Every once in a while you all make me feel like I am left out of a club I really don't want to be a member of to begin with. Like neither of my kids ever had head lice, or 4 years ago when I was freaked out about an eye infection -> it was the first time in my life I ever had to deal with pink eye. Neither siblings, nor kids, nor I had ever had it. And now - I can't really be the only 71yo female who has never had a UTI can I now?

Risk of death from childbirth for the women is 100 times higher than that of an abortion. I would say that abortions could be justified because they save a women's life. Who could argue with a 100 fold risk of death. Most medical treatments don't decrease your risk of dying by that much! don't gild the Lilly. it is 80x higher. As did most women in the Netherlands I had my first child at home. It was far safer than having a child in a US hospital. And that statistic was foremost in my mind when my second son was born here in a hospital. While all went well/uneventful it was sure not nice feeling relatively unsafe. Despite all advances in medicine over the last 40 years if I were that young and pregnant today, living in one of those "protect the unborn at all cost states" I would high-tail it out of here to have my baby in the Netherlands...

I now know more about horses than I ever did and some of it invokes pictures in my mind I would have been fine never seeing. Oh, and just reading about it I can "smell horse poop. LOL.
On the good side: I had a flashback to one of the very few times in elementary school I was late: I had become so engrossed in watching a horse being shoed (is that the right word?) that I lost track of time until I heard the church bells strike the hour - which was when school started. To be that young and carefree again...

If you are asking about an under 30yo, not to my knowledge. Now my/our greatest failure as a mom/parents was that we were not able to stop DS1 from picking up the habit when he was away in college. Neither xH nor I ever smoked when we had kids (Ex smoked for a very short time when we first got together and I never did). But we lost his beloved, smoking, oma due to lung cancer . It was not enough of a deterrent and he smokes to this day - just never in any house or around me.

I am on a roll: another 8-inches of books culled! Now before you are getting excited about all those empty book shelves -> there is no such thing yet. Before I started all shelves had double rows of books on them. Now a number of them have only single rows. So progress is being made but it is invisible to the naked eye

Sometime in the early to mid- nineties I read a list in USA Today* of the most banned books in the US. To this day I am proud to say that, even though I was not perfect, I had bought 8 out 10 of those books for my kids. * We lived in Singapore at the time and this was one of the three newspaper subscriptions we had. The others were The Straits Times and (for now xH) the Wall Street Journal. We were and are still a family of readers.

You Light Up My Life by Debbie Boone. Almost puke just writing this. Most here are probably to young to remember it. But they played it every other song on all stations Loathsome song. If I ever came across debbie Boone taking a bath I would toss into the tub a plugged in toaster. LOL, tell us how you really feel. And should you ever get your chance to toss that toaster, I have a guestroom you can use until the waters cool down.

I've never had one make it more than 10 years and mine is expensive to replace because the well is so deep (685 feet). The last two went out during my 40th and 50th birthday year, so I'm anticipating I have around 6 more years on this one. Pardon my ignorance as I've never had a house on well water. How much would it cost to convert to sewer or septic? Or is it not possible because of how rural an area you live in. I am going to add my ignorance to yours andi9899. I always thought that it was either sewer or septic for waste water and city provided water lines or a well for supply. Am I totally off with that assumption? I really have no clue - all I have ever known is ,the city water and connection to sewers with the major diversion from that the city provided water going into some kind of holding tank in the yard when we lived in Bangkok. Oh, and the water there was not safe to drink without boiling so we had bottled water for consumption. But that is it: open faucet -> water comes out. Flush or drain and water goes away. City girl to the bones here LOL

I have this oatmeal chocolate chip recipe somewhere. It was a favorite of my sons and I want to make them again early August when DS2 and his family are here (or should I say the littles plus their parents LOL) but I have no idea where I put that recipe. Today I had a moment when I thought I knew where it could be. No such luck but as a result of that search another foot of books is set apart for donating so some good came out of the search anyway. Baby steps... Now I am firmly ensconced on the sofa with a cookbook that has some really good salads. Starting next week my weekly hikes with a friend will replaced with swimming in the pool here so I need to prepare lunch for afterwards. Looking forward to it.

