Sorry about your glasses Iggy aka IG ! Can you ask them to rush the new ones? I decided to reward myself with a gin and tonic after another long day on Zoom ... I opened the vacuum cleaner closet and couldn't find either the gin or the tonic. (It's next door to the fridge ... Clearly my brain is fried!!!) At least I was able to do two loads of laundry and run/empty the dishwasher, since I was WFH. Another long day tomorrow at school, which is less exhausting in some ways even though I have the commute. These days are well-paid and pay for my summer. But I just can't do as many anymore.

We've had a wonderful weekend with DS3 who leaves tomorrow. We spent two bad nights trying to see the Northern Lights, with no luck. My only goal for this week is to get through the week while keeping on top of the kitchen and laundry. I'm working all day Mon-Thurs (3 days from home, 1 at school). This isn't supposed to happen anymore! But I didn't do any prof/staff classes last week, and I have two more interview days this week, plus a 4h department meeting. ETA: I track how many Interview days I do every year. I did fewer last year because we went to Brittany with our friends from NY. I have too many this year, so I'll reduce slightly next year.

I ordered some cables last week. I also ordered a small case for cables for when we travel. Today I sorted all the cables and found two like the ones I just ordered. I gave one to DS3. I use those cables for my phone, electronic cigarettes and kindle. I want to be able to charge more than one item at a time. Now they're all together in a transparent case.

nikiz628 that's the same brand as the base we got. I was actually planning to get Zinus mattresses too, but I googled them, and saw there were class action lawsuits against them for using fiberglass in their mattresses!!! Apparently they don't use fiberglass anymore. But since I'm in Europe, I can't help but wonder if they're using Amazon here to get rid of their old stock. Apparently it's only a problem if the mattress cover rips, but I'd still rather not take a chance. I'm glad you got good mattress covers for them and that you're happy with them! We'll probably bite the bullet and go to the mattress store we used for our rental. DS2 got a mattress from there too, and he's happy with it. ETA: Here is one article about it. www.cbsnews.com/news/amazon-zinus-mattress-fiberglass-health-hazard-lawsuit/Clearly, as long as the mattress isn't open or torn, it's fine. But knowing this now, I prefer to get another brand that doesn't use fiberglass. That bed is where DS1/DDIL sleep. The grandkids are next door. As we all know, kids can do really dumb things.

We have two sets of garden shelves. We don't need both. I want to get it down to one and give DD the other for her basement storage room. Either DS1 will add it to his move, or we'll bring it to DD next time we visit.

This week is over! I'm off for 5 days. DS3 arrives tomorrow night. It's too early to start the semester countdown, but I'm 2/3 done.

As always, I'd be very happy to hear how other recent retirees are doing!
I do yoga once/week, and I have a private music lesson every other week. I suck at both, but I'm persistent LOL.

Also ... I checked out Costco mattresses. They don't seem to sell mattresses here in France.
I have a bunch of mattresses in my Amazon basket, but the descriptions are very inconsistent. IE it'll say medium firm in the title, and firm lower down, or vice-versa.
So I've decided to leave it for now. I'll keep checking Amazon, but we'll probably just go to the store we used for our rental at some point.
I am VERY happy we got the new base though!

As of last week, I'm done with classes for this semester and summer term. I'm now doing the interviews for prospective students, plus my 11 staff/faculty students. (All the retirees come out of the woodwork for those interviews LOL.) I signed up for one class at Job 1 in fall semester ... 2h/week, no marking. I'll be off for 6.5 weeks this summer, so DS1 convinced me to do one more class in fall. Also, 11 people is too many! I was planning to reduce those in January, but hopefully I'll lose one or two by attrition! Most of them have class every other week, so the teaching is very manageable ... it's the paperwork for 11 people that gets me down. So I'm still working, but still reducing every semester! PS Fall semester is short ... it lasts 16 weeks. Then we have two weeks off for Christmas. But spring semester segues into summer term which segues into the Bachelor interviews which segue into the Masters interviews. That lasts 27/28 weeks. This is my last year ever doing all that!!!

