Republicans should be embarrassed beyond belief by the Alabama bill.
I still can't get past the fact their female governor actually signed it. I feel like she must have been bullied beyond belief, blackmailed, etc.
Did the women in Alabama even protest this bill? I haven't seen anything in the news about it, which doesn't mean it didn't happen...I limit my news watching these days. It is just too scary and depressing.

"this bill has the opportunity to save the lives of millions of unborn children" My children are thankful for abortion...most likely wouldn't be walking this earth if their mother would have been forced to have a baby (years before I ever met her). I rolled my eyes out of my head with the millions quip. These are the same people who lament everyone "on the dole". We don't have the infrastructure or money for millions of unwanted kids given up to the states.

I told hubs if younger I would consider leaving this country, he said Canada sounds pretty good. I just don't think I could handle the winters there. Can't even believe I wrote that but this country is becoming something I'm not proud of. And we are peddling backwards, idiocy. I say it will take care of itself eventually but all these rich old white people would have to go and its set up for their heirs to keep their money.

Excellent article. Too bad there isn't a good solid movement around that. I would donate and possibly become involved. It would be awesome for people on both sides of the spectrum to back something like this instead of what we are doing now.

She makes more than me and she's at a 0.9 FTE...now if she could just get that extra 0.1 we would be rolling in the dough! Lol

Double hypocrisy - these kinds of bills primarily impact poor women who can't afford to travel to another state or country for the procedure, and it's the poor 'welfare queens' who the far right most aggressively attacks for being 'leeches on society.'

If shit keeps going downhill, I would definitely consider fleeing to Canada. I could put in for a transfer within my company. Their headquarters are in Montreal, and I don't speak French, but they have offices all over Canada. I'm not so much worried about weather as I am my ability to be employed in another country.
I used to joke about it with my mom, but its becoming a more serious consideration each day.

Well, in defense of the Alabama governor, when she signed it she stated it was unenforceable, this is just a way to advance a bill to the SC to overturn Roe vs Wade.
That's how she justified it, anyway.

Republicans have gotten so over the top that the nation may completely flip to electing a complete socialist. It isn't necessarily what I want to see happen but if it does it is their own dumb ass fault.

If you can conduct your work in English, you'll be fine. Most people in Montreal are bilingual, if not trilingual. Living here is a hoot! It's a fun city, not to mention stunningly beautiful. Come on up. The weather's not THAT bad. No worse than the northern USA.

That's....not really better. Instead of just getting rid of abortion in Alabama, they want to get rid of access everywhere.
Part of me almost wishes the ACLU and others would refuse to take the bait, and let these laws stand. Let the people in these conservative hell pits fix their own problems via the ballot box.

Overturning Roe doesn’t make abortion illegal. It would effectively deem laws banning abortion as constitutional. It would become a state issue then. So.., the same thing. Allowing it under the current rules is dangerous and gives nothing.

I lived in Olympia, Washington at the time, and there was a big event that happened called "Hands Across the Border" where the US girl scouts had a day of fun and games with Canada's girl scouts. It was something I will never forget, and I have loved Canada ever since.
Plus, I'm getting pretty tired of the warm weather in California.

Canada has ZERO abortion laws. Oddly enough, countries with very liberal abortion laws have fewer abortions per capita. Countries with restrictive abortion laws have more. Go figure. HEALTH CARE Abortion rates go down when countries make it legal: report Countries with stricter abortion laws have higher abortion rates www.nbcnews.com/health/health-care/abortion-rates-go-down-when-countries-make-it-legal-report-n858476CANADA: Canada has a low rate of abortion compared to other industrialized countries. It’s also home to one of the lowest rates of abortion-related complications and maternal mortality in the world. Canada is the only democratic, industrialized nation in the world with no laws restricting abortion. The federal government and provincial jurisdictions have all indicated that they do not plan on returning to the abortion debate, signaling that current laws are suffice. globalnews.ca/news/209879/abortion-in-canada-and-the-u-s/

I guess it's because countries with liberal abortion laws have comprehensive sex ed, easy access to contraceptives, and easy-to-get morning after pills. None of this "Pledge your virginity to daddy" bullshit, or "abstinence is best", which is hardly realistic.

I know they will fight it, and they should, but sometimes my schadenfreude rears it's head. This is going to end up on the SCOTUS docket before it's all said and done, and I'm not at all confident Roe won't be overturned. I also have little doubt that entire swaths of the country will jump at the chance to ban it out right.
I will always reject the notion that basic human rights are a "state's rights issue".

Just like slavery. Just because you think god said so, you can't keep people of a certain race as slaves.

You mean an ass backwards culture on human rights isn't on the forefront of prosperous industries that tend to be *gasp* progressive? No one wanted to go to frigging Alabama when they were ass backwards, now really no one wants to now that they're completely ass backwards.
