Snow is supposed to start this evening, 4 to 6 inches. Once the snow ends, the wind chill warning goes in to effect--until Thursday at this time.
If that is the case, dad is not going to the grocery store with me. He refuses to dress properly in case I would have car trouble or get in an accident.

Are you expecting the wind chills of 40 below that my brother is supposed to get? I wouldn't leave the house in those conditions. I'm not sure I'd get out of bed -- it's much warmer under the covers!

minus 40 to minus 50. Will turn the heat up a few degrees to keep pipes from freezing.
I like to have the fire going and it's in the living room. Otherwise, I'd stay under the covers.

Has the nasty even hit you yet? We're looking at Tuesday through Thursday for the temps of -25 with wind chills much worse. I mostly feel awful for the deer and other wildlife. it seemed nasty enough friday - but after a brief respite on Monday, lows of -16 on Tuesday and -21 on Wednesday. Come in little kitty!! I still haven't even seen him since this ministry began. We've had snow intermittently and every morning, fresh paw prints! I actually last saw him about 3-4 months ago, but DD reported seeing him in the yard recently. Why I know which kitty it is. Use to see a tuxedo around as well. She/he too is welcome. You are SO nice to do all of this. And to care. (((hugs)))

My husband won't dress for extreme cold either. I just throw a coat in the car when we go. He can grumble all he wants but I have seen him need it before.

That's our forecast as well for Southern MN. They say we're going to break 20 year old records. Our high today is going to be 64 but tomorrow "they" say we could conceivably see a "flake" most likely just really cold and rain. But we'll be back up to 70 or so by Sunday.
I can't even comprehend that kind of cold. But I know everyone is used to it and more importantly prepared for anything thrown your way. Stay warm and safe.

High was 75 Saturday and Sunday with a high of 72 expected today. However, rain is expected the end of the week so highs will drop to 60.
My father grew up near Chicago and I like to say that as a child he told me scary stories of negative wind chill factors!

I don't think anyone around here is used to -35 without the wind chill which is now what they're saying. I'm supposed to take Carrot to his orthopedic appointments on Wednesday during the worst of it. It's an out of town trip and usually a lot of parking lot walking to get from parking to the clinic. Not looking forward to that at all. Still...mostly concerned about the wildlife.

I would think -35 could bring on frost bite but not up on that. And the fact that the ortho dr and staff will brave it also says a lot!! I know places don't shut down but I admire those who carry on like it's the norm.

At -35 the gas in your car can freeze up while you're driving.

My plan was to coast into retirement with the old mr. pup and when he passed away I would travel extensively for the early 5 or so years of retirement. I held firm against many as DD begged incessantly for cats for years. But then the big boy was a very tough case, when finally got him in vet was ready to put him down without any testing because he was a balding skeleton with this dead hallow look in his eyes. I just wanted him to have a few weeks or months of the good life if he was going to go over. He lived under a cabinet in the bathroom for 6 months and now he is a pampered fat cat that will snuggle for hours. And what can you do when they homeless and in danger? And then I feel like they are attached and then I get attached, and it seems that strays are really on the rise and I guess I am doing my part. Taking them, getting them fixed. I am ok with tending ferals outdoors too, but so far they are all domesticatable. Now I'll never get my semi-decade of extensive worry/pet-free travel, and likely spend the equivalent cash on cat food and litter! Little girl was over 1k in vet bills just to start with. We'll see what happens with the new one. He seems really feral.

Where you at? Northeast Iowa I can't tell if it's still snowing or if it's just snow blowing off my roof. We got about 6 inches of snow overnight and the wind is blowing. My car is in the garage and I can't get out because of a large drift of snow. Neighbor will plow me out when he gets home from work. I think I will be spending more on snow removal this month than I have in any month since I moved here 10 years ago.

I cancelled my dental appointment for today last week when I saw the forecast. I'm retired. I don't go out in this weather. It's too dangerous. I will never, ever get used to it. It's not safe to be outdoors when it's this cold. That is why there may be no school all week here--or maybe only Friday. I have turned the heat up and will start the car each day. Otherwise, I'm hunkering down until it's over. I have enough food, etc. to get me through.

MPL - can you reschedule Carrot's ortho appointment?
It's not your worth the risk to go out at -35 or whatever. It's not worth frost bite or frozen gas while driving!

We're going. She's booked a couple months out and I'm guessing school will be cancelled, so bonus, he won't be marked as absent. I'm picking up some bottles of Heet on the way home today to put in the gas tank to prevent lines freezing and I'll make sure to have extra warm clothes thrown in the van in case we break down as well as the portable jump starter in case the battery goes dead at the clinic.

MPL, are you going to call before you go to make sure they are open? I don't want all that can-do attitude wasted.

I would think they'd call me if they are cancelling appointments. Ours isn't until 11:30, so not a first thing in the morning deal. I just got the robo call a few minutes ago to confirm the appointment. I mean, as long as the van doesn't break down we're fine. Heated house, sort of heated garage, heated van, heated clinic. Just that brisk little jaunt from the van to the clinc through the parking lot.

It will be fine for a few days until the weather warms up a little bit.

Even WE weren't used to that.A couple of days, sure, but 24 days? It was horrible, and I suspect it will get worse. Climate change brings weather extremes. We were warned.

My DH's PT appointment for tomorrow was cancelled and rescheduled for Friday. He would have kept it, despite the drive. The weather forecast for tomorrow seems similar to today's weather turned out to actually be, but there aren't any warning issued for it (yet). It really doesn't look bad at all from the inside of my house. We do seem more protected the wind here, though. We were forecast to get 8-10 inches of snow, but got probably half of that.
We are nearly out of wine. The store was out of our preferred vintage last night. Might have to venture out for that.

My neighbour's cat is always outside, even in subzero temps. Sometimes, he comes crying at my door, and I've been letting him in to warm up. Sushi doesn't like it. They sit about a meter apart and growl and hiss at each other. That's about the extent of it. No fights.
