ooh.....that was a major case study in an Engineering Disasters class I took in college. I should look that miniseries up. funny that you talk about this today, yesterday I strayed from SVU or Forensic Files for background noise in favor of something on Discovery that looked at engineering disasters. as for me, I dozed off downstairs again last night watching The Voice. woke up to an alarm I'd set to sign off something after my European counterpart reviewed when he got in to work. I'd planned to shut the laptop down afterward, but he's got a comment the site needs to address before I can sign....and the site isn't online for another couple hours. so I asked my team to just text me once it's all set and I'll pop back on to print/sign. as for my day off, it's sNOwing here today. whatever I thought I was doing today, probably isn't happening the same way I thought. maybe I'll go take a nap.

I took the most pitiful pic of Punk an hour or so ago, she climbed up into "LD's chair" to look out the window. she's currently curled up in said barrel chair, and snoring. I've been on the phone almost literally all day the past 2d, save for the 2h I spent today just aimlessly driving around with them both hanging out the windows. I just sent back the last thing that had to be signed today, and once I put the OOO message up, I'm closing this laptop til Thursday morning. I won't say that my GAF is completely busted, b/c I do actually care about product quality etc, but my sense of urgency for anything has left the building. I'll absolutely still work in Good Quality Practices, but I'm working at my own pace, which doesn't account for anyone else's mistakes becoming a 'crisis' for me.
have a great night, kids! I may check in on my phone later.

Folks who live in our state know that climate change is a real thing (of course, we've got a few deniers here too, but oh well). We've just set a record for the least snow EVER since they started keeping records, for the month of November (we just got a dusting of snow). And later this week, we're hitting 50 degrees, which just doesn't happen in December in this part of the country. In a "normal" year, we should have at least a foot of snow on the ground, but some folks think climate change isn't a big deal. Until it affects the ability of a farmer to harvest crops that is. Then, it's probably getting to be too late to fix the problem. And climate change is wreaking a different sort of havoc in my neck of the woods. The Great Lakes are the source of lake effect snow, which is usually happens mostly in late fall/early winter and late winter/early spring. Why? Because the lake waters have to be above a certain temperature to generate the lake effect snow. With the warmer temps, the lake stays open and warm longer, meaning longer lake effect snow periods, and the warmer waters produce even more snow. The end result: Syracuse, Watertown, Buffalo, Rochester, and the Tug Hill are getting absolutely pounded. well, but I got an entire season's worth of snow in about 36h 2 winters ago. climate change is so made up!

I was just at the dentist this morning, so this discussion is timely. For 30 years, I never had a cavity. Not one. Ever. Then, I had children. I did not throw up during pregnancy. I still had cleanings every six months. I take fantastic care of my teeth. I waterpik. I floss. I brush. I had braces at 12 - I was still wearing my retainers almost every night at 30. But, I had children. And with one child, I had gestational diabetes. Turns out, sometimes pregnancy and breastfeeding and gestational diabetes can rot your teeth. I had something like 13 cavities after my pregnancies (2 kids less than 2 years apart). At 30, I had my first ever shot of Novocain. Now, I have had 2 root canals and 2 crowns. 1 crown failed due to dentist ineptitude, took what was left of my tooth and resulted in an implant (that originally failed but finally took). Today, I had a full set of x-rays and thankfully everything is looking good. This is all to say - do what you can to take care of your teeth but sometimes it just doesn't matter. But I highly recommend the dentist. Find a good one and stick with them! I was with my first dentist for 30 years, he retired and got in a quack (failed crown), left him within a year and love my new practice. this!! I was blessed with fantastic teeth, and I'm very thankful for that. the only fillings I have are between upper molars on both sides, from when my teeth were too crowded to properly clean/floss. I've successfully completed Invisalign, and now need floss after eating seaweed salad, like any other normal person. I found my current dentist while researching Invisalign in my late 20s. I went in for the consult, and they took molds for the trays before removing my wisdom teeth. yeah, it's like that. I was so traumatized by going to the dentist as a child that once I graduated college and was on my own, I didn't go back to the dentist til I found this office. my parents told me they would pay for the Invisalign if I wanted to go that route.....that seemed like a solid kick in the ass. anyway, I needed a quadrant scaling first, then a marathon wisdom tooth extraction session* before I could start Invisalign. I ask every cleaning, am I still the record holder for the longest case? yep. anyway, this dentist is near my old condo. I've been driving an hour each way to go to this specific office since 2015 when I moved to the Cape. I will continue to do so as long as my current Dr and hygienist are still there. I'm completely at ease going in now, which is just crazy. *I told the oral surgeon when she asked about two different appointments, that if she took 2 from one side and I didn't like how it all went, she wasn't seeing me again for the other two. so we agreed to take all four at the same time.

