Peter Walsh’s 31 Days to Get Organized Challenge:
Day 1 -Set up a donation bin. And, everyone in your house finds 5 items to place in the bin.
Day 2 - Shoes. Gather all of your shoes up from your closet. If they have dust on them, don’t fit, etc, put them in your donate bin. Only keep shoes you love, wear, and that fit you well.
Day 3 - Home Safety. Being organized is not just about closets and files, it's also about ensuring the best life for you and your family. The New Year is a great time to check smoke detectors in your home. Make this your 10 minute challenge for the day and make your family a little safer in the process!
Day 4 - This year’s challenge Mantra is “No more later” aka stop procrastinating. Today's challenge is to contact someone, preferably by phone, that you’ve been putting off. It could be a friend, family member, for more coworker, etc, but do it today!
Day 5 - The Junk Drawer.
Day 6 - Holiday Decorations. The holidays are over and it's time for the decorations to come down.
Day 7 - Bathroom cabinets! Pick one bathroom cabinet, and get rid of anything too old, expired or you don’t use, and put everything away in its proper space.
Day 8 - Plastic Food Storage Containers.
Day 9 - Hanging Clothes. In his video, he says that anything that has dust on it needs to go.
Day 10 - the mail. If you have mail pretty much all over your house then today's the day we're going to get that sorted out.
Day 11 - under the sink.
Day 12 - Clear out old magazines, catalogs, flyers, etc.
Day 13 - Gift wrap
Day 14 - space underneath your bed
Day 15 - Getting the fridge & freezer organized.
Day 16 - "The Lower Third Technique"! (For those notmwatchint the videos on Facebook, it’s basically to take a stack or pile of clothing and focus on the bottom 1/3 of the stack, as you’ll likely find you can donate most of that part of the pile).
Day 17 - Bills & Receipts.
Day 18 - back in the kitchen dealing with the cupboard that holds your cups and mugs.
Day 19 - Today I challenge you to tackle just one small area of your garage... it's all about just getting started!
Day 20 - has us back in the kitchen with a challenge about keeping flat surfaces clear.
Day 21 - Books (Don't start screaming yet)! This is always an emotional topic! I love books too but if your books are never going to be read and are covered in dust, perhaps today's the day to deal with them.

One of the problems with growing up in poverty is that you don't naturally come by knowledge of how to manage money, any money. The lessons of saving and planning that accrue in a middle-income life aren't there when there's nothing to save and no point in planning. This. I grew up in a low-income household - not poor, but not middle class. We had free or reduced lunches every single year. My parents would skip getting new shoes so my sister or I could get new clothes/shoes (usually bought on clearance or garage sales, and handed down from me to sister). We didn't take family vacations except trips to visit family. We were a one car family, but we at least had a car. And thankfully my sister's best friend's dad owned a mechanic shop, so he would let my parents make payments for car repairs. We grew a garden in the summer for produce. We rarely had fresh fruit in the winter because of the cost. But we had food on the table, and my sister and I didn't notice that we didn't have much money until late middle or high school. We ate out at restaurants like maybe 4 times/ year - for someone's birthday. We reused everything, but part of that is also probably how my parents grew up, and that their parents were not wasteful. All of that to say, my parents could handle the money they had or didn't have - they got bills paid, owned a small house (inherited from my grandparents, and worth maybe $30k now), and generally avoid credit card debt. My dad worked in a pension system for a while before he went on medical disability due to his epilepsy, and my mom then has a 401k at her job now. But when my great aunt died and left my dad around $80-100k (don't remember the exact number, but it was a $300k-ish estate, split between my dad and his two siblings, plus small bequests to the 7 great nieces/nephews), they basically frittered it away in a few years. They bought a new minivan (no family making less than $30k/year needs a brand new minivan, even if this was back in 1996 or so...in which case their income then was probably closer to $20k, but I don't know for sure), added central heat/air to our house (and got hosed by the contractor because they had no experience dealing with one), and I'm not sure what else. But it was all gone. If they had known to invest that, their lives 10 years down the road would have been much easier, and my mom's retirement choices today would be different (my dad died in 2011, so it's only my mom now). Anyway, my parents aren't even an extreme example, and again, I grew up low income, not poor.

You know they make half-sheet paper towels these days? We actually use kitchen towels for drying hands and another one for drying anything washed. I change the second one every day and the other once a week (there are two hand-drying towels with racks). We do the two kitchen towels as well. We did not in my house growing up - just one towel, but DH subscribes to the two towel method. It drives him batty when my mom visits and uses the wrong towel. I just remind him I do the laundry, so swap it out early and it’s all good.

i’m traveling for work and schools just got canceled for tomorrow. Poor DH. Cold? Looking at our forecast, if it doesn’t change, I’m expecting a weather day on Wednesday due to extreme cold (for us).

Another bloody nose this afternoon. The nurse at the pediatrician ‘s office suggested putting Vaseline on a qTip and putting in each nostril before bed, so I’m going to pick up Vaseline and saline spray tomorrow. I don’t know how much he’ll like either, but maybe one will be tolerable and we can do it before bed for a while to see if it helps.
We have the vaporizer on in his room, and I had DH turn the humidifier up to a higher setting today.

