Work has been super challenging and I've just been running from one meeting, one deadline, to another. I'm pretty exhausted!
Been shopping on lunch, way home from work, and just getting enough for a meal or two at time, carrying the lot over a not very good commute of 2 buses and train - frequently not getting a seat, and occasionally walking up to a mile.
Now it seems a polar vortex has descended and I am working from home but there is not a lot to eat, and the bad weather will be ongoing throughout the 10 day forecast.
I put a quantity of beans to soak, but have no onions or potatoes, one serving of pasta, a few of rice, and not much of anything else. Well - I do have a lot of nuts and seeds from a recent raw spree, but nothing to go with it! I won't starve, but nothing very satisfying is on the horizon.
Probably going to do a prime delivery from whole foods! Thank goodness that is an option. At least - I hope it is! not sure if they are inundated and/or delivery folks working given the safety issues.
who's holed up?
Where you prepared?

So far, we've only been holed up for under 24 hours. We got enough snow that school was canceled on Wednesday. I'm anticipating that next Monday will be another snow day. We're looking to get 9 inches of snow, mostly by noon.
Otherwise, today, yes windchill advisories. But, school goes on...and we need to leave the house to get them there and back. Still have after school activities, practices, and the like. Only one of my side job venues closes when public schools close, since it's a daycare/after school provider. I've rescheduled a few lessons so I can rely on public transportation on Monday, instead of having to drive to multiple places in town.
We'll just go grocery shopping on Saturday or Sunday, as normal. I may have DH stock up on some staples for baking to help the "I'm booooooreds." No matter how busy we get, we make sure we're on top of things like diapers and food...especially with having a 1st grader and a baby in the house. They can't fend for themselves like my teen or DH and I can. My 11 year old ins't quite there yet.

We are pretty good on staples. I try to stay stocked up because it makes cooking at home easier. So far in 2019 we have eaten out far less than last year. It might get boring but we'd make it. There's plenty of pasta and a freezer full of hamburger and pork. My family bought a cow and pig to split last year.
I think the polar vortex is supposed to push east next week? I'm off today and going shopping for a few things that we are out of. No olive oil or bread, milk running low and so on.

Would gladly open the door to him, at least temporarily, but although I put out food and water when I see him that is usually not too often, I do see his footprints in the yard a lot, but if I put out unknown food, it attract rats, well - what do rats do in winter? maybe they are hibernating? but hoping the food will attract him to the shelter.

Life goes on here despite the cold. My horses and goats are holed up though. I made them stay inside today and they probably will just be getting partial time outside this weekend then back into the barn for the work week. They will not be happy about this at all. I am going to stop at the farm supply store on the way home and stock up on bedding for the stalls. I feel so bad for the deer and other wild animals when it gets this bad. Especially when it's so long.

High here next Wed is -6, that's like 50% colder if my math holds up. I'm pretty sure that's how temperature works. Rats go inside to live in your walls in the winter.

Can't relate. My larder never gets that bare. I consider it dire circumstances way before that for groceries. It would take at least 2 weeks for me to get to your point.

I am a country person and semi prepper. I'm guessing we could eat at least 2 months. Not going to say everything would taste wonderful as I would soon run out of milk and eggs. I do have shelf stable milk but not as much anymore as I would forget to use it and it would go bad. Also right now not many potatoes on hand, but I have frozen.
You can substitute applesauce for milk and water in a pinch, not the best taste but with seasonings could make it palatable.
I have one small freezer with corn, strawberries, peaches. The other has biscuits, bacon, chicken, turkey, beef, pork, flour, eggos, blueberries, blackberries, in it and more, its a big chest freezer and its full. The garage fridge, yogurt, cabbages, extra milk and eggs, celery, carrots, bell peppers. Sodas and dog food is out there too.
Basement storage, shelves of canned goods, beans, fruits, juices, lots of beans, broth. Home canned fruits and lots of veggies. A few buckets of rice and wheat. Half gallons of oils.
Kitchen pantry full of fruits and veggies plus cake and brownie mixes. Freezer drawer full of food.
Needless to say we can survive for awhile. I have sealed packages of heir loom seeds for summer. Lots of other items, I keep Life Straws for each of us and have boxes of matches vacced sealed. I was not as stocked up with Obama, but still had a few weeks, since trump I have ramped back up on stocks.
Also have cases of TP and paper towels, plenty of soaps and cleaning products and laundry detergent. Have some fuel back for the generators. We are good.