I should probably start updating earlier, so I make the cut for the smileys updates more often. lol... the one balance I'm still racing, the payment posts on the 28th of each month. in searching for my most recent post to grab my tagline, it looks like I never bothered to update last month. oops! anyway, I'm still chugging along on this. my minimum payment is $200-something/mo but when I dropped to just this one card for the race, I upped my regular payment to $500/mo. this will be knocked out for good in 2024. hell, if the card sends me another promo for the life of the balance, I'll pay it off from savings and then consolidate the projects onto that so I can build up more liquid savings. but, I digress. chiver78 12/5/23 $8223.32 (5/9/20 $138,495.31)

That applies to anyone who pays their own bills. It's not reserved to any one particular age group. It's the reason that I pay people to do most repairs on my house: because me doing it would cost me time that I choose to spend elsewhere. I just happen to not mind driving. If I did mind it, I certainly wouldn't have completed so many cross country trips in my lifetime...with more in my future. Well, not really. I pay my own bills and have more time than money, so if I can fix something on my own I will even if it takes me a lot longer than having someone else do it. this. I just looked it up, it's $139/yr. mine renews in August, so it's been a minute. for me, I initially signed on for Prime when I cut cable in favor of streaming services on Fire Sticks - Amazon's platform. I have a number of things on subscription orders as well, which probably wouldn't be the case if I wasn't already paying for Prime. I also tend to buy things as an "oh shit, I didn't realize I was out of X" than planning big orders. so that alone justifies the annual fee for me haha. I've never been a huge movie person, but when I earn digital credits for some purchases, it's a nice perk to be able to skate on paying to 'rent' a movie via the streaming platform as well.

I saw a FB meme over the weekend. it was something about the current generation going out on a Tuesday night and calling off work the next day. but those of us of a certain age went out, rolled in sideways with enough time to brush teeth and get to the office still dressed in last night's clothes with the bar stamp on the back of a hand. he's practicing, so he can join the adults at the table. 😉 I don't think I could pull it off at this age, but I did that when I was younger. Go home to S/S/S and go to work. I might die if I tried that now. And I WFH! lol....same on all counts.

I've looked a couple of times, but must have missed the picture/s of the twins andi9899 . By chance, can they be posted again? Was really looking forward to seeing what your fur babies looked like. I haven't had a chance to post them yet, the pics she sent me are a smidge too big to be attachments to posts here. I need to crop a little bit. ETA: thank you for the reminder. I'll try to do that today.

Random but the dental conversation reminded me of something new I learned from a friend last week...here's an excerpt of her fb post that she's given permission to share: "My untreated hearing loss has been *causing* brain damage. For 25+ years. I always thought of hearing as an ear problem, and that when I finally got around to getting hearing aids, that would fix everything. But my brain has actually been shrinking, and while there will be some improvement in memory and cognitive function with hearing aids, the brain will not bounce back. That significantly increases my risk for some form of dementia as I continue to age." wow! I definitely would never have connected the two.

BUT I had to be at work the next afternoon. I considered just renting a car and driving home, because I was worried about getting to work on time the next day. A 5-6 hour drive vs a flight less than an hour, but my flight had already been delayed for as long as it would’ve taken me to drive home. We were finally able to fly out, and I got home in the wee hours of the morning. This is why I hate when my kid does these long weekend jaunts in the middle of the semester. It's not like we don't get snowstorms shutting down airports around here! At least he got a good taste of what can happen without it being a more than one day deal. On a heating pad right now. At the store this morning, I slipped on a piece of plastic that was on the floor. It was a stiff sheet, about the size o& my foot and my foot went sliding. Luckily, I didn't go down, but wrenched my back. I had to get m6 nails under it to pick it up to toss so no one else slipped on it. ugh, I'm so sorry 😞

as a personal aside, i actually worry that those on the right DO see Trump the way i do, and simply don't give a shit. THAT is terrifying. well, if the negatives don't affect them, why would they care? that's terrifying to me as well. and the general attitudes about COVID around the country helped solidify to me where we are as a country.