I planned to weed and sort the pots on the outdoor shelves too, but it was too cold. It's been raining nearly every day for weeks. It's much needed, but it's getting depressing. I'm at Job 2 on Mon and Tues, and off the rest of the week. (Wed and Thurs are holidays here.) Hopefully the weather will be better by then. DS3 arrives late Wed night and stays till Monday.

It's so nice that you're getting to know your new neighbors snapdragon ! We have very little planned for this weekend, just dinner out with friends tomorrow night, in a nearby suburb. And keeping up with kitchen and laundry.

Rukh O'Rorke you earn a great salary, and it makes me sad to see you so stressed out about money. I hope that the Rukh Inc check comes in, and that the garden takes off! NastyWoman when I moved from the US in the early 80s, there was such a thing as "book rate" ... it was very cheap to ship books at that rate, by boat. I don't know if that still exists or not, or if CDs would be covered in that rate. If not, it's OK if it costs to move the things you love and use and want to keep.

My brain is fried after doing 8h of interviews online. Job 2 cancelled a half-day next week, and frankly I'm thrilled!!! azucena I'd probably do the text too ... it just makes life easier to write it, send it and done. Thank you for the mattress recommendation seriousthistime ! I will see if they carry that brand here. We have a lot of beds! There's our (queen) bed, DS2's (between a double and a Queen), DS3's (between a double and a Queen), DS1's room/the guest room (between a double and a Queen), and DD's room (a trundle bed, so two twins). For the sheets ... I have two sets per bed. I don't like waiting till the bedding is washed before putting on clean bedding, I like to make up the bed as soon as I strip it. I also prefer bigger comforters, but the one we have now in the guest room is down. I don't want to pay to replace it with a bigger one. If DS1 asks for it, I'd probably give it to him, but we'd replace it with a bigger synthetic one from Ikea. Good bedding is expensive!!! PS Typing all that out made me realize I should probably get a European mattress. Those beds are 140 cm wide, and apparently the closest US mattresses are 135cm or 152 cm wide ... Thanks again for all your help!

Just make sure if you get a foam mattress that you get a mattress pad/extra cover.snapdragon I was sort of hoping to avoid that. I figure if I have to pay extra for that, I may as well buy a better/firmer/more expensive mattress. Knee Deep in Water Chloe Costco is an excellent idea! Unfortunately the closest one is 50 min away. DH's good friend (from Texas) is a member. Sometimes he invites DH to go there with him. Thank you both! ETA: Knee Deep in Water Chloe I will see if they can be ordered from Costco online here too... I'm sure DH's friend would be happy to order one for us.

anciana we may well just bite the bullet and pay more at a physical store where we can try them out. As you say, the reviews are very subjective. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

ETA: I edited my initial post ... OUR mattress was bought online, but not on Amazon. DS2's grandparents gifted him a double bed when he turned 18. We ordered the same mattress.

anciana thank you for answering!!! Ikea standard beds are 200 cm long, and we need 190 cm in that room, because the room is tiny. We went to Ikea a couple of weeks ago to check out the two mattresses they have in that size, and we didn't like them. (DH said, this mattress feels dead.) Ikea has a much bigger choice in 200 cm long mattresses. PS In France both 190 and 200 cm are considered "standard" lengths.

I asked this the other day, but I didn't get a response, so I'll ask again... Has anyone here ever bought a mattress on Amazon? Our mattress was ordered online, but not from Amazon. It is AMAZING, and it was expensive. As I've said, DS1 will be taking his futon mattress to his new house. We replaced the bed base. There's no rush, but we'll need to replace the mattress too at some point. I don't want to spend a lot, because that room is the guest room. I want a decent mattress, but it doesn't need to sing and dance LOL. We all prefer a firm mattress. Any suggested brands? (Not stores, because we don't have the same stores here.) Thanks! :-)
