critters? RockyMtnSaver Isn't it interesting how the dedicated/named accounts makes a big difference? That's fantastic that you have $5K toward the next ride. Our vehicle repair & maintenance fund (VF) only gets $15 a week, but somehow it adds up when it's "forgotten" about. It has dipped down lately paying for tags and a motorcycle repair, so I'll try to budget in a little more than the automatic $15, but usually it builds up well enough on its own. debtvctm The "baby steps" are a part of Dave Ramsey's book called "Total Money Makeover". Many Wirrs and alot of people have benefitted from it. I use a lot of his principles. If you're concerned about how the title sounds (you know "total makeover" sounds kind of too big maybe?), don't worry, it really is baby steps, easy to read and understand, and encouraging. I re-read it occasionally because it helps in different ways as we progress. You can go to DaveRamsey online and see the 7 baby steps. (Another book I liked is "The Millionare Next Door" about people who are relatively "wealthy" on incomes that are pretty modest.) We had a member freshnewday, she and her DH used a lot of Dave Ramsey's principles, may have attended one of his live presentations? Well she's not here now because they paid off everything. My DH doesn't like to read except for motorcycle magazines, but I'd like to get him to a Dave Ramsey live presentation, could inspire him financially better than I can. to the WIRRs Has any of you been to a Dave Ramsey presentation? Or done any of his courses? Do you use his principles or techniques?

Hey everyone! I'm still around and yes, forwardwego, I'm thinking 2014 is my year as well. I am wrapping up my job this week, going to my sister's house for Thanksgiving, and then I have a week to get everything organized. I am so looking forward to a "real" paycheck again. I can't wait to start paying off my credit card, too! I would love to post an update but I don't have access to my accounts. Well, maybe I can do it. I actually have 2 Zeros as I needed to pay off my 0% interest cards but then transferred money back onto them to even things out again. I'm not going to race that debt as I have a year to get it paid off my my main interest is getting my bed and one cc paid off.
I don't have access to my account totals right now because my computer died! My "old" computer at work (my own personal laptop) has been slowly dying: first, the power cord stopped making a good connection with the motherboard so it has to be taped into place...a new place each day. Then, my mouse buttons stopped working followed very quickly by my wireless not working, and now caps lock is not working (I know, not that important). I was hoping that it could limp forward until my last day of work on Wednesday but now it is pulling double-duty because my "good"/"new" computer (over 2 yrs old) probably has a fried motherboard. I am having a friend look at it and hopefully he can put a new motherboard in for me because I'd rather not put the money into buying a new one. You know how everyone is doing the month of Thanks on FB? Yep, I'm thankful that I started using an online backup (Carbonite....let me refer you if you're interested) so all of my pictures are not lost....thousands upon thousands of pictures! When/if I get a new computer I can just go on the Carbonite website and hit "restore" and voila!: everything is back on my computer. When my computer would not turn on earlier this week, I almost threw up. I take care of my tech products: maintaining them, running scans, removing trojans...this one is out of my league.
forward and debtvctm: thanks for sharing your stories. I (luckily?) don't have a spouse to spend all my money but then again I don't have a spouse to help me make payments and save for retirement. I do know that my friend and her husband were having similar money issues. At the time, they were making roughly the same amount of money but he was spending WAY more than she was. She finally sat down with him and said she couldn't do it any longer and they ended up creating a house fund, retirement, and then personal funds. A certain % went into the house fund to cover any of the house expenses (groceries, utilities, mortgage, repairs, etc), % toward retirement, etc. The personal funds were for whatever you wanted to buy. CC's were the same (home vs personal) and you were responsible for paying your personal cc with your personal fund. I'm sure their accounts have been modified, especially since the arrival of their 2nd child, but they still keep that personal fund. She has since increased her salary by at least 2x the amount whereas his has stayed the same so she has more "fun money" than he does. She's a responsible spender and he has learned how to curb his spending because he didn't have the funds. As far as I know, he still carries a balance on his personal cc but she does not. She's convinced that she is going to outlive him so she is dumping everything she can into retirement and investment accounts. He'll appreciate it if she's wrong!
Maybe something similar would work for you, debtvctm. And you haven't been married "too long" to change to something like that, I think they did it after they were married for at least 10 years because I know they had their first child already. The envelope system works too. I had my money in one lump but had a spreadsheet with how much was being saved in each area for certain expenses (back when I was saving a crapload of money). You might find freshnewday on the Savers' board, she was there a while back. There might even be a Dave Ramsey thread somewhere on here. But like forward said, you've gotten out of debt before, you can do it again because you know how but it never hurts to learn some new moves.
I'll see if I can find my numbers and post an update...I know I am way late in getting one done!