Well that maybe so in your eyes in mine I don't think Trump is that much of a danger to the US than leftist policies. I just don't want him in due to all the drama and I really don't think much would get accomplished unless republicans have the house and senate. If I lived in a swing state I would still vote third party. To be honest I vote third party and Trump still wins the election I would not be devastated. It must really drive you crazy that half of this country don't see Trump the way that people on this board does. How about you put the kool-aid down and come on over to our side. what leftist policies? all that touchy-feely stuff she doesn't like. y'know, like equal civil rights.

D u m p is a dirty word, now? that's it - that is replaced by just removing it. there's a few various alternate (original) spellings of Trump's family name, and similar misspellings that are censored at this point. the Politics forum got a lot spicy for awhile. unfortunately, the censored words list applies across the whole board, so all have to play by the same rules. sorry that's not all that helpful. but, you can edit to include the spaces between letters in your post. you're clearly not talking about 45 here.

well, you wouldn't be able to edit weltz's post, so there shouldn't be an edit button visible to you on her post. I have an edit button on every post as a moderator. regular posters are only able to edit their own posts. weltz - is it possible for you to take a screenshot of what you're seeing? I can check on the PB site to see if anyone else has seen this issue. I'm not seeing anything in particular. I tried to change 'of snow' to ' of snow', and no matter how often I try to edit and hit 'save changes', nothing happens. looking at this particular post, I'm going to guess that something in your original content was an automatically censored word. if you can comment again with what you wanted to say, and put a space in between each letter, I can check the banned list. ETA - I'm not seeing "of snow" as the replacement text for any of the censored words in our list. I'll head on over to the PB support site and see if there's any similar cases.

Also depending on how long it's been since you have seen the doctor, they may have destroyed the records. When the tmj drove me to find a new oral surgeon, they wanted my prior records. I figured out who it was and when from my receipts/EOBs. Called only to find out that my records were destroyed since I was last there in 2016. Definitely agree with azucena especially since in my experience the prior records may not even exist anymore. my stuff's definitely been destroyed, then. the last time I saw my GP was right after I left my 1st adult job, but before the health insurance lapsed. I needed a refill on the clonazepam that the job had created a need for. that was 2015. oops. I did go poking around on Google a few months back, she isn't at the same practice, either. so if my records weren't destroyed, would they stay with the practice? or follow the Dr? the practice was a pretty good sized building, with many specialties in different offices within the building. one-stop shopping for most things. the reason I haven't kept up with stuff is that the office was near my old condo, an hour away. I no longer need the clonazepam, I don't take BC, and I'm generally a pretty healthy individual. I also have a massive case of white coat syndrome, and it took me years of arguing with the intake nurses to put my intake BP on a post-it note and I'd ask the Dr to take it again on my way out. my BP goes up when I walk into a medical office, even if I'm not there to be seen. on the handful of occasions I've needed meds (strep, UTI, whatever) since I moved to the Cape, I just go to Urgent Care.

tonight I'm making butternut risotto in the Instant Pot, to be a side for turkey cutlets and some roasted Brussels sprouts. there's enough turkey for at least three meals, but I'll figure out fresh veggie options each meal.
yesterday, I made a 6qt Dutch oven sized batch of minestrone soup for the week. I had a cup for lunch today, and I'm sure it will be dinner at least once this week.

it's a good thing my phone is on mute b/c the dogs have been barking all day. I definitely just had no filter in speaking out loud something I've been thinking - "Would you let the woman speak?!" this pushy woman on my side of the call happens to be the one that wouldn't hesitate to throw me under the bus when I was having issues with account access on one of our Quality Systems a couple years back. we're on a production call with one of my sites, and her pattern has been to ask a question, let the site contact start answering, and then speak OVER HER to argue with her about the answer she hasn't listened to, but knows she doesn't like. FFS...let the woman answer your question before you start to shit on the answer.

fan-fucking-tastic. the dirt road immediately behind the house across the street is completely full of trucks and heavy machinery for excavation and paving. obviously it's worse for K b/c it's literally *right there* but I don't have the bandwidth to be shooing LD to shush while I'm on calls today. it's going to be a very long day, it has been already.