Family vacation to Disney World in June. I have a meeting in Orlando then, so going to piggyback a family vacation to Disney. Of course, I should probably start booking hotels and buying park passes at some point.
Clear more clutter out of my house. It’s a very sloooooooowww process for me, but I keep working at it.
Family vacation somewhere else- likely late July or early August. We’re thinking Colorado to visit one of my BFFs and her family, and DH’s uncle and aunt. We can drive there, so as long as we don’t end up with an unexpected work trip elsewhere that we want to piggyback a family vacation into, this will probably be where we end up.
I want to do a girls weekend with three of my high school girlfriends. We did one last year at a lake house with our families, so I’d be game for that again, or a girls only trip. One of the ladies just remarried last fall, and has been pretty distant, so we’ll see if it happens. Or maybe 3 of us will do something instead of 4 of us.

Anyone have a kiddo with bloody noses? Anything you do to help prevent them? We’ve got a humidifier going in C’s room, and a larger one downstairs already.
He gets them maybe every 2-4 weeks. They don’t usually last that long, but the school nurse called today to say it was “heavy” and took about 30 minutes to stop the bleeding.

Depends on your company, but I don’t think it will be career suicide to take a step back for your next role. It happens more often than people talk about - and it asked, you can always just say you had personal reasons for needing to do so, but you’re ready to step up again (if that point comes).

Peter Walsh’s 31 Days to Get Organized Challenge:
Day 1 -Set up a donation bin. And, everyone in your house finds 5 items to place in the bin.
Day 2 - Shoes. Gather all of your shoes up from your closet. If they have dust on them, don’t fit, etc, put them in your donate bin. Only keep shoes you love, wear, and that fit you well.
Day 3 - Home Safety. Being organized is not just about closets and files, it's also about ensuring the best life for you and your family. The New Year is a great time to check smoke detectors in your home. Make this your 10 minute challenge for the day and make your family a little safer in the process!
Day 4 - This year’s challenge Mantra is “No more later” aka stop procrastinating. Today's challenge is to contact someone, preferably by phone, that you’ve been putting off. It could be a friend, family member, for more coworker, etc, but do it today!
Day 5 - The Junk Drawer.
Day 6 - Holiday Decorations. The holidays are over and it's time for the decorations to come down.
Day 7 - Bathroom cabinets! Pick one bathroom cabinet, and get rid of anything too old, expired or you don’t use, and put everything away in its proper space.
Day 8 - Plastic Food Storage Containers.
Day 9 - Hanging Clothes. In his video, he says that anything that has dust on it needs to go.
Day 10 - the mail. If you have mail pretty much all over your house then today's the day we're going to get that sorted out.
Day 11 - under the sink.
Day 12 - Clear out old magazines, catalogs, flyers, etc.
Day 13 - Gift wrap
Day 14 - space underneath your bed
Day 15 - Getting the fridge & freezer organized.
Day 16 - "The Lower Third Technique"! (For those notmwatchint the videos on Facebook, it’s basically to take a stack or pile of clothing and focus on the bottom 1/3 of the stack, as you’ll likely find you can donate most of that part of the pile).
Day 17 - Bills & Receipts.
Day 18 - back in the kitchen dealing with the cupboard that holds your cups and mugs.
Day 19 - Today I challenge you to tackle just one small area of your garage... it's all about just getting started!
Day 20 - has us back in the kitchen with a challenge about keeping flat surfaces clear.
Day 21 - Books (Don't start screaming yet)! This is always an emotional topic! I love books too but if your books are never going to be read and are covered in dust, perhaps today's the day to deal with them.
Day 22 - Linen Cupboard. Towels, sheets, blankets and more!

Yesterday, DH and I went through some of the kitchen cabinets. We purged some coffee mugs, reusable water bottles, shot glasses, and other miscellaneous glassware. I tried convincing DH we don’t need the margarita glasses we haven’t used in probably 8+ years, but he’s convinced in a few years when the kids are older, we’ll use them for us again. I disagree, but he did agree to move them to the cabinet above our fridge that neither of us can reach, so at least they’re not taking up valuable cabinet real estate down low.

My kids are way younger, but I wouldn’t pay it off either. I think I’d probably just listen sympathetically, say something along “I’m sorry, dear, that does sound bad/stressful/whatever” and ask what she plans to do about it, or change the conversation.

We switched shoe brands. When Gwen was wearing Nikes her feet would stink so bad she could clear a room. She wanted Adidas so I got her some for Christmas and the stink went away. Nothing else has changed. I have no freaking clue. Must be something in the material of the Nikes that reacted with her foot chemistry. We are an Adidas family now.😛 That’s a thought. He’s never had particularly stinky feet until recently, and we just got him the stride rite knockoff shoes they sell at Target a few weeks ago. I randomly have new shoes also on the way because he keeps wearing through whatever I buy. New shoes are a different brand, so I’ll also see if that makes a difference.

Anyone have a tried and true or favorite remedy for stinky shoes? C’s shoes are stank after school, basketball, and/or soccer. Like clear the room stank. Minimal decluttering accomplished this week due to work travel and busy evenings, but I did manage to sort through a box of C’s papers and art from kindergarten (which was last school year) and got rid of most of it, so yay.
DH and I are hoping to be able to tackle some more stuff this weekend, so hopefully I’ll have more to report throughout the weekend.
