There is a joke here in the Baltimore area that everyone runs the stores out of bread, milk, eggs, toilet paper and beer. That's no joke - it's plain ol' common sense! Booze is a weather event necessity!

Rukh-about the canned cat food. Serving canned cat (and dog) food to elderly pets is good for them too as they begin to have aging kidney problems. The vets will tell you to switch from dry to wet. And bad teeth.

I'm stuck. The entire city was a giant swimming pool yesterday, as it warmed up considerably after a big snowstorm. Today we had a hard freeze. Cars are immobilized, sitting in 6 inches of solid ice. I tried to move my car. Forget it. At least I have plenty of food for me and the cat.

Can't relate. My larder never gets that bare. I consider it dire circumstances way before that for groceries. It would take at least 2 weeks for me to get to your point. well then! I've been having a rather rough go of things, and this is where I'm at...... LOL I wasn't judging you. I was commenting on my commitment to food. I'd be missing meetings before I missed food.

Part of mine was growing up where we raised and processed a great deal of our food. Part because dad worked construction so it was feast and famine, so we always stocked up when we could
Then hubs was the same for 13 years, I did not work all of those years so we did the same. And we always lived where it was cold and snowed, so I stocked up. When we lived at the last place in Texas I had a pantry with food and some home canned stuff. But we didn't even have a separate deep freeze. It was about 15 minutes to the grocery stores. Here its 12 miles and 45 minutes on some windy roads and can be longer depending. They are cleared but still a lot of days I don't want to get out. So I'm back like I used to be, have a stock of everything.

I just checked. Our high is -9 Wednesday. Still not cold enough to cancel school. The windchill has to get down into -30 or -40 before they cancel school. Windchills of -25 get you a 2 hour school delay if you live rural. Nothing if you live urban.

I sent DS out to buy some salt, so I can extricate my car. There isn't any. Anywhere. The city is sold out.

I can get by without going to a store for quite a while. I found that out when we had an earthquake and were without power for hours. In the early hours after the initial event I was worried about lack of power in addition to longer term access to food and fuel. It caused me to take stock of my emergency provisions. I’m set with food, but there were some other areas I’ve since shored up a bit.
I was glad to see that I had ample food. Surprising, since I so often think I have nothing to eat in the house. What I apparently really mean is I have nothing to eat that doesn’t require some effort on my part to cook. I always have lots of beans, rice and pasta. Lots of flour and powdered milk/buttermilk and yeast for baking. Plenty of canned tuna, sardines and kippers. I do need to make sure I have emergency rations on hand for the pets though.

I sent DS out to buy some salt, so I can extricate my car. There isn't any. Anywhere. The city is sold out. You can use table salt. Correction: You can try using table salt. You probably have little to lose and much to gain by attempting to use table salt instead of rock salt.
I've bought rock salt for ice-melting purposes when rock salt, ice-cream-making salt and pickling salt were sold out. It does melt ice, but it doesn't burrow its way through ice like hot turds from a terrier torpedo through snow. It also doesn't create a nice layer of brackish water on hard surfaces that loosens the ice and lets you shovel or kick it away with ease.
If you use table salt instead of rock salt, you might land up with a layer of water or slush on top of something that it is pretty solidly frozen. A form of salt that had larger granules would probably produce a pitting effect, but sometimes table salt just makes puddles. If you reach for the table salt, use a heavy, heavy hand.
On the other hand, if you aren't going to be going anywhere soon, you don't have much to lose by dumping a canister of Morton's on the ice problem and walking away for a couple of hours or overnight. If the temps go up enough, your ice will be nicely loosened by the next morning. If temps stay frigid, at least you will not have made the problem worse which is usually what happens if you stay out in the cold too long and start getting bright ideas that involve hot water, hair dryers, or portable ceramic heaters.

I can't get sand without a car, and now DS's car is stuck. God, how I hate our winters. We may have to wait until the snow plows need to clear that side of the street. They'll tow us out and give us tickets.

Despite the fact that DS just posted a picture yesterday to his friends of our fridge because it contained just 10 cans of RediWhip, a 12 pack of Diet Pepsi, some beer and 6 dozen eggs, we'd make it quite a while. Our pantry and freezer are full. Well there, you have nothing to worry about. I would be checking my Diet Pepsi supply first.

My 22 and 20 year old sons just went back to college. They eat INSANE amounts of top quality fresh produce and proteins every.single.day. So, I’ve learned to stock up during sales and maintain a “home grocery store level” pantry. That said, the bulk of my employer’s sales occur in May and December and I often work 13 days straight during those stretches. Going to the grocery store is the VERY LAST thing I want to do after a 12 hour shift for the umpteenth day in a row or on my one day off, so our larder can get rather “bare” (well, bare as we define it). We certainly have food to eat, but maybe not the ingredients for our usual repertoire of meals. We won’t starve, but we won’t necessarily enjoy the meals. So, I get Rukh’s predicament. After a couple of hiccups when it first arrived in my area, I can now heartily endorse Amazon Prime Now. So, use it. There is no delivery charge for the 2 hour delivery windows and the tip is well worth your time doing other things.

Where son is in Watertown, NY they have 3 feet of snow and its still snowing. Just not as much as it was. He has a snow blower and our old truck with snow plow. He was using the snow to help the truck I guess. That's a lot of snow.

I'm trying to get to a good place. Had a painter the past nearly two weeks....one project done and hopefully will start enjoying the house more. Have two weekend work trips next week and three weeks from now. Will be nonstop till those are over. Hopefully down time after that and will take a day or two off. Re kitty: There were paw prints in the fresh snow, took out fresh food and water today. How can he survive 16 below zero? What will he do when I'm out of town? I hardly know this cat but I'm so worried about him.

We live on the Pacific coast, so we don't have to deal with the types of winters most of you are describing. However, we do have lots of flooding. Also, our electrical infrastructure isn't great, and the power goes out often throughout the tri-county region. Our third challenge, is that while we live in "town", the town has only two small grocery stores. The nearest regular sized grocery store is 20 miles away. If there is flooding, we can't get there.
So, while I wouldn't consider us "preppers", we could easily go a full two weeks with only having to give up fresh fruit and veggies. I also maintain a "grocery store" in our garage and full-size freezer. If we rationed, we could probably make it two months. Granted, we would be annoyed with the limited menu, but we certainly aren't going to starve.
Heat-wise, we have a wood stove and at least two and half cords of wood if the power goes out.

It’s in the mid 40’s here today, but they’re saying we’re going to have another cold front come through in a day or two.
We probably have enough food to last at least two weeks between what’s in the freezer and pantry. We maybe wouldn’t love everything, but we wouldn’t go hungry. I’m sure DH would be complaining, but he’d get over it.

update: We are still working through all the bean I started soaking at the start of the "crisis", lol. . Burritos last night, chili today. Did some experiments with chickpeas and pinto beans across the days that were really good. DD picked up plenty of tofu, but we are going to be beans for lunch and dinner for a few days before I can get to it. Before the beans go bad. Time to get myself together to tend to the stray's supplies. Maybe finish cleaning up first.

Has the nasty even hit you yet? We're looking at Tuesday through Thursday for the temps of -25 with wind chills much worse. I mostly feel awful for the deer and other wildlife.

I actually last saw him about 3-4 months ago, but DD reported seeing him in the yard recently. Why I know which kitty it is. Use to see a tuxedo around as well. She/he too is welcome.