Not the point, though. If the kid wanted a pair of Air Jordan’s, I don’t care. I realize when you choose to give, that you lose control. I just want to make sure that this is the CHILD’S Christmas, not to pay for the parents to party. .Unless there's a way you find out who this family is and what they eat, there is no way to know how it is going to be used. For the angel trees at church, they use numbers to identify families. Because all parties are supposed to remain anonymous. I'd just return the tag or have your sister do it. So what if the caregiver normally sacrifices and decides to get themselves their favorite adult drink as a treat. Would that be so awful? that's what I was getting at with the air jordan's. The shoes could be a special treat. Just because people are poor doesn't mean they don't deserve any fun/special.
there's also knowing the area you're in. Walmart in MA doesn't sell alcohol, and I think cigarettes are also out (I use self-checkout, so I don't see the register racks). if my Walmart sold alcohol, I'd look sideways at a giving tree tag that asked for a blanket GC. I don't frequent any houses of worship to know what their giving trees look like for tags, but there's also trees in the big box stores. so there's that.

a paring knife is definitely a small knife, yes. I don't peel cukes often, but when I do it's after I've already chopped a good sized chunk, and I just use the chef's knife when the chunk is on its side. I'm actually a little surprised that this didn't ring a bell for you, from a childhood novel that I read in school....I'd have figured you did as well - The Great Brain, by John D Fitzgerald. one of the stories told was how the title character 'bought' help in completing his punishment at boarding school - peeling potatoes, and how they were found out - by the telltale marks on the hand from the paring knife. looked up the book. Looks like I was a senior in high school (or a bit older) when first published. Not required reading in senior year. We young men at least were more worried about being drafted and dying for nothing in the Vietnam war than paring/peeling potatoes. ah, shit. you're that much older than I am. my bad. I didn't realize it was published that late, the stories were set quite early 1900s.

I did takeout last night - a huge chicken Caesar salad. the chicken is fresh grilled to order, so the first thing I did when I got home was to remove all of the chicken from the salad (I have never come close to finishing a salad from this place in one shot lol....) I served myself a big salad bowl and dressed just that, with the dressing that came on the side.
tonight's dinner was the rest of last night's salad, with fresh croutons. $13 for two meals, that works.

I didn't click the link, but "peeling tool" ?? it's called a paring knife. I don't peel potatoes. When I make mashed potatoes I keep the skins on. Looking up paring knife, it is a knife. When taking the skin off a cucumber, I use a vegetable peeler. And I would use that on a potato too. Therefore, peeling tool. a paring knife is definitely a small knife, yes. I don't peel cukes often, but when I do it's after I've already chopped a good sized chunk, and I just use the chef's knife when the chunk is on its side. can you bring back the card? I'm with you on your reservations. I also used to pull tags off the trees when I was still doing holiday shopping on the regular. I'd seek out the older kids, or the young adults looking for a coat, for instance. there was a tree at Walmart when I went in this morning, and I had a similar feeling to what you posted here, so I didn't even look.

I'm sitting here watching the evening news, and apparently there will be a vote on an impeachment inquiry on President Biden this week.
don't worry, I won't be holding my breath waiting on scgal to admit she was wrong.

In my mailbox this morning was this article about easy peeling of potatoes. Supposedly, no peeling tool needed. A Simple Trick for Peeling a Potato, No Peeler RequiredEven if you have one, you might end up preferring this genius technique. Complete article here: A Simple Trick for Peeling a Potato, No Peeler RequiredHow is that a trick? I could have them all peeled and cleaned before all that falderall! I didn't click the link, but "peeling tool" ?? it's called a paring knife.

I'm being productive today. ish. I went to Walmart before most folks were awake, I read the Sunday paper cover-to-cover, and I just finished cooking off 3lbs of ground turkey and wilted kale for the pups. next up is a big pot of minestrone for myself this week. it's been grey and rainy here all day, so it's not a high energy day for any of us.
Drama- that bear is adorable.
ETA- shit. and I didn't even look at the housewares section for Corelle bowls. 🤦♀️ it wasn't on the list. grr....

the last thing I wanted to do when I got home was get back in the car, but the pups had been cooped up 5h. so we took a scenic tour back to the old neighborhood where I picked up some deli stuff. now I'm waiting on my chicken Caesar salad from the Greek pizza place near my house. pups and I will all have dinner when we get home.
stick a fork in me, I'm done for today.
