DQ...I would not be surprised if autism was also a result of something in our environment. There are so many chemicals we are bombarded with on a daily basis that did not exist years ago.

Cheesy, I'd also argue that the DSM III (or IV, it's been a long time since I took abnormal psych) is also updated as time goes on, and it includes a lot of disorders that were never previously classified.

Oh it was mare urine? I was telling DH about that, I thought it was estrogen she injected directly into her hoo ha. I said if how she looks is the key to youth, FORGET IT! Mare urine is a huge component of HRT, did you know that? Specfically pregnant mares and a particular hormone they produce. Maybe it was pregnant mare urine. I dunno, all I know is that I couldn't believe what I was hearing.........

We are on DSM V now moneyjenny.
When my mom was young she said that you were "retarded" or "Downs Syndrome" there were not a ton of different categories and diagnosis.
She also thinks that she may have known some kids who would now be labeled Aspberger's but at the time were just considered "weird' "odd" or "marching to the beat of a different drummer".
There didn't use to be a spectrum. Now the spectrum is so huge that with the right doctor you could probably fit just about every child in America on it.

I think that's part of it. People with mild autism or Asperger's were just considered a little quirky before, it didn't have a diagnosis.

I forget what the exact intitals stand for but it is basically a giant diagnositic encylopedia that has every current mental illness and its description inside. It's basically the Bible for the mental health industry.

I don't understand how it started with avoiding one vaccine (MMR), but has now morphed into all vaccines. Thanks to these quacks, we are now having outbreaks of whooping cough every year.

I agree that the rates of autism aren't actually increasing, we are just diagnosing everyone who is a little outside the box. I probably would have been labelled Aspergers if I was born a few years later.

DSM = Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. The full title of the book is longer, but DSM is the common abbreviation -- it's the diagnostic manual for psychological disorders.

Same here. I was really surprised at how many of the "signs" matched. Then when I thought about the industry I am in probably 99.9% of the people I know would now be labeled as Aspergers or autistic nowadays.

Yeppers, right now I'm staring at my edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition. I'm still waiting for my copy of DSM V so I don't have borrow anyone else's.

This is an interesting article from the Boston Globe that kinda discusses the upsurge in diagnosing and medicating for metal disorders in children. http//www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2010/12/12/with_ssi_program_a_legacy_of_unintended_side_effects/?page=full
It highlights how so many factors contribute to the increases in mental illness diagnoses. On the one hand, it is good that many people who had to previously suffer in silence and struggle with their disabilities now have help available. But, on the other hand, how many people are being labeled erroneously and have to suffer the stigma of mental illness because it's the latest fad answer to any little non-normal behavior in a child or because without that label the family won't get government money. It's a tricky dilemna.

I remember reading about the "upswing" in two years with bi-polar disorder. I sat there thinking (cause this was a regular magazine article, not a medical/psychology journal) how much of it is really MORE two year olds actually being bi-polar vs a child now going thru the "terrible twos" being labeled bi-polar? Personally I think labeling children that young as bi-polar is dangerous especially when it involves giving them medication because there is no reserach into what being on those types of drugs at that age really does to a child. While it is great that kids can get help earlier, really TWO YEAR OLDS being diagnosed as bi-polar?

I'm "quirky" my son is "autistic" (Asperger's) but we are very similar. I was put into gifted programs, he has a special education IEP. The big difference is now we diagnose it. He is a little more so than I was, but no one ever thought of saying I might be autistic.

I don't know if it's already been mentioned, but I firmly believe that part of the reason there seems to have been an increase in autism cases is because they have created a spectrum which is unbelievably broad, so 15-20 years ago, children who would have just been seen as "quirky" now fall on the autism spectrum. Only severe cases of autism were actually diagnosed as such back then. And since Autism is the new "hot" diagnosis it has lots of funding. My dd is mentally retarded but the criteria for autism is so broad that she meets enough of the autism criteria to be diagnosed as pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified. For a few years I allowed the PDD-NOS diagnosis because it opened up taxpayer funded programs. My daughter is not autistic and her neurodevelopmental pediatrician didn't actually believe she was autistic, even though she techinically met the criteria...because it is so damn broad.

Jen they also changed the way they decide what is classified as autism and what isn't. So the majority of patients in the 60-80's that had the same gumptions as now wouldn't have been classified as having autism then and today they would have. this was done to allow people to be able to get state paid for therapies for their kids. But even thought they have been asked they won't go back and figure out what the real number would be today using the old determination. It would be interesting to know if there has actually been an uptick or not. And not to mess up an argument with facts but Jenny McCarthy doesn't advocate not vaccinating children. But for some reason people keep insisting it anyway.