Posted by debtvctm - Happy Wednesday everyone! Forwardwego, I do have an emergency fund which my hubby is thinking to use towards some change orders our contractor has for our houses. I am hesitant to give him, though. Will let you know what I decide on. debtvctm I would recommend against giving him any part of the emergency fund. That is for emergencies. Like if your tranny suddenly goes out. It is your murphy repellent. Regarding getting on the same page as DH, everyone does it differently. I am completely honest with my DH. Every month we have a meeting regarding money. I am the one who keeps track of things, but we discuss big purchases and have come to compromises regarding saving for a house vs. paying off debt vs. fun money. How we do things is like this: We have a $2,000 emergency fund (we live in a HCOLA, so figured that would help out more), I also save for the two months in the summer I will not have work. At the end of the month, any money that is left over goes into a savings account that is linked to our checking account, in case we need it. This gets used before the emergency fund. If, after a month, the money is not used, 15% goes to each of us for whatever we want (cap of $100, and the rest goes to either the house fund or paying off loans) to total 30%. 35% then goes into savings for a house, the other 35% goes towards debt repayment. Our budget consists of things we use monthly. If it is not payable online, we use the cash envelope system (I.e. food, groceries, cats). If it is a bigger ticket item, such as tags for the car, we just budget for that month only. Oh, as far as the cash goes, there is a little bit of fun money included. Once the cash is gone, it is gone. I must mention that we do not have credit cards at all. Our debt is all student loans at this point (at some time in the future, as you can tell by our house fund, we will have a mortgage). That has been crucial to our success. Dave Ramsey will tell you to cut up your credit cards. The reason I do not have credit cards is because I saw what it did to my mother. Based on what you have said here, the only way your husband is not going to rack up debt is if he does not have any credit cards. So one way to approach this dilemma is tell that he is responsible for his credit cards (I think like you mentioned earlier) and let his credit score take a hit. Let him hit rock bottom. I can appreciate that watching a loved one get into trouble like that is difficult and heart-wrenching. So the other thing you could do is make him see all of the debt you have. Then show him some examples of people who have paid off all of their debt and continue to live debt free. I listen to DR(Dave Ramsey) all the time for inspiration, because some day I am going to have that freedom. It might seem constraining to live only on what you make, but think if all you had to pay was for your basic bills. If DH and I didn't have our student loans, we would $1400 extra that we could do whatever we like with. Make him see how important it is to you. That is what I had to do with DH. I was overwhelmed because I was the only one taking care of the finances and seeing how much debt we had. Honestly, I would much rather put every extra cent towards loans, but that is the trade-off with me bringing him in on the finances - we had to compromise. DR is of the mind that all of your income and debt becomes one when two people get married, and I fully believed that as well. I get to share my wins with DH and when we reach a milestone, we celebrate with a bottle of chocolate wine. I also am not as overwhelmed because he shares the responsibility of it as well. It sounds as though your DH does not appreciate the fact that credit cards are not free money. It has to be paid back. Wow, sorry for the long post, I hope you find something helpful in there .

HI Everyone,
I am alive and not dead. I am still racing but I contacted an evil computer virus that ate basically everything and I've done a brillant thing and lost my jump drive with the back-up info. Once I find it, I'll post an update, but if all goes according to plan, I should be ringing in the new year at under the 6k mark!

All right, not quite up to what is needed for our goal. However, I just made an extra $935 payment to SL 4 so next months update will more than make up for it. Next month I plan on adding the PLUS loan we are paying towards for MIL. After I pay a mini-loan off (it will not be long. After the payment posts I should have roughly $800 left on it) for SL 4, we are going to start throwing all of our extra money allocated to debt payment towards that. I am waiting until next month so that my total will still be under $100,000. Currently it is $572 over that. It is a psychological thing. So some I hit some milestones this update! I have paid off over $40,000 and over 30%, so I get another winky smile! Tulip Nice 2nd update! That 0 looks fabulous on you! I used to update twice a month when DH was in the military getting paid on the 1st and 15th, but now only do once a month because it is easier with my schedule. DebtFreeRedux: Great update!Over $7,000 paid off in 2 months! You are blasting that debt. Vroom Vroom And over $90k paid! Watch out SL #2! You're next! Trojen3 WOW! Over $5,000 this last month, awesome! I really think that we will be able to make our goal of $5 million paid by Jun 30th 2014 Pay-no-Interest $600 of debt blasted! I was looking at your beginning amount and I saw just how far you have come. The average per year you have paid is roughly $45k! You are doing wonderful. As far as ranges, I am still renting and do not have a lot knowledge. I would figure out what your needs are and go from there. I do know that I eventually would like a Monarch cook stove that also serves to heat the house.