Although I’m pretty sure DD and DH would mutiny before we completely cleaned out the pantry and freezer. I even have dry milk in the freezer—I use it in a couple of bread recipes. I remember walking a mile downhill to a convenience store when my college town had 18 or so inches of snow. Interstates we’re closed, so the university was, too. We had to get to the convenience store. I needed contact solution. And beer. That we literally carried a mile uphill in snow up to our knees!!

Get a heated outdoor dog bowl for those stray kitties! Mine was about $30 off Amazon and only turns on when the temps reach about 35f. So I leave it plugged in year round. For the humans, we aren't planned to have bad weather here on the west coast but i am a tiny bit of a prepper (war zone parents). I keep dehydrated foods for making soups and chili. So I can always rustle up some decent foods no matter how low the pantry gets or how busy work is.

We could dig into the non-preferred food in the cupboard. My kids could live on Hot dogs and cereal, which we have a lot of. It's not pleasant going outside in those conditions, but we have Aldi, Meijer and Walmart all just a mile away. We go there in most kinds of weather. Better parking spots are open when the weather is crap.

Despite the fact that DS just posted a picture yesterday to his friends of our fridge because it contained just 10 cans of RediWhip, a 12 pack of Diet Pepsi, some beer and 6 dozen eggs, we'd make it quite a while. Our pantry and freezer are full.

We are probably good for a week before we start running out of fresh fruit and veggies. I just went to the store yesterday, so we are good. We also have enough canned and dry things and meats in the freezer that we could easily eat another week or 2 on just that stuff.
Before we went on vacation last month, I cleaned out the refrigerator and freezer and got rid of a lot. I have since fully restocked.

We always have a stock of rice/pasta/lentils/beans/tuna, a freezer drawer of meat, a freezer drawer of frozen veggies, and we always have plenty of garlic/onions/potatoes. I keep a loaf of sliced bread in the freezer. Rukh living in Chicago I'd make sure I had some things stocked up in winter. (Since I lived in Evanston for two years.) ETA: Per Tractor's post, we have peanut butter too! And Cup of Soup packets.

There was a recent Facebook pole asking to list the three things you have to have to survive a big storm. Here’s my list: Poptarts, Bourbon and peanut butter.
With those three items I can handle just about anything Mother Nature wants to throw at me.

I am in PA so rarely are we in for days, but I am always stocked up because the second there is a storm I become obsessed with cooking and baking things.

There is a joke here in the Baltimore area that everyone runs the stores out of bread, milk, eggs, toilet paper and beer.

Thanks! forgot we had an expert on the boards! will ask DD to pick up a lot of wet food on her jewel run. was getting low for the indoor 2 as well. the two strays we took indoors (little girl and big boy) are slowly getting used to everything/each other. No longer need to keep the door shut and they give each other a curious, and very cautious and relative long distance sniff near the butt every few days or so. Just a one way one sneaking up on the other and sniffing until the other turns and hisses, not a mutual sniff! box, water, wet and dry food out under back porch for him. I sometimes make my own cat food so had a jar of tuna and squirted the juice all over the wet food, and 4-5 temptations treats in the box. Hopefully - that will lure him and he'll see whats available. wanted to put some tuna there as I figure a cat could smell that several houses away? but can open broke. Previous snows revealed his footsteps up to our back stairs a few times, DD things he talks to little girl? I was gutted thinking about him last night, hope we can maybe lured him in before it gets worse next week.

Rukh-about the canned cat food. Serving canned cat (and dog) food to elderly pets is good for them too as they begin to have aging kidney problems. The vets will tell you to switch from dry to wet.

My sister manages a cat shelter. They put a water bottle of salt water (glued shut) in the water bowls they leave outside for feral cats. That keeps the water from freezing usually--admittedly we probably aren't as cold as you are right now.

This happens when you throw hot tea into the air. It freezes immediately. It doesn't happen when you throw cold water.

I have enough food here to get by a couple of weeks, but I'm not going to get shut in that long.
I do buy toilet paper and kleenex by the case from Amazon. Those are important things in life. Same for cat food and cat litter.
If I was stuck in for any length of time, I'd run out of what I prefer to eat but there's other stuff here.
I learned about stocking up the year I lived in the mountains of Colorado and there were times I couldn't get down to a decent sized grocery story. There was a local small store that let locals call in orders and they would bring them to the house when they got their delivery. That was a lifesaver.