Please never change the way you write Pink Cashmere. How e!se can we ever learn about ways language is used in different parts of the country? Your mention of Ebonics brought back a memory from around the turn of the century (I don't remember the year but this is close enough). At the time several schools in Oakland decided that they were going to teach kids in Ebonics - basically the language kids used in the playground. It led to a huge uproar from the parents even though many of them too spoke Ebonics to their kids. Their reasoning was simple: by teaching in Ebonics their kids would have a less solid English education making their already existing disadvantage in future corporate America even wider. It stuck with me because it was the exact same way I felt about my kids education: for school only formal English and Dutch would do (prior to introducing additional languages), Limburgs was used at home. As they grew up they learned to change from one language to another in the middle of a sentence if needed, depending on who joined the group. It has served them well

And talking about swimsuits. It hasn't been quite warm enough for me to go down to the pool. However, as of this week my weekly hikes with my friend are over for a while due to het back issues. So we decided that the walks will be replaced by swimming and that means I need to pull my swimsuit out..

translation issues. I can't understand some of what CG says without context sometimes. I had to read that one twice myself, actually. dialects are fun, said the linguists. regional slang is confusing if you're not from the region. how many times have y'all asked me what a packy or a rotary is? lol... I am not sure if you meant the bolded tongue in cheek but I do happen to agree with that statement. And its use here has expanded my vocabulary by added genteel swear phrases like "bless your heart"

i have noted that there is an attempt on the right to discredit the idea of viability and replace it with the idea that the fetus has human rights from the moment of conception. but viability really is the key issue for most people. without the mother, the unviable fetus will not survive. in those cases, it makes NO SENSE to grant the fetus rights that exceed the mother. those that take this position are fortunate in that at approximately the same time the fetus develops to a form that most would recognize as human, and many scientists speculate that consciousness occurs at about this same point. it seems REASONABLE to assert that the fetus has rights that are equal to the mother from midterm on. and indeed, most people agree with that.
ergo, that position has the widest agreement, and the least number of ethical/rights issues. close but not quite. If the rights would be equal there would not be a decision to be made in the rare occasion where something goes wrong and the situation is one where only either the mother OR the child can survive. We would need to leave the result up to fate as choosing one over the other would violate the rights of the one not chosen. I don't think that most people would be ok with leaving this to chance.

You can't possibly be this dumb and not get the difference between a living child and a clump of cells. I feel like you're saying stupid shit just to say stupid shit at this point. That is the issue you say a clump of cells I say at conception its a baby. I get it saying a clump of cells makes someone fell better with what they are about to do. You know denial and all that. She is still no better than the pos that goes and shoots a child. Well you can have "my" clump of cells, your "baby", and put it in a crib for all I care. Let's see how well you succeed in raising this "baby" Fortunately for you , you won't have to worry that I'll force you to live up to your claims - at 71yo the chance that I'll get pregnant again is just about a couple of decades in the past.

I am bothered by the fact that all those laundry/dishwasher pods I use are contributing to the micro plastic pollution. I am now looking at laundry detergent sheets when I need to buy new detergent but I can't find how well those really work. So questions for my virtual Village: has anyone tried these sheets? What brand did you use? And how well did they do the job? Trying to find some reviews that I can trust v. the Amazon reviews which seem a bit iffy to me for this product (as in are the 1-star/5- star reviews true or "bought" by the seller or their competitors?) The casing is made out of water soluble polyvinyl alcohol, not plastic. I don’t use these for laundry, but do the dishwasher. For laundry, I need to be able to rub detergent directly into the stain as I frequently miss my mouth. Handsoap works great for spots. Another "missed-my-mouth- here

i think it is time for women to choose to live somewhere where their bodies belong to them, while they still have the chance. i have another question. say that you are pregnant in a Red State and want to have a vacation or visit relatives in a Blue State. are the Red States going to insist that you stay put until your fetus is taken to term? are they going to put you in prison until you do? how will they stop you from just ...... f(*king....LEAVING? one way of getting around the highlighted in your post: Say the person is in their first trimester and live in a red state with draconian abortion laws. They move to a blue state where abortion is legal. They get a blue state driver's license and change their legal address to a blue state. They have their legal abortion in the blue state. They then move back to the red state with the draconian abortion laws. They did not have their abortion in the red state. Nor were they a resident of the red state at the time of the procedure. They were a resident of a blue state when they had their abortion. Red state cannot prosecute the person because they were not a citizen of the red state at the time of their abortion. Why in the world would any woman want to move back to a state that is willing to subject you to servitude to males and YOUR womb at best or ,alternatively, is willing to put YOUR life at risk for something you don't want to happen with your body in the first place?

I've wondered about the laundry detergent sheets too. I wonder how you adjust the amount of detergent for various size loads because my little undie load sure doesn't need as much as a queen bed sheet set etc. I got a bunch of samples of the Ecos sheets, and they have a guide on them that says 1 sheet for small and medium loads, two sheets for larger loads, etc. I'd get up and go look at exactly what they say, but I'm too lazy. But have you used them yet and how well do they clean?

Fence Wars update. Neighbors #1 and #2 are having second screaming match of the day-lots of F-bombs flying. I got a call about the first one which apparently ended with Crazy telling Sane she was going to sue him, and then telling him he needed to use a string line to make sure the fence was straight. He assured her he would, and then told her where he planned to get the string. And that's how the fight started. I must say, I'm rather entertained by your fence wars. Thanks for posting about it. I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend! and please keep us up to date - I need some entertainment/excitement on an otherwise quiet and lazy afternoon

And it still *DOES NOT AFFECT YOU PERSONALLY* so therefore you should get no say. It's MY body. My decision. I mean, seriously. What are you doing - personally - to support these unwanted babies after they're born? Are you helping to feed and clothe them? Adopting or fostering them? No? I thought not. Does a mass shooting affect you personally, what say do you have? I know you are passionate about people getting shot, killed, maimed. I am the same I am passionate about after conception, that there is a baby and their right to live is the same as you and I. Yes I do help cloth and feed children and adults. I donate my time and money to different charities and events. It is not your body once you are pregnant. That is a very interesting point of view. By the same token, if an unhoused person would get into your house because s/he needed shelter the house would no longer be yours but belong to both of you? You would just sit back and house and shelter and feed them until it would be safe for that person to go live somewhere else? Just prepare for a long term house guest as living on the streets is notoriously dangerous. And don't tell me that you bought and paid for your house. I pay daily to maintain the body you claim is no longer mine once an unwanted clump of cells takes residence, so how can you claim your home to be different?

Thanks Mich. I have to look at that recipe and see if I can pare that down to 2 servings max. I agree with you on the cheese as that was my main complaint about last night's version - I have no gruyere in the house.

What is a person to do when a huge 8lb of good looking onions is cheaper than an iffy looking 3lb bag in the grocery store? Well, while I know that I won't be able to use up that many onions by myself I bought the big bag. And now I am looking how to use even more onions than I already do. Today that means I will have onion soup for dinner. Yum (I hope) as this is an untested recipe!!! You buy the big bag and then make french onion soup. Or you give some onions to friends Covid changed my relationship with the freezer compartment of my fridge - always full.So it's like playing tetris in there - so onion soup and giving some to friends for the win. The soup I made last night was good but not great but it was a recipe for one so that worked. Now for some experimenting as I have the ingredients

I am seeing a new tablet in my near future. The one I have works perfectly fine but the battery is cr*pping out pretty fast. Fortunately the Fire tablet isn't terribly expensive but I hate the electronic waste replacing it creates.

If you want songs I hate wait until TG when the Christmas songs start blasting without let up. At the moment I am neutral about them but it takes just a few days until radio is replaced by CDs LOL.

There was one person who objected to it because she claimed it wasn’t educational and it ‘indoctrinated’ kids. ONE person. The other parents should take up a collection to pay for the first semester of school for her kids at one of those segregated religious schools they have down here in the South, where the white kids can be safely protected from the coloreds while they get a shitty education. And that is the scariest part of all the idiocy that we are seeing at the moment. Just ONE person can cause something to be banned. It used to be that people would step back if a crackpot like this opened his/her mouths and they would see how overboard this statement really is. Today it seems that in many areas people hear a protest like this and FOMO strikes without any evaluation to its validity: like OMG I could have been the first to protest. Let's be the first in "approving" this protest though... To paraphrase a famous poem First they came for the journalist and we said too little Then they came for the medical scientist and we fought a bit but decided we needed to get along Now they are coming after public education and we look away When the country's decline will be irreversible who will be left to speak up for it?

1300sqf living alone. Cleaning lady comes once a month to give everything a good scrubbing down. I pay her $105/session. As far as I am concerned her work is priceless as I hate cleaning and things would not get cleaned as well as they should without her! If/when I ever get to the point that my budget is getting really tight she would be among the last of my luxuries I am willing to give up.
